Punisher: War Zone

This is the official first trailer of the third movie of the Punisher franchise, Punisher: War Zone.

Death Race

Jason Statham leads the cast of an action-thriller set in the post-industrial wasteland of tomorrow, with the world's most brutal sporting event as its backdrop. A penitentiary full of felons has inspired the jailers to create a grisly pastime ripe for lucrative kickbacks. Now, adrenalized inmates, a global audience hungry for televised violence and a spectacular arena come together to form the Death Race. Three-time speedway champion Jensen Ames (Statham) is an expert at survival in the harsh landscape that has become our country. Just as he thinks he has turned his life around, the ex-con is framed for a gruesome murder he didn't commit. Forced to don the mask of the mythical driver Frankenstein -- a crowd favorite who seems impossible to k*ll -- Ames is given an easy choice by Terminal Island's warden (Joan Allen): suit up or rot away in a cell. His face hidden by a metallic mask, one convict will be put through an insane three-day challenge. Ames must survive a gauntlet of the most vicious criminals in the country's toughest prison to claim the prize of freedom. Driving a monster car outfitted with machine guns, flamethrowers and grenade launchers, one desperate man will destroy anything in his path to win the most twisted spectator sport on Earth.

IRON MAN 2:

Although he has not yet been signed to direct the sequel, Iron Man director Jon Favreau has been blogging who fans might expect to see menace Shellhead in Iron Man 2.

In a posting at his MySpace blog, Favreau revealed that "The Mandarin is Iron Man's nemesis and will be incorporated in the sequel. It's true that I am apprehensive about how he is to be presented. In the tech based modern world that we created for (Iron Man), a Fu Manchu style villain with magical/alien tech rings would seem out of place."

Favreau added, "There were early drafts of (Iron Man) where the Mandarin was the main villain, so we've already explored the character to some extent. I am curious to see how he has been treated in his latest books and how that might influence our direction."

He also said, "I've already mentioned War Machine and Mandarin. I have some ideas, but I really need to sit down with Downey and the Marvel guys before we say much more." And when asked about the chances of Obadiah Stane returning (SPOILER ALERT) despite his apparent death at the end of the first film, Favreau quipped, "Stane's death? Do characters ever really die in Marvel? Isn't it like a soap opera?"

THE LAST MISTRESS

marks the monumental pairing of cinema's premiere provocateur, director Catherine Breillat (ROMANCE, FAT GIRL) with the most fearless and explosive actor of our generation, Asia Argento (MARIE ANTOINETTE, BOARDING GATE). A penniless rogue, Ryno de Marigny (newcomer Fu-ad Aît Aattou), shocks 19th century France with his engagement to the virginal gem of the aristocracy, Hermangarde (Roxane Mesquida of FAT GIRL). As lurid speculations of Ryno's ten year affair with the carnal Vellini (Argento) manifest, a supremely erotic and wickedly humorous depiction of human lust is revealed - overriding the brittle facade of nobility and reverence. Bolstered by Breillat's mastery of the medium and Argento's commanding performance, THE LAST MISTRESS is a highly entertaining yet incredibly provocative film that has resulted in unanimous praise from audiences and critics across the world

Marvel movies:

Iron Man director Jon Favreau, who is developing a sequel to be released in April 2010, says Marvel's plan is "to team up the heroes for The Avengers, which is made up of all of the Marvel heroes they have the rights to."

Favreau says the team's lineup has changed throughout the years, "but the ones Marvel is talking about now are Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man and Iron Man. I would love to see that."

Here's what Stan Lee, 85, who created the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man and Nick Fury characters, and Joe Simon, 94, creator of Captain America, had to say about the origins of the next wave of comic-book characters headed for the big screen.

Thor

Release date: Solo film to be released June 4, 2010

Screenwriter: Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend)

Origin: Disabled medical student Donald Blake discovers a mighty hammer that transforms him into his alter ego, the Norse warrior Thor. Lee recalls meeting years ago with Fabio, the romance-novel cover boy, about playing the part. "Someone brought him up to my office to see if he could play Thor," Lee says. "Visually, he would have been good, but in those days we weren't even in a position to do a movie." Lee says Thor "will have to be someone big and strong and kind of blondish. And there should be a nobility."

Ant-Man

Release date: Solo film, but timing not yet available

Director: Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead)

Screenwriters: Wright and Joe Cornish

Origin: Biochemist Hank Pym can alter his size as well as communicate with and control insects. Ant-Man creator Stan Lee recently had lunch with Wright to discuss the direction of the film. "There's never been a hero like this in the movies," Lee says. "I did one comic book called The Man in the Ant Hill about a guy who shrunk down and there were ants or bees chasing him. That sold so well that I thought making him into a superhero might be fun."

The First Avenger: Captain America

Release date: Solo film to be released May 6, 2011

Origin: Captain America made his debut in 1941 as lowly U.S. Army Pvt. Steve Rogers. "We had him peeling spuds," creator Joe Simon recalls. "The government shot him up with a super-serum, which made him the first of what was to be an army of superheroes." Simon and comic-book artist Jack Kirby, who died in 1994, created the character during World War II as an all-American adversary to Adolf Hitler. "We were a war-consumed nation, just like today," he says. "Hitler was a comic foil for our character, and every comic sold out that first year." Simon now suggests that Osama bin Laden might be an appropriate foe for Captain America to pursue. But Captain America more likely will take on his most famous adversary, the Red Skull — a Nazi (later turned Communist) introduced by Simon in Captain America Comics #1.

Nick Fury

Release date: Not intended as a solo film, but character will appear in The Avengers universe in summer 2011

Origin: Lee introduced the character in 1963 in the war magazine Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos. "It did very well," Lee says. "But after a couple of years, I got bored with it and wanted to k*ll it. Years later, I got a lot of fan mail asking, 'What happened to Sgt. Fury?' In those days, there was a popular show called The Man From U.N.C.L.E., so I brought Nick back as a colonel for S.H.I.E.L.D.: Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division."

War of the Gods:

Producers Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari (300) will produce War of the Gods, and have attached Tarsem Singh, much known as a music-video and commercial director, to direct. Charley and Vlas Parlapanides, the brothers who penned the script for Universal's 50 Cent vehicle Live Bet, penned the War of the Gods spec. The script concerns the battles waged by Theseus, a warrior from Greek mythology. The Ghost:

Pierce Brosnan revealed he and Nicolas Cage are set to star in THE GHOST, an upcoming political thriller directed by Roman Polanski. The film will star Brosnan as a former British Prime Minister working on his memoir with a ghostwriter (Cage). When the writer learns information about a scandal surrounding the former PM, he finds himself battling for his own safety. The film is based on the novel by Robert Harris who based the film on Tony Blair and a one-time assertion that he could be prosecuted for war crimes.

Punisher: War Zone

Waging his one-man war on the world of organized crime, ruthless vigilante-hero Frank Castle sets his sights on overeager mob boss Billy Russoti. After Russoti is left horribly disfigured by Castle, he sets out for vengeance under his new alias: Jigsaw. With the "Punisher Task Force" hot on his trail and the FBI unable to take Jigsaw in, Frank must stand up to the formidable army that Jigsaw has recruited before more of his evil deeds go unpunished.

The Hills Run Red:

The story centers on a film fanatic whose obsession with finding a complete print of an infamous slasher movie leads him and two friends into the backwoods where the film was shot. They realize too late that filming never ended -- and now they must survive a nightmarish onslaught or become part of the movie forever.

Butterfly Effect: Revelation

A young man discovers he has inherited the powers of "The Butterfly Effect" and attempts to solve the mystery of his high school girlfriend's death using his newfound ability, only to unwittingly unleash a vicious serial killer.

Blood Car:

In the near future, gas is an astronomical $40.00 a gallon, and Archie Andrews (Mike Brune) has definitely had enough. Archie, a nerdy schoolteacher, is determined to find an alternative energy source for his car. While experimenting, Archie cuts himself, and discovers that all his car needs is blood. Human blood. 300 sequel:

Legendary Pictures has confirmed rumors that it's developing a 300 follow-up for Warner Bros. with Frank Miller set for writing and Zack Snyder intended to direct. Miller is writing the graphic novel the project will be based upon, although at this point it's not clear whether it will be a prequel or spinoff. Most of the characters, including Gerard Butler's King Leonidas, died in the original, making a follow-up tricky.

Tekken:

While at the press junket for Hellboy II today in Los Angeles, Luke Goss said that he "thinks" the Tekken movie in the works will end being rated R. Like Street Fighter, Tekken is a live-action adaptation of a very popular platform fighting video game from Namco. The film is being directed by Dwight H. Little, of Rapid Fire, Free Willy 2, "Prison Break", and "Bones", and has a script penned by Alan B. McElroy, of Spawn, Wrong Turn, and The Marine.

Luke Goss stars in the film as fighter Steve Fox. Goss explained that his character is 15 years after his prime time as one of the best fighters. He says that he fights, but not actually in the ring - only out of it in the movie. Although various games have their own background stories, the plot of the film focuses on Heihachi Mishima (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa), the leader of a highly corrupt business under investigation of a murder. He announces a tournament to crown a "King Of Iron Fist" and make the winner his personal bodyguard, but as the fighters assemble, they begin to realize they are linked together through more than just their interest in killing Mishima anyway.

PEP: Cinemalaya 2008 screens 10 films, July 11-20

06/16/2008 | 06:43 PM

From July 11-20, the public will be able to see 10 full-length entries and 10 short films that will compete in the fourth edition of the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. This year's edition has the theme Anong Kwento Mo?, which conveys the message that Filipinos everywhere have interesting stories to tell, especially Filipino independent filmmakers.

Mainstream stars such as Mylene Dizon, Eugene Domingo, Tessie Tomas, TJ Trinidad, Ryan Eigenmann, Baron Geisler, Coco Martin, Ces Quesada, and Meryll Soriano take part in the full-length films of Cinemalaya 2008.

Organizers earlier announced that two of the ten chosen finalists would not be taking part in Cinemalaya 2008. Emman dela Cruz's entry titled 1434456 is about a Punjabi widower named Ranjeet Singh, also fondly called Jimmy Paybsiks. The lead character, who lives in contemporary Manila, reflects the struggles of a migrant sector in the country-our Indian neighbors.

Antiparang Basag, supposed to be directed by Edith Asuncion, backed out due to the lack of a counterpart-financing scheme. This entry narrates how a woman helped four octogenarians fulfill their simple wishes in life.

In replacement of 1434456, Emilio "Jay" Abello was able to enter the Cinemalaya competition with his entry Namets (which is the Ilonggo word for yummy). This romantic comedy is a colorful rollicking celebration of food as well as love.

Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil filled the final slot with her film titled Boses, shot in San Antonio, Zambales. A wounded violinist (played by Coke Bolipata) meets a child prodigy and helps him recover.

The other Cinemalaya entries for this year include 100 by Chris Martinez, Baby Angelo by Joel Ruiz and Abi Aquino, Brutus by Tara Illenberger, Concerto by Paul Morales, Huling Pasada by Paul Sta. Ana, Jay by Francis Pasion, My Fake American Accent by Onnah Valera and Ned Trespeces, and Ranchero by Michael Cardoz.

Synopses of full-length Cinemalaya entries:

100

According to filmmaker Chris Martinez, his official entry to Cinemalaya is a "celebration of the senses and what life has to offer." His goal was to do a film about death in a young fresh way. By doing so he believes he celebrates life. 100 chronicles the last three months of a cancer-stricken woman (played by Mylene Dizon) who has a list of things to do before she dies. Her list of tasks, mostly dealing with closure and practical matters, covers the worldly and spiritual worlds as people close to her share her last days. The film examines the betrayal of the body, celebrates the senses and contemplates the end of life and how to live it. A light-hearted, briskly paced, youthful take on a classic subject, 100 stars today's most exciting performers such as Mylene Dizon, Eugene Domingo, Tessie Tomas, TJ Trinidad, Ryan Eigenmann, Simon Ibarra, and others. Under the creative supervision of Marlon Rivera, 100 is written and directed by Chris Martinez.

Baby Angelo

TV actress Ces Quesada gives the performance of her life in Baby Angelo. Her expressively sad eyes are able to convey emotions without the need for dialogue. When an aborted baby is found in the dumpster of a small apartment complex, the lives of its tenants are turned upside down, and they are forced to confront the ghosts of their own past. Though it is the investigation of this sad event that moves the film Baby Angelo forward, the story is really about the people that inhabit this story. Their lives are linked by a common emptiness, lost opportunities; lives cut abruptly by circumstance. And when a tragedy hangs over them, they are forced to examine their own lives, a series of inconsequential miseries that add up to absolutely nothing at all.

Boses

Award-winning director Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil describes her work as a musical journey. In this movie, a wounded violinist meets a child prodigy and helps him recover. Boses is the story of a musician who gains back his humanity by giving violin lessons to a child of the slums, who in turn, is able to get back his voice from a muted, abused and desensitized existence. This is a story of a wonderful friendship founded on the sublime beauty of music between a violin teacher and his student, a mute seven-year old abused child in a shelter. Ariel (played by Coke Bolipata) discovers the immense talent of Onyok hiding behind a veil of silence and pain caused by an unhappy and cruel father. In the developing relationship of teacher and student, both characters reveal more of themselves that otherwise may have remained unspoken. They discover each other's strengths and failures by way of expressing it through the violin.

Brutus

Regarding her film, director Tara Illenberger says, "Gusto naming ipakita ang ganda ng Pilipinas, specifically Mindoro. We also want to show the need to preserve the forests."

Two Mangyan kids are hired by illegal loggers to smuggle wood from the mountains of Mindoro. Hiding the logs beneath a bamboo raft, the kids embark on a dangerous journey through whitewater and harsh terrain, risking life and limb to deliver the goods to the lowlands. They discover a world completely different from their own-run by the greed of men, a world governed by ideologies that bring about the armed conflict that plagues the Mindoro highlands, the home of their own people. She adds, "Apart from the serious subject it's also a coming of age film for the two kids. I'm also proud of the performances of Ronnie Lazaro and Yul Servo."

Concerto

Theater director Paul Morales takes on the digital medium with Concerto. He pointed out, "This is a deeply personal story about my family and how we survived during the second World War. It shows the importance of music and was able to transcend borders."

Concerto is about a special piano concert is held in the forest outside Davao City during World War II. A displaced Filipino family, lead by former Military Commander Ricardo and his wife Julia, become acquainted with a group of Japanese officers. Their son Joselito, a Japanese speaker, becomes the conduit with the neighboring Japanese. Their daughters Niña, an aspiring concert pianist and the musically gifted Maria, who is able to play by ear, are alternately repulsed and intrigued by the officers.

Family values are questioned as the family treads the thin line between enmity and friendship with the occupying Japanese. Based on true stories from the director's own family history, Concerto celebrates a family whose reverence for life, expressed through their love of music and friendship, can survive even war, and shows how beauty and compassion does grow in even the harshest of conditions. Five actors from Japan were cast as officers. Direk Paul says, "I'm blessed with a talented cast that include Jay Aquitania, Meryll Soriano, Shamaine Buencamino, and Nonoy Froilan."

Huling Pasada

The title, according to director Paul Sta. Ana, refers to the taxi driver's shift and to a writer's most previous work. The story follows the creative process of Ruby, a prolific writer, abandoned wife and protective mother. She writes about Mario, a taxi driver who becomes a father figure to a street child in the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. As Ruby tries to resolve Mario and child's story, she seeks refuge in her own creative output: the line between reality and fiction is blurred, and her character's past is entangled with her own inevitable future. Two Ateneans share the directing duties for Huling Pasada: Paul Sta. Ana and Alvin Yapan.

Jay

Young director Francis Pasion summarizes his film as follows: "Baron Geisler's role as a gay TV producer personifies my commentary on Philippine media." Jay is the name of two protagonists in the film. Jay Santiago is a gay TV producer documenting the family of a gay hate crime victim who happens to be his namesake, Jay Mercado. In the process of producing for his TV program, Jay Santiago intrudes into the private grief of the other Jay's family and he is drawn to the secret life and love of his subject. Direk Francis issues a warning for his film, "Do not believe everything you see as truth." Aside from Baron, this film also stars Coco Martin as Edward.

My Fake American Accent

Writer-director of this Cinemalaya entry Onnah Valera said, "I wanted to capture ang buhay na walang tulugan."

Set in one of the high rises of the Makati, My Fake American Accent is a look into the lives of call center personnel. It's a slice-of-life workplace comedy following the lives of several Technical Support call center agents in the span of six months. They handle calls and provide inbound tech support for the American customers of an Internet company in the United States. Speaking with a fake American accent is a prerequisite for the job. This ensemble comedy is an inside look into the maddening, sleep-deprived, caffeine-fuelled lives of those who ply their trade in the call center industry.

Namets (Yummy)

Director Jay Abello describes his film Namets as a romantic comedy. He proudly proclaims, "It is the no angst film in Cinemalaya." He praises the acting skill of lead actress Angel Jacob who picked up the Ilonggo dialect in two months. Abello is ecstatic that they shot the dialogue almost entirely in Illonggo. Renowned director Peque Gallaga was also cast as a mafia boss. Namets (Yummy) follows the ongoing flirtation between Manuel and Lourdes, two native of the Negros province whose lives revolve around food. Along the way, we are treated to the full panorama of Ilonggo cuisine and the idiosyncrasies of appreciating it. Namets is a colorful rollicking celebration of food as well as love. Jay Abello explains, "If you notice, the love of food is very much part of our culture, not just in Negros but as Filipinos in general."

Ranchero

The unpredictability of life in jail is the subject of Ranchero. Director Michael Cardoz likes characters who aren't what they seem. "Merong kontrabida na nagiging bida."

Ranchero unfolds in a small provincial jail in Rizal. It's about Ricardo whose last day in jail is today. He and his close friend Miyong work in the jail's kitchen. The two spent the whole morning talking about Ricardo's plans when he gets out of jail. After lunch, one of the kitchen knives went missing and this was brought to the attention of jail officials. Not only will this event affect food preparation in the jail's kitchen but also the lives of both of them. - Philippine Entertainment Portal
