photographer
THE END HAS COME!!!!!!!!! Sayang ang 11 point lead. The culprit? SHOOTING SHOOTING SHOOTING!!! ACCURACY OF SHOOTING!!!! Thank you Gilas for the entertainment............ON TO THE PBA! Quote Link to comment
TERRENCE34
Na silat pa.. really a heart breaker. Anyways, congrats Gilas for making it 4th. Douthit, Tiu, and coach Toroman will have to build a new stronger team. Quote Link to comment
darknight2272
sayang pero thanks sa effort at puso ng smart gilas.... Quote Link to comment
junix
this is where the journey to the olympics ends. sayang...nakakapanghinayang. gilas had korea on the ropes. the ghost of missed free throws (against korea) continues to haunt the philippines. missed free throws by racela before. now, two missed free throws by williams, one by douthit and one by lassiter - all in the dying seconds of the game. tama ang sabi ni photographer...CONSISTENCY ang dapat. we may have come short on our objective but the team gave it their best shot. the big question now is will this gilas program continue and if so, who will be the next generation of players? Richmond
For me the Smart Gilas should be re evaluated it's not every time there is an international tournament that we send a half baked team and expecting we would get positive results there is no shortcuts as they say we should have Team A and B in our national pool of players so that there would be continuity. photographer
Nagulat ako sa comment ng announcers that the Jordan team has been together for the past eight years! Wow! Nagbunga ang kanilang program! Wala kasing PBA sa Jordan Quote Link to comment
junix
it's true. we cannot just be sending ill-prepared basketball teams to international competitions. this smart-gilas team had a few years together and yet it still came out 2 wins short of its goal...almost but not quite. maybe if the core of this team will continue with the program and with the addition of new and younger players to take over asi and the other "senior citizens" we might just have a better shot next time. ang problema lang balik pba na naman tayo. crispa18
Sayang talaga pero the Philippines is slowly getting there in terms of Basketball Dominance in Asia. We can actually say that were back in the Asian Basketball Scene! Smart Gilas AlL the way! Quote Link to comment
photographer
Then there's politics sa lending ng players. One, hindi ako naniniwala sa katwiran ni Hontiveros na fatigue na ang katawan niya. I think the real reason is that Gilas' supporter and patron is Manny Pangilinan na kalaban sa negosyo ng mga Cojuangco. Nahihiya si Hontiveros or pinagsabihan na umalis na siya sa Gilas. That's what I believe is the true reason him leaving our national team. Quote Link to comment
photographer
China rules FIBA Asia tilt, books Olympic berth MANILA, Philippines – Yi Jinlian buried a free throw with 28.5 seconds left then China made the needed defensive stop as the host team nipped Jordan, 70-69, to regain the FIBA Asia crown at the Wuhan Sports Centre in China tonight. The Chinese gained outright slot in the 2012 London Olympics while the Jordanians booked a seat in the world Olympic qualifier. Smart Gilas earlier yielded to South Korea, 68-70, to finish at fourth place. Edited September 25, 2011 by photographer Quote Link to comment

rafael77
so frustrating. i can't believe we lost considering that korea played terribly. whats with our luck?! Quote Link to comment

rafael77
that was originally the plan: to send a well prepared team. kaya nag smart matched the pba salary for the players to keep them. as i said before: "what the stupid f#&k is that?!! their contract is a month short of their main goal which the olympic qualifier? and tanga naman! naman they have to start from scratch to play the qualifier a month from now? what foresight!!!" and eventually we sent a ragtag last minute composed team with pba players (all from talk and text and not necessarily the best choice). i appreciate the support of smart and manny pangilinan but to some extent nauna yung negosyo. unlike danding before, national team first. then eventually pba and negosyo when they did well already in the international games. remember the all amateur squad of ncc reinforced by only 3 fil-ams/naturalized players? sad part in gilas, the cast who were there from the beginning and are very familiar with the system nabangko in lieu of fil-ams. well, hopefully not because they are homegrown. it's true. we cannot just be sending ill-prepared basketball teams to international competitions. this smart-gilas team had a few years together and yet it still came out 2 wins short of its goal...almost but not quite. maybe if the core of this team will continue with the program and with the addition of new and younger players to take over asi and the other "senior citizens" we might just have a better shot next time. ang problema lang balik pba na naman tayo. rafael77
and i posted this too. sorry for bringing this back. "so what happens to the 3 year investment? wala na? erase? and the main goal is the olympic qualifier. how stupid.or the marketing mileage of smart is over? regardless of the result for our country. smart made money all right. and we thought its all about the country!" KillTheDEVIL, on 28 August 2011 - 12:57 AM, said:MVP, according to an article by Quinito Henson, is spending roughly 300 million for the Gilas to come into being. That's around the budget of a PBA team for 6 years. So let's continue supporting the efforts of Smart executives instead. "300M is small for an advertising budget. small portion lang yan out of the billions na advertising budget smart for a year. i would love to support smart's effort. problem is the effort pala has nothing to do with the country but for the mileage of the brand. otherwise tuloy ang contract ng mga players that they invested on, to fulfill the main goal which is the olympic qualifier next month. unless, narealize na hindi pala talaga magagaling yung nakuha nila sa national team so they opted to let them go, and look for new ones. and it took toroman 3 years to know if his players can or cannot. new coach na rin maybe?" rafael77
nevertheless, congrats to the smart giles for the 4th place finish. but as jaworski once said there's no such thing as a 2nd, third or fourth place. its either you're a champion or a loser. we're willing to wait another 4 years right? for the country!!! go pilipinas! junix
tama...kelangan laban ng laban. gilas was 2 wins short of its goal. let's continue supporting and to the sponsors/patrons, please leave politics away from sports (not only basketball). Quote Link to comment

Nagbunga ang kanilang program! Wala kasing PBA sa Jordan come to think of it, the last time the philippines played in the olympics was in 1972 (munich olympics) 3 years before the birth of the pba. after that it was all downhill for philippine basketball...well, except for a few shining moments when danding bankrolled the ncc team with ron jacobs calling the shots. just my thoughts Quote Link to comment
Mr. Mister
Like in the other countries, we should have a national team that practices as a team, day in and day out, whether there are tournaments or not. Until we do this, we cannot hope to catch up with our neighbors where this is the case.Nevertheless, congratuations to the team and thanks to Smart for providing the financial support! Richmond
The ghost of the missed free throws by Olsen Racela came back to haunt us yesterday I just can't recall when is the last time that our Philippine team beat a South Korean team may be in the Asian Games, Jones Cup or any international tournament. RED2018
Well done, Gilas! Let's be happy for the decent 4th place finish. At least we improved from the last outing, and we're moving forward... I believe they have given their best, napiga na nila ang lahat. IMHO, the team lacks 3 basic things, though: 1. Tall Mobile Centers so sad we only had Marcus and there were times that Aguilar was not used when our ceiling force was helpless. Moreover, there should be at least 3 Marcuses in that team considering the ave. height of the opponents. 2. Accurate Shooting pressures of the game are inevitable, but basic dictates that free throws and open shots should be at least 80% accurate. with the opponents' size, rebound/recovery after field goal misses are sure thing; as for missed free throws, need I say more, we've been haunted by these miscues in the past 3. Legitimate Snipers the inputs of Ranidel and Jimmy were huge boosts. But they were not enough. Toroman practically relied on them. No one expected these 2 to be fiery each day. There could have been more 3pt snipers to the mold of Caidic, Engelland, or Renren who can deliver the clutch when needed. Recall they also had Almario and Reyes. 1 Quote Link to comment
kenichi15
its still an achievement. in three years who wouldve thought that we will become the number 4th squad in asia? evidently the program is there. kailangan na lang ng continuity. and im mighty proud to say a ragtag team composed of old guys and young ones gave the best of asia one hell of fight and show the rest and the best in asia that the philippines is back on the asian basketball scene. i hope they keep the program and mix with the old hands marcus douthit & chris tiu, it would be better too if aldrech ramos and greg salughter rejoins the team and see the likes of kiefer ravena, nico salva, rr garcia, terrence romeo, chris tolomia, jeric teng, chris camus, bobby ray parks, rome dela rosa, garvo lanete, ian sangalang, calvin abueva, jam cortez, carlo lastimosa and even jeron teng invited to try out for the squad. hats off to mvp and the staff and the smart gilas team. 1 Quote Link to comment
