Beverly Hills Ninja 2:

A sequel to Sony Pictures 1997 action comedy "Beverly Hills Ninja" will get underway in South Korea starting next month. Mitch Klebanoff, a writer and co-producer of the original film, has scripted and will helm the sequel. Story involves an orphaned boy who wants to be a ninja but becomes involved in a crime in Hollywood while looking for his real parents. David Hasselhoff, Lucas Grabeel ("High School Musical") and Taiwanese model-turned-actress Lin Chiling ("Red Cliff") are set to star in the $7 million sequel for ATM Motionwide.

 

 

 

Airman:

Gil Kenan ("Monster House," "City of Ember") and Robert Zemeckis are teaming again for a film adaptation of Eoin Colfer's adventure book "Airman". The swashbuckling scientific story centers on Conor Broekhart, a young man born in a hot air balloon to a family close to the king who has a penchant for looking to the skies for inspiration. After his tutor and king are murdered, Broekhart spends two years in prison, escapes and must decide whether to should turn his back on those who abandoned him or fight those who plot to overthrow the government. Kenan will direct the adaptation, which will be done using performance capture technology.

 

 

 

The Eighth Wonder:

20th Century Fox has picked up "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" scribe Simon Kinberg's action-adventure pitch "The Eighth Wonder". The story centers on an archeological discovery that sets off a globe-spanning race. The aim is to be a grittier and more character-driven version of the Indiana Jones movies. Nicole Kidman is attached to star and produce the project which will be penned this Fall. Kinberg and Kidman were previously set to work together on 'Smith' and then later an untitled spy thriller but both chances never came to fruition.

 

 

 

A Jealous Ghost:

Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego will direct Paramount Vantage's literary horror thriller "A Jealous Ghost". Kirsten Dunst stars in and produce the adaptation of A.N. Wilson's 2005 novel about a young American woman who travels to London to write a dissertation on Henry James' classic ghost tale "The Turn of the Screw." She soon finds that her own circumstances begin to reflect the strange happenings of the story. Megan Holley will adapt the script.

 

 

 

Sorority Row (remake):

Carrie Fisher is in negotiations and "Samurai Girl" star Jamie Chung are set to join the cast of Summit Entertainment's "Sorority Row". A remake of the 1983 horror movie "The House on Sorority Row", the plot sees a group of sorority sisters try to cover up the death of their house-sister after a prank gone wrong, only to be stalked and killed by a serial killer. Fisher would play the sorority's house mother. Chung plays one of the sisters who dies a sadistic death. The pair join the already announced Audrina Patridge, Rumer Willis, Julian Morris, Leah Pipes, Margo Harshman and Briana Evigan.

An English couple and a photographer head off for their holidays to La Isla Verde, a remote Mexican island, in the hope that Paul can finish the children's book that he's writing. On arrival, they're perturbed to discover that they are the only adults on the island. The town where they've landed is inhabited only by children, who silently stare at them with eerie smiles. What is happening on this island? The grown ups are about to discover that these youngsters are possessed by a kind of madness that makes them k*ll all adults. Sherlock Holmes:

Recently Entertainment Weekly has been pretty good on the casting rumor front so when they say Jude Law is in talks to star in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes I tend to believe them and expect an official announcement to follow soon. If cast, Jude would star alongside Robert Downey Jr. as the title character in a Sherlock adapted from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original tale, but it is also said that the "Sherlock Holmes" comicbook played a part in the creation of the new story. Also starring in the feature is Mark Strong as the film's villain with production is scheduled to begin in October. At one point Russell Crowe was rumored to play Watson.

 

 

 

The Green Hornet:

In a press release sent out today Columbia Pictures announced Stephen Chow (Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle) will direct and star in The Green Hornet. Chow will star as Kato, opposite Seth Rogen who co-wrote the film with Evan Goldberg. The film is set for release on June 25, 2010.

 

 

 

Couples Retreat:

Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau will star in Couples Retreat for Universal Pictures. The story, based on an idea by Vaughn, follows four couples who go to a tropical island resort. While one couple is there to work on their marriage, the others are there to play but soon discover that participation in the resort's couples therapy is not optional. Jason Bateman and Faizon Love also star. Peter Billingsly will direct from a script by Favreau with production currently scheduled to start in October in Bora Bora and Los Angeles.

 

 

 

Middle Men:

Luke Wilson and Giovanni Ribisi will star in Middle Men which will chronicle of the birth of the online porn industry. The indie drama centers on a straight-and-narrow businessman who builds the first online billing company dealing exclusively with adult entertainment and finds himself in the middle of a whirlwind filled with starlets, conmen, Russian mobsters, federal agents and international terrorists -- all while trying to hold on to his marriage and family. Shooting starts next month in Phoenix. George Gallo will direct from the script he wrote with Andy Weiss.

 

 

 

A Fox's Tale:

Freddie Highmore will voice the lead character in the upcoming animated feature "A Fox's Tale". The story revolves around a young Fox named Little Jack who enjoys a blissful life in the woods until his father is captured and forced to work in a circus. Little Jack teams up with a young boy, and together they devise a plan to save the father. Bill Nighy, Miranda Richardson, and Sienna Miller also star. Mike Moran will be composing all-new songs for the film which George Gat will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Peter Doka.

 

 

 

Dark Fields:

Neil Burger confirmed that he would start shooting Dark Fields with actor Shia LaBeouf (Transformers) in New York City sometime this winter. Based on the 2002 novel "The Dark Fields" by Alan Glynn, the Universal Studios thriller is about a pill that makes you smarter and it's Burger's first film directed based on someone else's script, in this case an adaptation by Leslie Dixon, who's also writing the remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds.

 

 

 

While She Was Out:

A suburban housewife (Kim Basinger) is forced to fend for herself when she becomes stranded in a desolate forest with four murderous thugs. What starts off as a quick trip to the mall ends in the woods with a fight for her life. All she has is a toolbox and her will to survive.

Games-to-Film Update

 

Alice

American McGee's Alice, the gamemaker's twisted take on Alice in Wonderland, has been on and off for over a decade. The latest iteration had Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Sarah Michelle Gellar set to star, but as of June the whole thing seemed to be on the skids.

 

Producer Scott Faye wrote on his blog: "Alice is presently in 'turnaround' from Universal Studios. Jon and Erich Hoeber have written a very compelling feature film screenplay adaptation of the Alice game. Their screenplay will certainly serve as a jumping off point as we find a new studio home for the project. In terms of the realistic chances of seeing the Alice project being produced, all I can say is that I have invested (along with Julie Yorn and Karen Lauder, my producing partners on the project) a lot of time and effort in this project. We will get it made."

 

Director Marcus Nispel (Pathfinder) had been attached, but both he and Gellar are no longer linked. It sounds like it could still happen. It took eight years for them to make Max Payne, after all.

 

 

BioShock

Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski has been hired by Universal Pictures to helm and produce a movie version of 2k Games/Irrational Games first-person shooter BioShock.

 

The script will probably be written by John Logan (Sweeney Todd, The Aviator).

 

For the uninitiated, BioShock is a unique game that mixes a spine-chilling setting illustrated with art deco art and architecture, sci-fi themes of bio-genetic mutation and self-modification. After your plane crashes into icy uncharted waters, the player discovers a rusted bathysphere and descend into Rapture, a city hidden beneath the sea. Constructed as an idealistic society for a hand picked group of scientists, artists and industrialists, the idealism is no more. Now the city is littered with corpses, wildly powerful guardians roam the corridors as little girls loot the dead, and genetically mutated citizens ambush you at every turn.

 

 

Castlevania

Last we heard, director Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard) had been hired by Rogue Pictures and Crystal Sky Entertainment to direct their movie version of the classic Konami vampire videogame Castlevania. White, who is also attached to the film adaptation of Frank Miller's Ronin, took over from Paul W.S. Anderson who had planned to direct, but opted to make Death Race instead. The studios have also brought in Death Sentence scribe Ian Jeffers to do a rewrite of the film.

 

The Castlevania movie had been set for a 2008 release, but it hit a few bumps in the road. It's been a year since we've had confirmation that this project is still in development. It could be a great one, so we'll keep tracking it and have more for you soon.

 

 

Clock Tower

Hairspray hottie Brittany Snow is set to star in this Senator Entertainment adaptation of the best-selling Capcom videogame franchise.

 

The story centers on a young woman gets a disturbing phone call from her estranged mother warning her not to come home. When she investigates, she uncovers a terrible supernatural truth from her past.

 

Martin Weisz, director of The Hills Have Eyes II, is helming the project, which is set for a November production start in Los Angeles.

 

 

Duke Nukem

Max Payne producer Scott Faye is planning to bring another videogame maverick to the big screen, Duke Nukem.

 

Faye is collaborating with publisher 3D Relms' Scott Miller on the project. He says, "I'm working diligently at making a Duke Nukem movie scenario that will live up to the character and its import in the videogame world... as is the case with all of my game adaptations, I'd rather not make the movie than make a poor adaptation."

 

The gun-toting, bleach-blonde antihero has been causing carnage on a variety of gaming platforms since his 2-D, PC debut back in 1991, with two next-gen console offerings in now the making, as well as the long-delayed PC update Duke Nukem 4Ever.

 

 

Far Cry

Perennial videogame movie director Uwe Boll stikes again! The Far Cry flick is actually finished, but as far as we know it's still look for a distributor.

 

Til Schweiger (King Arthur) stars in the role of the charismatic ex-elite soldier Jack Carver, Emmanuelle Vaugier (Blonde & Blonder, CSI:NY) will play reporter Valerie Cardinal and Craig Fairbrass (The Bank Job) has been cast as Parker.

 

Udo Kier (Grindhouse, Blade, BloodRayne) will reign as the evil and arrogant Dr. Krieger, the obsessive madman behind many mysteries and deadly secrets of the Krieger Corporation and its creature. Natalia Avelon, Ralf Moeller, Michael Pare (Eddie and the Cruisers), Michael Eklund, Don Davis, Jay Brazeau and Chris Coppola (Postal) round out the cast.

 

 

Gears of War

Live Free or Die Hard director Len Wiseman is set to direct the Gears of War movie, based on the popular Epic Games title.

 

Screenwriter Chris Morgan has been drafted to pen the script for New Line -- his previous credits include Wanted and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

 

Epic Games exec Mark Rein told Variety in June, "It's like with our games, you can have it right or have it right now. We want to get it right. There's no timetable for us. We just want to make as good a movie as we can, and we think [Wiseman's] the guy who will do it."

 

Gears of War is tentatively set for a 2010 release.

 

 

God of War

A movie version of the PlayStation hit God of War appears to be solidly in development at Universal.

 

There's been no official announcement on this, but director Brett Ratner (X3, Rush Hour) is rumored to be directing the movie

 

God of War is a bloody story of vengeance, set in an ancient Greece full of mythical beings and deities. The hero of the story is a Spartan warrior named Kratos, who must carry out missions for the gods on Olympus to prevent Ares from destroying the city of Athens.

 

Screenwriter David Self is writing the script for the adaptation. His previous credits include Road to Perdition, Thirteen Days, The Haunting, and the upcoming Wolf Man movie.

 

 

Kane & Lynch

Kane & Lynch is on the fast track at Lionsgate where they've got Die Hard star Bruce Willis set to play mercenary "Kane" Marcus.

 

Veteran stunt coordinator and 2nd unit director Simon Crane will make his feature directing debut on the Kyle Ward-scripted action flick based on the popular Eidos Interactive videogame.

 

The story tells the violent and chaotic journey of two men -- a flawed mercenary and a medicated psychopath. The story will parallel that of the game, which follows the pair as they encounter one another while en route to death row, and together they decide to embark on a quest for revenge against Kane's former employers, one of those mysterious and covert organization types.

 

Lynch has yet to be cast, but Billy Bob Thornton's name has been kicked around.

 

 

Max Payne

Max Payne, adapted from the 3DRealms game, hits theaters on October 17 courtesy of 20th Century Fox.

 

The story stars Mark Wahlberg as maverick cop hell-bent on revenge against those responsible for the brutal murder of his family and partner. His obsessive investigation takes him on a nightmarish journey into a dark underworld. As the mystery deepens, Max is forced to battle enemies beyond the natural world and face an unthinkable betrayal

 

John Moore, whose most recent projects include WWII drama Behind Enemy Lines, horror remake The Omen and airborne adventure Flight of the Phoenix, directed.

 

The movie also stars Mila Kunis, Beau Bridges, and Chris Bridges.

 

 

Metal Gear Solid

Kurt Wimmer, the filmmaker behind sci-fi actioners Equilibrium and Ultraviolet, is the latest name to be associated with the writing and directing gig on the game-to-film adaptation of Metal Gear Solid.

 

What exactly would the movie be about? It's unclear, but for his part, game creator Hideo Kojima has hinted that it might be different from any game storyline. "Things one can express in a game are different of those in a movie," he said in a 2004 interview with Variety. "It would have to be a very different script, almost a different story."

 

What we do know is that writer-actor David Hayter, who has provided the voice for Solid Snake, the game's protagonist for years, will likely not be involved in the movie version. Hayter had pitched his take on the project to Konami, but they passed.

 

 

Prince of Persia

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire helmer Mike Newell is directing the live-action adaptation of Prince of Persia, starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

 

Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince in sixth century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Gemma Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

 

Ben Kingsley plays the evil Nizam, who plots to k*ll his brother King Shahrman, blame it Dastan, and then nab the Persian throne for himself.

 

The script was penned by Doug Miro & Carlo Bernard, Boaz Yakin, and the game's creator, Jordan Mechner.

 

Prince of Persia had been set for release next year, but it's been bumped by Disney to 2010.

 

 

Spore

A film based on EA's popular sim could be coming to the big screen.

 

"With Spore, we're looking way outside the game space, such as TV, movies, etc. We're basically planting the seeds to spread Spore out to a much wider group of people than would ever play a computer game," creator Will Wright told Reuters in an interview in August.

 

Spore begins in the primordial ooze, as players create a character from DNA that will grow, survive, and mate as it evolves from a single-celled organism to a fully-formed member of an establishing species. As more and more creatures inhabit the world, and as evolution forms the future, your species will join herds, clans, even civilizations. The more advanced the creatures of the planet grow, the more complex the strife of survival becomes.

 

It's a hugely customizable gaming experience that would certainly be a challenge to bring to the big screen.

 

 

Spy-Hunter

Spy-Hunter has been in development for some time now, but things on the project based on Midway's hit game appear to have slowed to a crawl.

 

The latest is that Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson has been tapped to write and direct the movie for Universal. Anderson joined the project last summer and at the time he told industry insider mag Variety that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is not currently set to play the title role, as had been the case when the project was first setup.

 

The movie follows a fighter pilot turned intelligence agent who does battle with a nefarious terrorist organization from behind the wheel of his fully armed G-6155 Interceptor vehicle. From inside the car, which has morphing capabilities that allow it to change from a car into a motorcycle, jet ski and submarine, he hunts the dangerous spies and assassins of Nostra, who engage him in their own sophisticated vehicles.

 

 

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li

20th Century Fox will release the new Street Fighter movie, about female fighter Chun Li, played by Kirsten Kreuk, in February.

 

Kreuk stars along with, Neil McDonagh (M. Bison), Chris Klein (Nash), Michael Clark Duncan (Balrog) and Robin Shou (Gen). Actress Moon Bloodgood stars as a new character, Detective Maya Sunee.

 

So, what's up with the flick focusing on Chun Li and clearly not including some of the videogame's most popular characters? Screenwriter Justin Marks wrote on the movie's blog, ""Think of the X-Men franchise," he wrote. "Think of the way it started with a simple story of Wolverine trying to find a place in the world. And then it spawned an entire universe of amazing characters. If we didn't keep this movie grounded, we would risk turning Street Fighter into a parody of itself. And to those of us who are fans of fighting franchises, the last thing we want is a movie that doesn't take itself seriously"

 

Romeo Must Die helmer Andrzej Bartowiak is directing.

 

 

Tekken

Tekken, based on the long running and highly successful Namco video game franchise of the same name, is written by Alan McElroy (Spawn, The Marine) and directed by Dwight Little (Anacondas, Murder at 1600). The flick's fight choreography is handled by Dion Lam (Spider-Man 2, Doom, Red Cliff).

 

Set in 2039, the film tells what happens as the greatest fighters from around the world come to compete in the last and greatest sporting event of all time, the Fist Tournament. After World Wars destroy much of civilization as we know it, the remaining territories are no longer run by governments, but by corporations the mightiest of which is Tekken. In order to keep the masses down, Tekken sponsors the Iron Fist Tournament in which fighters compete to the death for ultimate glory and receive a lifetime of stardom and wealth.

 

The story follows Jin Kazama, a street fighter that enters the tournament in order to avenge the death of his mother that he blames upon Tekken's powerful and controlling Chairman, Heihachi Mishima. He knows that the only way to get close enough to Mishima to k*ll him is to win the tournament. With the help of Lucas, an ageing Iron Fist Champion and fight trainer, Jin makes his way through the tournament, but in doing so, he begins to uncover his own past and inner demons as well as exposing a dark underbelly to Tekken that threatens the very existence of humanity.

Astro Boy:

Summit Entertainment will release Astro Boy in North America on Friday, October 23, 2009, it was announced today by Rob Friedman, Co-Chairman and CEO of Summit Entertainment, and Erin Corbett, President of Imagi Studios U.S. Summit and Imagi are putting together the final details on a marketing plan designed to reach both the family movie-going audience and adult fans of Astro Boy alike. Plan includes a commitment from a major fast food restaurant partner as well as alliances in the areas of toys, games, books and others, soon to be announced.

 

Astro Boy's all-star cast features the voices of Academy Award®-winning actor Nicolas Cage, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy and Eugene Levy with Freddie Highmore in the title role. David Bowers (Flushed Away) is directing Astro Boy from a screenplay written by Timothy Harris (Trading Places, Kindergarten Cop), with Maryann Garger producing.

 

The iconic character Astro Boy has found global popularity since his creation in the early 1950s by Japan's Osamu Tezuka, known as the "god of manga" and "father of anime", and has been the hero of three acclaimed animated television series aired around the world.

 

Set in the future, Imagi Studio's Astro Boy is a classic superhero origin story about a young robot with incredible powers, created by a brilliant scientist, and his adventure-filled journey in search of his identity and destiny, taking him into a netherworld of robot gladiators before he returns to save Metro City.

 

 

 

The Masque of Black Death:

Harbor Light Entertainment and Lotus, who announced plans for a "Rashomon" remake", are also planning to turn the unproduced Akira Kurosawa 1977 script "The Masque of Black Death" into an animated feature. Set in Russia in the early 20th century, "The Masque of Black Death" depicts a disease that kills most of the population. Kurosawa planned to have Japanese anime auteur Osamu Tezuka make the pic, but the project never got off the ground before Kurosawa's death in 1998. The film will hit theaters in 2010 as part of a 100th anniversary celebration of Kurosawa's birth.

 

 

 

The Beautiful and the Damned:

Keira Knightley is in negotiations to star in The Beautiful and the Damned. The story revolves around Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald (Knightley) who, along with F. Scott Fitzgerald, became Jazz Age icons known for living large, soaring high and crashing hard. They were toasts of the town in the 1920s, but their courtship and marriage were filled with jealousy and acrimony. Fitzgerald used their relationship as material for his novels, as did Sayre, who tried to find an artistic identity of her own and ended up being admitted to a sanitarium. Nick Cassavetes will direct from a screenplay by Hanna Weg.

 

 

 

Moby Dick:

Timur Bekmambetov will direct a reimagining of Herman Melville's Moby Dick for Universal Pictures. Adam Cooper and Bill Collage will write the screenplay "graphic novel-style" and will change the structure of the story, doing away with the first-person narration by the young seaman Ishmael, who in the original text observes how Ahab's obsession with Dick overwhelms his good judgment as captain. The change will allow the writers to depict the whale's decimation of other ships prior to its encounter with Ahab, who will be shown more as a charismatic leader than a brooding obsessive.

 

 

 

Blackbeard:

Dreamworks film about Edward Teach, aka the pirate Blackbeard, is still moving forward with Paul Greengrass possibly at the helm. According to a source, Greengrass leads the short list of candidates to direct the project penned by David Franzoni ("Amistad," "Gladiator") which would incorporate a more serious R-rated take into the world of piracy than the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films or Disney's family classic "Blackbeard's Ghost". Producer Barry Josephson is still backing Franzoni's take on the subject despite some reservation since it's announcement.

 

 

 

Fermat's Room:

Four mathematicians who do not know each other are invited by a mysterious host on the pretext of resolving a great enigma. The room in which they find themselves turns out to be a shrinking room that will crush them if they do not discover in time what connects them all and why someone might wish to murder them.

 

 

 

Season of the Witch:

Nicolas Cage will reteam with director Dominic Sena for the supernatural thriller Season of the Witch for Relativity Media. The story revolves around a group of knights in 14th century France who must transport a woman accused of witchcraft to a mountain abbey, where the monks will seek to understand and destroy her powers, believed to be the source of the Black Plague. Bragi Schut Jr. penned the screenplay.

 

 

 

I Sell the Dead:

Body Snatchers Arthur Blake and Willie Grimes have pillaged their last grave. With just five hours before Arthur follows Willie to the chopping block, he recounts his life story to Fr Francis Duffy. It soon becomes clear that Blake and Grimes were no ordinary grave robbers. And through his stories the priest learns that not all corpses are equal.

 

 

 

Humanimal:

The clumsy Turtle is a victim of the smart Fox. When Cat appears, they compete to seduce her. Cat is only interested in the one that incorporates human habits. Turtle realizes he can gain some advantage by feeding a strange creature with animal meat.

Johnny Depp movie updates:

As was previously rumored, Disney announced today at a press event in Los Angeles that Johnny Depp has signed on to play the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's ALICE IN WONDERLAND. The film will be shot using performance capture technology (most similar to BEOWULF) and will be presented in 3-D. Depp joins Mia Wasikowska who plays the title character while Matt Lucas will play the dual roles of Tweedledum and Tweedledee.

 

It was also teased that Depp will has been cast as The Lone Ranger in the upcoming movie to be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Report is also saying that Depp has signed on to play Tonto in THE LONE RANGER.

 

Walt Disney Studios Chairman Richard W. “Dick” Cook announced “How about another pirates movie!?” signaling that Depp was now signed for Pirates of the Caribbean 4.

 

 

 

National Treasure 3:

Reports says that producer Jerry Bruckheimer and actor Nicolas Cage on stage to talk about their favorite Disney franchise, “National Treasure.” Jerry Bruckheimer, Nicolas Cage and Disney's Dick Cook confirmed that National Treasure 3 was currently in development. Another installment of the popular history based franchise was expected but had not been officially announced. No release date was given but rumors have it out during the holiday season of 2010.

Cars 2:

Pixar is pushing the pedal to the metal on its sequel "Cars 2." The follow-up to John Lasseter's 2006 film "Cars" was originally set for release in summer 2012, but Lasseter, Pixar's chief creative officer said at a Disney presentation Wednesday, that the film has been moved up to a summer 2011 release.

 

Brad Lewis, who served as a producer on "Antz" and "Ratatouille," is directing the film, which Lasseter said takes its inspiration from cars from around the world that he saw while doing publicity tours on behalf of "Cars."

 

 

 

In the Playground:

It looks like Seth Rogen and Stephen Chow are lining up another cast member for their big screen version of The Green Hornet. In an interview, actor Michael Peña revealed that Rogen has offered him an unspecified role in Columbia Pictures' The Green Hornet. Rogen co-wrote the script with Evan Goldberg and will play the title role. Stephen Chow recently signed on to direct the film and to co-star as the Hornet's martial artist partner, Kato.

 

 

 

Tooth Fairy:

Billy Crystal will join the cast of Fox comedy "Tooth Fairy". Dwayne Johnson plays a minor league hockey player known for loosening dental work with physical play and is sentenced to serve as the real Tooth Fairy for a week. Ashley Judd, Julie Andrews, Stephen Merchant and Ryan Sheckler also star. Michael Lembeck is directing the project which begins shooting Monday in Vancouver.

 

 

 

From Paris With Love:

John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers will star in From Paris With Love for director Pierre Morel. The thriller, based on an original screenplay by Besson and Adi Hasak, follows a young embassy worker and an American secret agent who cross paths while working on a high-risk mission in Paris. The movie is currently filming in Paris.

I Am Legend (prequel):

Warner Bros. has set in motion a prequel to the Will Smith starrer "I Am Legend." The plan is for Smith to reprise his role as scientist Robert Neville, with Francis Lawrence returning to direct. Akiva Goldsman and his Weed Road banner will produce with James Lassiter, Smith’s partner in Overbrook Entertainment. The studio has set D.B. Weiss to write a script that is based on a detailed outline that was hatched over the past few months by Smith, Goldsman, Lassiter and Lawrence. The prequel will chronicle the final days of humanity in New York before a man-made virus caused a plague that left Smith’s character the lone survivor among a mutated mob in the city.

 

 

 

The Strain:

As if Guillermo del Toro weren't busy enough, the director has inked a publishing deal with HarperCollins imprint William Morrow to pen a trilogy of vampire thrillers with Chuck Hogan. First book, "The Strain," hits bookstores next summer. Story will revolve around an invasion of New York City by a vampiric virus. Series will trace the roots of the vampiric race back to its Old Testament origins. The books will be published by HarperCollins in the U.K., and a special edition will be published simultaneously by the company's Spanish-language imprint, Rayo, in the U.S.

 

 

 

Fathom:

"Transformers" actress Megan Fox is being sought to star in the feature adaptation of the late Michael Turner's comic book "Fathom" for Fox Atomic. The story centers on a young woman named Aspen who goes on a water-based adventure after discovering she's part of a race of aquatic humanoids named The Blue. Fox is currently seeking writers for the film which has been in development with James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment and seemed to have fallen apart due to scripting issues.

 

 

 

The Princess and the Frog:

At today's day-long Disney press event in Hollywood, the studio announced Oprah Winfrey will voice Eudora in the animated feature film The Princess and the Frog. Her role finds her playing the mother of the princess.

 

A musical set in the greatest city of them all, New Orleans, The Princess and the Frog marks Disney's return to the timeless art form of traditional animation. The film teams Ron Clements and John Musker, creators of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, with Oscar-winning composer Randy Newman to tell the most beautiful love story ever told...with frogs, voodoo, and a singing alligator.

According to rumors, Armie Hammer, an unknown actor handpicked by Mad Max and Happy Feet director George Miller will play Bruce Wayne and his Caped Crusader alter ego in the upcoming superhero-filled Justice League Mortal.

 

 

 

The Lone Ranger:

Following the reveal that Johnny Depp would play Tonto (THE LONE RANGER's faithful Native American cohort), it was natural to ask who might portray the titular masked rider against injustice in the Old West. Word as of now is that George Clooney has shown a lot of interest in the role of the Lone Ranger, and the studio's been talking to him about it. Previously it was rumored that Nic Cage was up for the role, but that rumor died a long time ago. Clooney's name has come up quite a number of times since.

Marvel Films:

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios today announced an agreement under which Paramount will distribute Marvel's next five self-produced feature films on a worldwide basis. The highly anticipated live action releases include "Iron Man 2" (May 7, 2010), "Thor" (July 16, 2010), "The First Avenger: Captain America" (May 6, 2011), and "The Avengers" (July 15, 2011). The distribution agreement also includes "Iron Man 3."

 

 

 

Thor:

Kenneth Branagh is negotiating to direct "Thor," the next Marvel Comics property that will be turned into a live-action film by Marvel Studios. Pic will be released in 2010. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige's choice of Branagh is surprising, as Branagh hasn't really directed an action-heavy film since his debut on "Henry V," a bloody telling of the British king's conquest of France. Branagh is the latest in a string of directors -- such as Jon Favreau ("Iron Man"), Christopher Nolan (the Batman franchise) and Gavin Hood ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine") -- with arthouse roots taking on big-budget comicbook fare. Marvel will set a distributor for "Thor" shortly. "Thor" comicbook adaptation, penned by Mark Protosevich, follows disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.

 

 

 

Alice in Wonderland:

Matt Lucas is about to take on two big characters all by himself. According to BBC's Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, Matt Lucas revealed on the program that he has been cast in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, playing both Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum. Lucas will portray both characters, twin brothers who never contradict each other, in the modern adaptation of Lewis Carrol's story. Alice in Wonderland is currently in pre-production and slated for a March 5, 2010 release, stars Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska and directed by Tim Burton.

 

 

 

War Heroes:

"Wanted" creator Mark Millar's six issue comic mini-series "War Heroes" has been picked up by Sony Pictures and producer Michael DeLuca to adaptr. The comic book revolves around an experimental military program that grants ordinary soldiers superpowers. A small group of these superpowered soldiers break away from the government to form a criminal enterprise, and a hero rises from their ranks to prevent a catastrophe from happening.

 

 

 

The Boys Are Back:

Miramax Films has acquired North American and Western European rights (excluding Spain) to Scott Hicks' drama "The Boys Are Back," starring Clive Owen. In Allan Cubitt's adaptation of Simon Carr's seriocomic novel "The Boys Are Back in Town," Owen plays a widower struggling to raise his two sons. Laura Fraser and Emma Booth also star. Greg Brenman ("Billy Elliot") and Tim White ("Out of the Blue") are producing the film, which begins principal photography today in Australia.

 

 

 

After.Life:

Christina Ricci (Cursed, The Addam's Family, Sleep Hollow) has signed on to star in Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo's After.Life, which was announced back in January of 2007. No word yet on if Kate Bosworth and Alfred Molina are still cast as it has been an entire year since they were announced. The story chronicles a young woman in a transitional state between life and death who fights to avoid being buried alive and the funeral director who holds her fate in his hands. Shooting begins November 10th in New York City.

 

 

 

The Uninvited:

The remake of the Korean horror film A TALE OF TWO SISTERS. "The Uninvited" revolves around Anna (Emily Browning), who returns home after spending time in the hospital following the tragic death of her mother. Her recovery suffers a setback when she discovers her father (David Strathairn) has become engaged to her mother's former nurse, Rachel (Elizabeth Banks).

 

That night, Anna is visited by her mother's ghost, who warns her of Rachel's intentions. Together, Anna and her sister (Arielle Kebbel) try to convince their father that his current fiancee is not who she pretends to be, and what should have been a happy family reunion becomes a lethal battle of wills between stepdaughters and stepmother.

God of War:

The highly anticipated feature film adaptation of the blockbuster PlayStation title God of War has indeed found its director. Officially confirming months of rumors, X-Men: The Last Stand director Brett Ratner informed UGO that he is involved with the God of War movie and is awaiting a screenplay for it before the project can be green-lit by the studio.

 

God of War is a bloody story of vengeance, set in an ancient Greece full of mythical beings and deities. The hero of the story is a Spartan warrior named Kratos, who must carry out missions for the gods on Olympus to prevent Ares from destroying the city of Athens.

 

 

 

Spider-Man 4:

Now that director Sam Raimi and series star Tobey Maguire have signed on for Spider-Man 4 and 5, fans have wondered whether Kirsten Dunst will also return for the sequels.

 

MTV recently interviewed Dunst and asked the actress whether she would reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson now that her director and co-star have agreed to return. Here's what they report she had to say about the matter:

 

"'I'm in,' said the actress matter of factly. However, when pressed to make the announcement official, Dunst quickly changed her tone, and rather cryptically added, 'I'm not saying anything, I know there's rumors…'"

 

 

 

The Partner:

Ann Peacock ("Nights in Rodanthe," "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl") will adapt John Grisham's eighth legal thriller novel, 1997's "The Partner", for Chartoff Productions and Velocity Management. The story centers on a disillusioned lawyer who steals $90 million from his law firm, stages his own death and successfully disappears for several years. What at first seems to be a brilliant white-collar crime is further complicated by a murder charge. Bob Chartoff, Lynn Hendee, Grant Turck and Mark Bethea will produce.

 

 

 

Fame (remake):

Thomas Dekker is in talks to take a lead role in MGM's Fame. In the movie, Dekker would play Marco, a working-class kid with some gnarly acting chops who is competing with thousands of hopefuls to get into and survive an elite New York public high school for the arts. Allison Burnett wrote and Kevin Tancharoen will direct the remake of the 1980 musical. Alan Parker directed the original.

 

 

 

 

Prodigy:

Danielle Panabaker ("Mr. Brooks," TV's "Shark") has been cast as the female lead in Chuck Russell's sci-fi action thriller "Prodigy" for Intrepid Pictures and Kincine. "Prodigy" centers on an elite prep school that promises to turn teenagers into geniuses through a drug-and-diet regimen for a half-million-dollar tuition. When several alumni turn up dead, the school's valedictorian is assigned to investigate the murders, leading him to a rebellious student (Max Theriot). Panabaker plays the brilliant daughter of a senator who begins to question the powers that be. Dave Kalstein adapted the screenplay from his 2006 novel.

 

 

 

The Alphabet Killer:

When police investigator Megan Paige (Eliza Dushku) becomes obsessed with the brutal murder of a young girl named Carla Castillo in the town of Churchville, her failure to catch the killer leads to a nervous breakdown. Two years later she emerges as a shadow of her former self. When the killer strikes Wendy Walsh from Webster, Megan is back on the case, determined to bring the culprit to justice.

 

 

 

House:

Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore

Chris O'Donnell and Jack McBrayer are the live-action stars of Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow's "Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore," which is being directed by Brad Peyton. Andrew Lazar is producing the CGI-blended movie via his Mad Chance banner along with former Warner Independent head Polly Cohen. The movie continues the story of the battle between cats and dogs for control of Earth. Ron Friedman and Steve Bencich -- who have made family movies and talking animals their bag with "Brother Bear," "Chicken Little" and "Open Season" -- wrote the script.

 

 

 

Red Tails:

Anthony Hemingway will direct Red Tails based on a story by George Lucas. The WWII action adventure revolves around the young pilots who overcame institutional racism in the military to form the Tuskegee Airmen, the fliers who become the first African-American fighter pilots in U.S. military history. Their planes featured the red-painted tails that give the film its title. Lucas will serve as executive producer on the project. John Ridley will write the script. Production starts next March.

 

 

 

Angel Heart (remake):

Michael De Luca, Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta are developing a remake of the 1987 Mickey Rourke supernatural thriller "Angel Heart". The trio optioned the rights to the film from a private U.K. firm as well as the book rights to William Hjortsberg's novel "Falling Angel" from which it was adapted. The novel follows the exploits of Harry Angel, a New York detective hired by a mysterious client to track down a once-popular performer indebted to him. While pursuing this seemingly routine investigation, Harry encounters dark and supernatural forces. Alan Parker helmed the original which starred Mickey Rourke, Lisa Bonet, and a memorable turn by Robert De Niro as the client who turned out to be The Devil himself.

 

 

 

Wrong Turn 3:

Fonda and her friends go to the woods for a couple of days. Her friends are killed by the wild, now staple mutant killer, Three Finger, who of course cannibalizes them. She is left to fend for herself, but not for long. Meanwhile some dangerous prisoners are being transferred by Nate Wilson, a prison warden, on his last day before leaving to become a lawyer. During transport their truck is attacked by Three Finger and the prisoners escape.

300 sequel:

Zack Snyder says he's spoken with Frank Miller who will be writing and drawing the graphic novel that the second film will be based on. Upon Miller's completion of the book, then, and only then, will they delve into writing a script for the movie.

 

Snyder continued and said he would not have any input into the novel and wants it to be a creation of Miller's 100%.

 

Snyder also said it will take place between the Battle of Thermopylae and the Battle of Plataea, the battle that narrator Dilios is at while re-telling the story of King Leonidas and the mighty Spartans to a new group of warriors at the end of 300.

 

As Dilios says, there's a whole year between Thermopylae and where he currently stands, in his final monologue he states,

 

“And so my king died, and my brothers died, barely a year ago. Long I pondered my king's cryptic talk of victory. Time has proven him wise, for from free Greek to free Greek, the word was spread that bold Leonidas and his three hundred, so far from home, laid down their lives. Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro will reunite to make I Heard You Paint Houses for Paramount Pictures. In the movie, De Niro will play Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran, who is reputed to have carried out more than 25 mob murders -- possibly including the murder of Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa. Steve Zaillian will adapt the story from the book by Charles Brandt. Shortly before Sheeran died in 2003, he confessed to Brandt the killing and dismemberment of Hoffa, carried out on orders from mob boss Russell Bufalino. The title refers to mob slang for contract killings, and the resulting blood splatter on walls and floor

 

 

 

Battle: Los Angeles:

Jonathan Liebesman is in negotiations to direct "Battle: Los Angeles," a sci-fi actioner Neal Moritz and his Original Films are producing for Columbia. The story follows one Marine platoon's encounter in the battle against an alien invasion on the streets of Los Angeles. The studio picked up the spec by Chris Bertolini pre-emptively in April, and Moritz was bullish on making it as soon as possible.

 

 

 

Yogi Bear (live action):

Yogi Bear and his sidekick Boo-Boo are headed for the Warner Bros. lot in a new feature film! The film will be a mix of live action and CG with Yogi and his buddy being the latter. Surf's Up" co-helmer/co-writer Ash Brannon is attached to direct. Endeavor-repped Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia, who exec produced "That '70s Show" and are writing the feature "Tooth Fairy" for Fox, are penning the screenplay. Donald De Line is producing via his De Line Pictures; Karen Rosenfelt is also producing, with Jon Berg overseeing for Warners. The project, culled from Warners' vast library, is planned as a live-action/animated hybrid along the lines of Fox's 2007 hit "Alvin & the Chipmunks." Much of the movie will be live-action, but Yogi Bear and sidekick Boo Boo will be done in CG.

Zack Snyder says he's spoken with Frank Miller who will be writing and drawing the graphic novel that the second film will be based on. Upon Miller's completion of the book, then, and only then, will they delve into writing a script for the movie.

 

Snyder continued and said he would not have any input into the novel and wants it to be a creation of Miller's 100%.

 

Snyder also said it will take place between the Battle of Thermopylae and the Battle of Plataea, the battle that narrator Dilios is at while re-telling the story of King Leonidas and the mighty Spartans to a new group of warriors at the end of 300.

 

As Dilios says, there's a whole year between Thermopylae and where he currently stands, in his final monologue he states,

Kevin Spacey will once again transform into Superman’s arch-foe, Lex Luthor, in the next Superman film, tentatively titled Superman: The Man of Steel. The news comes buried near the bottom of an interview with Spacey done by The Belfast Telegraph.

20th Century Fox co-chairman Tom Rothman and quizzed him about a potential Daredevil reboot. This is what the man had to say for himself:

 

“A Daredevil, to use your words, reboot, is something we are thinking very seriously about. The thing The Incredible Hulk showed although, it did what it did, is that it is possible, that if you really do it right the audience will give you a second chance. That it is possible. And I think that you see that when they did Batman Begins, the first Nolan movie, that you can have made some mistakes along the way or movies that the audience wasn't that crazy about and then given the proper amount of time and the right creative vision behind it, you can, to use your word, reboot. Would it be as dark? I don't know because what it really needs is, it needs a visionary at the level that Chris Nolan was. It needs someone, it needs a director, honestly, who has a genuine vision. Johnny Depp movie updates:

As was previously rumored, Disney announced today at a press event in Los Angeles that Johnny Depp has signed on to play the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's ALICE IN WONDERLAND. The film will be shot using performance capture technology (most similar to BEOWULF) and will be presented in 3-D. Depp joins Mia Wasikowska who plays the title character while Matt Lucas will play the dual roles of Tweedledum and Tweedledee.

 

It was also teased that Depp will has been cast as The Lone Ranger in the upcoming movie to be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Report is also saying that Depp has signed on to play Tonto in THE LONE RANGER.

 

Walt Disney Studios Chairman Richard W. “Dick” Cook announced “How about another pirates movie!?” signaling that Depp was now signed for Pirates of the Caribbean 4.

I Am Legend (prequel):

Warner Bros. has set in motion a prequel to the Will Smith starrer "I Am Legend." The plan is for Smith to reprise his role as scientist Robert Neville, with Francis Lawrence returning to direct. Akiva Goldsman and his Weed Road banner will produce with James Lassiter, Smith’s partner in Overbrook Entertainment. The studio has set D.B. Weiss to write a script that is based on a detailed outline that was hatched over the past few months by Smith, Goldsman, Lassiter and Lawrence. The prequel will chronicle the final days of humanity in New York before a man-made virus caused a plague that left Smith’s character the lone survivor among a mutated mob in the city.

God of War:

The highly anticipated feature film adaptation of the blockbuster PlayStation title God of War has indeed found its director. Officially confirming months of rumors, X-Men: The Last Stand director Brett Ratner informed UGO that he is involved with the God of War movie and is awaiting a screenplay for it before the project can be green-lit by the studio.

 

God of War is a bloody story of vengeance, set in an ancient Greece full of mythical beings and deities. The hero of the story is a Spartan warrior named Kratos, who must carry out missions for the gods on Olympus to prevent Ares from destroying the city of Athens.

 

 

Spider-Man 4:

Now that director Sam Raimi and series star Tobey Maguire have signed on for Spider-Man 4 and 5, fans have wondered whether Kirsten Dunst will also return for the sequels.

 

MTV recently interviewed Dunst and asked the actress whether she would reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson now that her director and co-star have agreed to return. Here's what they report she had to say about the matter:

 

"'I'm in,' said the actress matter of factly. However, when pressed to make the announcement official, Dunst quickly changed her tone, and rather cryptically added, 'I'm not saying anything, I know there's rumors…'"

The First Avenger: Captain America

Marvel has released an official synopsis for the story of The First Avenger: Captain America. The synopsis appeared in the latest issue of Production Weekly – which suggests that the synopsis is legitimate.

 

Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy’s earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment… Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the ‘Super-Soldier Serum’ and bombarded by ‘vita-rays.’ Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and leader of the Avengers.

Alice in Wonderland:

In a bold move Tim Burton has once again cast his main squeeze, Helena Bonham Carter, in his latest film Alice in Wonderland, but in a slightly less expected move he has also cast Anne Hathaway. The two will play the dueling Red and White Queens in the flick.

 

Carter will play the Red Queen who has deposed and banished the White Queen (Hathaway), a benevolent monarch who needs Alice to slay a creature known as the Bandersnatch. Alice is played by Mia Wasikowska while Johnny Depp also reunites with Tim Burton as the Mad Hatter. The film will use a combination of live action and performance-capture technology to tell the Lewis Carroll story. The film is rumored to be heading toward being released in 3-D on March 5, 2010.

 

 

 

Astro Boy:

Matt Lucas has joined the cast of Imagi Studios' CG-animated motion picture Astro Boy, it was announced by Erin Corbett, President of Imagi Studios U.S. Previously announced for the all-star cast were Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage, Kristen Bell, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy and Eugene Levy with Freddie Highmore in the title role.

 

Set in the future, Imagi Studio's Astro Boy is a classic superhero origin story about a young robot with incredible powers and his adventure-filled journey in search of his identity and destiny, taking him into a netherworld of robot gladiators before he returns to save Metro City.

 

Astro Boy, slated for domestic release on October 23, 2009, is being distributed worldwide by Summit Entertainment except for Imagi's reserved territories of Japan, Hong Kong and China.

 

 

 

Ramayan 3392 AD:

Mandalay Pictures will adapt Liquid Comic's action-adventure graphic novel "Ramayan 3392 AD" for the big screen says the trades. Scribe John Collee ("Master and Commander," "Happy Feet") will adapt the story, described as a reimagining of an ancient Hindu epic. The story centers on Prince Rama, the legendary blue-skinned warrior and an incarnation of the god Vishnu, fights to save his beloved from the demon king who kidnapped her. Mark Canton and Cathy Schulman will produce. The comic is also being developed as a multiplayer online game by Sony Online Entertainment.

 

 

 

Unthinkable:

Brandon Routh, Gil Bellows and Martin Donovan have joined the cast of the suspense thriller "Unthinkable" for Senator Entertainment. Routh and Bellows play members of an FBI anti-terrorism team run by Agent Brody (Carrie-Anne Moss). With the help of a black-ops agent (Samuel L. Jackson), they're assigned by an FBI director (Donovan) to interrogate an American Muslim man (Michael Sheen) claiming to have nuclear bombs planted in three U.S. cities. The Gregor Jordan-directed film will starts filming October 20th in Los Angeles.
