I'll give you an example of how media affects society.

Remember during the 90s, we had Richard Gomez, Cesar Montano, The Guwapings, Anjanette Abayari, as the decade's standards for beauty. The 90s was when the Pinoy/Pinay look reigned and people gravitated towards this aesthetic.

Enter the new millenium and the advent of Taiwanese pop stars F4, meteor garden and the eventual entry of koreanovelas, and now the preferred standards of beauty has changed from moreno/morena to chinito. Not that the morenas got uglier, mind you.

This is one of the classic examples how the media (of marketing/advertising) plays a vital role in our society. Though the milestone of ever changing ‘preferences’ especially among our young generations have always been taken advantage by many of our marketing and advertising companies.

We can differentiate between the hype and the fad among the people and its system involved. They are the consumers and the producers in the area of marketing/advertising. Those consumers who are being targeted and get excited over a certain product to the point they begin to feel they need to consume such, are called hype. The producers or the marketing companies create a system and apply it through a clever marketing strategy to which a product is advertised as the thing everyone must have can be called as fad. So they go hand in hand and that's manipulation all about.

This is how it seems to be the media succeed in manipulating us. We buy something that we do not need but just because we see it from our favorite celebrities and we think it can be as effective as the one being endorsed.

Its hard to trust media nowadays as they are being paid as well to attack certain entities (businesses, individuals, political figures).

IMHO, media today is still the same thing as it is described in the book "1984" by George Orwell.

As for manipulation, i agree. Viewers are easily manipulated by the media by what they see and hear.

I guess its up to the viewer/listener to determine for themsleves, although most Filipinos now especially the youth are losing depth of thought.

Grabe! This is soooooooooooo news worthy. It deserves everyone's attention great job local media.

I remember nung time na north Korea threatened to launch one of its Missile and start a nuclear war, the whole world was worried, CNN kept talking about it, at ang local TV patrol natin? Right tama yan.

The media can basically decide who the heroes and the villains are. Its so powerful, even the worst douchebags can be darling to the masses. Madaming beses na natin ito nakita. Ang galing talaga pag kakampi mo media. Cases in point

Kris Aquino Vs. Joey Marquez. ABS-CBN went as far as soliciting inspirational messages to all their kapamilya stars.

Vhong Navarro. Anybody with a little bit of common sense should know na malayo si Vhong sa maamong kordero na gusto ipalabas ng kapamilya network.

there must be a law prohibiting media from accepting bribes.

andaming AC/DC sa media dito

:D :D :D If the price is right, why not. Most especially if the temptation to accept the lucrative offer is high.

remember media is a mirror because it's a commercial enterprise, money drives media, and money comes from the number of viewers/readers etc.

in essence media only shows what the public wants to see. shows are stupid because the public wants stupid.

The way I see it, the media is so powerful, if it wanted to they can elevate the taste of the public. The public does not have any power nor resources to popularize a fad or a craze. I remember in my teens we had better quality of programming. We had intelligent sitcoms. English sitcoms were being aired and appreciated. In the last decade we imported foreign quiz shows like the weakest link and who wants to be a millionaire which the general public enjoyed.

This recent years however, the game keeps changing. Its all about winning the war for ratings and raking in more advertisers and sponsors. Ruse the masses to buy or spend for bullsh!t they don't need. Convince them that sending a text vote for a PBB housemate is an act of patriotism. Sell them false hopes of becoming instant millionaires. Who cares if we keep declining as an intelligent society. The masses are always more useful desperate and ignorant.

Can anyone take its usefulness or advantages naman so we can come up with a 'pros and cons' discussion?

1. Batibot, Pinpin, Awit titik Bilang at iba pa - our local sesame street. Promoted a lot of positive Filipino values sa mga bata

3. Abangan ang Susonod na kabanata- Very clever satire and commentary about pinoy lifestyle. Kahit patawa, madaming insights naman ang napupulot. There was always one character there from class A to E who was relatable.

To be fair meron naman tayo nyan noon.

5. Mga noontime shows na tagisan talaga ng talent at katuwaan lang ang papremyo hindi yung tulad ngayon na selling false hopes of becoming instant milyonaryos

6. Talk Shows na kapupulutan ng kaalaman
