Loose firearms drive a success — PNP

By: Alfred P. Dalizon

PHILIPPINE National Police chief Director General Jesus A. Verzosa on Friday said the weapons collection target has been exceeded since last July as he announced a one-month extension of the Final Firearms Amnesty program.

The official said President Macapagal-Arroyo has approved their request for the extension of the General Firearms Amnesty provided under Executive Order No. 817 for another 30 days.

“This was in consideration of the numerous requests from the public and also AFP/PNP commanders in areas where typhoon ‘Ondoy’ and ‘Pepeng’ restricted their desire to avail of the firearms amnesty,” Verzosa told a press conference at Camp Crame.

Verzosa said that after the one-month extension, “there will be a massive crackdown on holders of loose firearms including those who failed to renew their licensed weapons.”

The PNP has successfully carried out the President’s directive for the PNP to reduce the number of loose firearms by at least three percent every month since the firearms control campaign started in July, Verzosa added.

As of the latest count for the period ending October 28, Verzosa said they have accounted for a total of 171,337 out of the estimated 1.1 million loose firearms they have targeted. The baseline figure for loose firearms had been placed at 938,940 as of yesterday.

PNP Civil Security Group director Chief Supt. Ireno A. Bacolod said that out of the figure, 15,394 loose firearms were registered by their owners since July.

Moreover, a total of 150,886 expired firearms licenses were renewed during the period while administrative procedures are being carried out to account for firearms in the custody of the courts and other government-owned firearms being kept by government agencies and other officers, Verzosa said.

The Armed Forces alone has around 200,000 firearms still to be licensed by the PNP Firearms and Explosives Division headed by Chief Supt. Alfredo N. Caballes, Bacolod said.

“This is the reason why we have established Joint Firearms Control Desks nationwide in line with our effort to account for all these weapons,” Bacolod added. He also explained that the final gun amnesty is a huge success considering the fact that only 20,000 took advantage of a similar firearms amnesty last year.

The PNP chief said that intensified internal security and anti-criminality operations since last July by the PNP resulted in the seizure of 4,957 loose firearms.

“Despite these significant developments, we feel the need to give firearm holders more time to renew expired firearms licenses and register loose firearms. Thus, we have sought for a 30-day extension from Nov. 1-30 of the General Firearms Amnesty,” Verzosa said.

Verzosa said that even with an amnesty in effect, aggressive police action will continue to account for loose firearms in the hands of threat groups and criminal elements.

Ranger9, as sir arsonist stated that the gun ban will come into effect on january, it would be better if you applied for a permit to range. i know that the ptr is only for 3 months, but then it won't be a waste of money like getting a ptc and being not able to carry a pistol for 6 months

Salamat Sir Miggy & Shinta n rin po.......

Hope you help me ..... sana po pag i can shoot n kitakita po sana po tayo sa mtc shooting contest.... hehehehe

Technically there is a problem per AFAD rules...but per practice, for as long as your FA is licensed and not expired there will be no problem.

FED computers had problem sometimes wherein even you change your address at the application form during renewal, still the old address will be printed on your FA ID card. This happened to my rifles and pistols. The essence is, make sure that you FA's license is renewed on time and there will be no question or problem at all.

Just one thing for PTT and PTCFOR holder, be sure to bring always the FA ID with you.

GOOD LUCK AND SAFETY SHOOTING.

ranger9, i think the PTR could be applied at at the nearest reputable gun club. :sleepysmiley03: they would usually have all the papers you need to sign, and could help you in the processing.

sana po pag i can shoot n kitakita po sana po tayo sa mtc shooting contest................Good idea, why not organize 1ST MTC SHOOTING COMPETITION...it's a good start to promote responsible gun ownership to MTC members. Suggest, level 1 competition so that preparation will be easy. Too bad, nasa State pa ako. Hope to see you guys in the range.

Once Im in Manila, I will teach some techniques in practical shooting. Prepare at least 300 rounds of ammo and of course, prepare to stay in the range the whole day. See you guys this december.

(Danilo Garcia)
