Dvd Collectors

I started collecting original DVDs 3 years ago and never bought pirated copies for myself anymore. Compared to my other collector friends, I have the smallest collection of a little less than a hundred but I'm very proud of my own since they're originals. My most favorites are the LOTR Extended editions, Star Wars original trilogy, 300 steelbook edition & The Matrix Ultimate Collection. :thumbsupsmiley:

I'm a bit collector here :D, just started collecting a few dvds since 2003 and now i'm eyeing on the next gen dvds which is HD DVD.

Though specs to viewing this new format is too high. (or depending on what resolution/s)

Many of you are already know this HD DVD format but if someone don't know yet, here are some infos:

Audio

HD DVD discs support encoding in up to 24-bit/192 kHz for two channels, or up to eight channels of up to 24-bit/96 kHz encoding. For reference, even new big-budget Hollywood films are mastered in only 24-bit/48 kHz, with 16-bit/48 kHz being common for ordinary films.

All HD DVD players are required to decode linear (uncompressed) PCM, Dolby Digital AC-3, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD. A secondary soundtrack, if present, can be stored in any of the aforementioned formats, or in one of the HD DVD optional codecs: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS-HD Master Audio.

For the highest-fidelity audio experience, HD DVD offers content-producers the choice of linear PCM, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Due to the high-bandwidth requirements of linear-PCM, lossless audio on HD DVD movies has thus far been delivered in the lossless format Dolby True-HD.

Video

The HD DVD format supports a wide variety of resolutions, from low-resolution CIF and SDTV, all video resolutions supported by the DVD-Video standard, and up to HDTV formats such as 720p, 1080i and 1080p. HD DVD supports video encoded in MPEG2 which is what is used in DVDs as well as the new formats VC-1 and AVC which are more efficient. All movie titles released so far have had the feature encoded in 1080p, with most supplements in 480i or 480p. Almost all titles are encoded with VC-1, and most of the remaining titles encoded with AVC.

I'm currently downloading a HD DVD format of the movie Saving Private Ryan (on a 720p resolution) with a enourmous size of 10gb (i still don't know if this a raw size or compressed one) and will gonna compare it on a original dvd format once it completed. :thumbsupsmiley:

hey guys....i have a question for you...if you collect pirated dvds - can u really call it a collection? or the the word collection means original dvds only.

I got a friend who has around 300 pirated dvds as a collection (good titles good quality) but he isnt proud to tell his friends about his collection. Sabi nya buti na lang kung mga 20 na original na lang binili nya instead of the 300 pirated ones. Do you think he has point?

I would like to post the same question to the peeps.. What do you think.. If your collection is mostly pirated, would you still consider it as a worthy collection?

My take: In my case, I would consider pirated DVD's as worthy collectibles as well, as long as the quality is good.. I have my own fair share of original DVD's but to be honest with you, some pirated DVD-9's or the DVD's from China are much like the original ones.. Since the introduction of the China-made pirated DVD's, I started to buy several pirated copies again, and I have upgraded some of my poor-DVD-copies to these China-made DVD's..

A lot of the films that I have bought, are not released here in the PI.. The Fly, Clockwork Orange, Nails, Monamour, Citizen Kane.. not even in VCD format..

And BTW, I also have a lot of original VCD's.. IMO, No one can really say that your movie collection is cheap if they are pirated versions.. Even the rich can be practical right? I can say that I collect movies (and concerts) rather than just DVD's..

I really don't count the number of DVD's I have.. A close estimate would be at around 400.. mixture of original and pirated ones.. But siguro walang 1/4 and original..hehehe!!! My VCD collection is at around 200-250 (originals lahat) siguro.. Been trying to collect good films (DVD/VCD format) for almost 7 years now..

I don't buy all the movies that I see.. I try to read something about the movie first (usually, in IMDB.com) before purchasing one, but if referred by friends, I would most probably buy one..

Currently, I am looking for several movies/docus, namely:

1) Rosemary's Baby

2) Hated: GG Allin

3) The Decline of Western Civilization Parts 1-3

4) Sid and Nancy

5) The Devil's Rejects

Was "Rome and Juliet" (Mylene Dizon and Andrea Del Rosario) released in VCD/DVD?

I can't seem to find titles such as "Tinimbang ka ngunit kulang" and "City after dark" by Ishmael Bernal. How I loathe the death of our film industry.

You can try contacting Unitel for that... I think they have website up at cinefilipino, com and they're releasing said titles soon...
