Manual Or Automatic?

Recommended Posts

Conventional and old A/Ts are notoriously gas guzzlers because they are a bit dumb and spends a lot of time gear-hunting. If an engine is in a wrong gear, obviously it'll consume more gas. Plus, it doesn't give you any confidence especially when trying to overtake a vehicle.

Newer A/Ts have significantly improved and are much more intelligent BUT on tricky situations, will still hunt for gears, especially on uphill, accelerating climb. Plus the fact that shiftshocks can be felt while tranny changes gears. Also, these A/Ts have to rely on torque converter where significant engine power is lost.

CVTs doesn't have any of these problems. It has infinite number of gear ratios, changing constantly, adapting to the road and rev condition. No gear hunting. And no shift shocks. No torque converter and engine is as responsive as manual.

And if these isn't enough, CVTs can be converted to a clutchless manual all in a press of a button, (disadvantage, now there's shift shock, consumption is worse; advantage, it gets even more responsive)

D(rive) is still the bes position to save fuel. The S(ports) mode is introduced, high, perky revs. No more D3, D2, D1.

So with CVT you get to enjoy the responsiveness of a manual and the comfort of an A/T.

Thanks, which model has the sports mode?

Honda City 1.5 VTi, but even the 1.3 iDSI has the S mode.

Sports mode gives you a higher rev than usual, making it more responsive and gives you a push on acceleration.

The gears are:

Drive

Sports

Low

Both D and S can be driven using the

CVT or

the 7 Speed automatic or

the 7 Speed Manual.

So, technically I have seven kind of transmission in this thing (R not counted.). Really versatile.
