SAGA

Ex-members of Fludd, bassist Jim Crichton, drummer Steve Negus, and keyboard player Peter Rachon formed Saga (originally called Pockets) in the late '70s with guitarist Ian Crichton and vocalist Michael Sadler. Part of Canada's '70s progressive rock movement with Rush, the group released a self-titled album in 1978, Images at Twilight (1979), Silent Knight (1980), Worlds Apart (1981), In Transit (1982), Heads or Tails (1983), Behaviour (1985), Security of Illusion (1993), Steel Umbrellas (1994), Generation 13 (1995), and Pleasure & the Pain (originally released on Bonaire in 1997 and subsequently reissued on Steamhammer/SPV in 2002). The new millennium has seen the band release a series of albums on Steamhammer/SPV, including 2001's House of Cards and two discs in 2003, Marathon and Full Circle

CHAMPAIGN

Champaign took its name from its home city of Champaign, IL. The group was an interracial septet comprising singers Pauli Carman and Rena Jones, guitarist Howard Reeder, keyboardists Michael Day and Dana Walden, bassist Michael Reed, and percussionist Rocky Maffitt. They hit a commercial peak with their 1981 debut album, How 'Bout Us, whose title track was a hit single (Top Five in the U.K. and on the U.S. R&B chart). Follow-ups included Modern Heart (1983) (which includes the Top Ten R&B hit "Try Again") and Woman in Flames (1984), featuring the R&B Top Ten hit "Off and On Love."

ISLEY, JASPER, ISLEY

A spin-off from the Isley Brothers, bassist Marvin Isley, drummer/guitarist Ernie Isley, and their keyboardist cousin Chris Jasper worked in the Isley Brothers 3 + 3 band from 1969 until 1984. They signed with Columbia as a separate entity at that time, and had substantial success with their debut LP Broadway's Closer to Sunset Boulevard. Their 1985 release Caravan of Love included their only R&B chart-topping single in the title cut, which had a three-week reign at number one. They scored three other Top 20 singles in 1986 and 1987, "Insatiable Woman," "8th Wonder of the World," and "Givin' You Back the Love."

mid to late 80s nasa hisgh school pa ako non....my first real gimmick was in rythm n booze in makati...dun kami pumunta after ng JS Prom namin....i remember gettin' wasted there, nagbabatuhan kami ng chicken lollipop...hehe....totoy pa kasi e....

i dont know that many Pinoy Jazz Artists......im a guitarist you see so i would come watch these guys play there hearts out every weekend (usually sundays)...it's like church for them where they go to cleanse themselves of the sinful act of playin' the usual showband covers that is their bread n butter to bask in the purity of the music that gives them life...JAZZ

AYA YUSONguitar, TOTS TOLENTINOsax, ELMHIR SAISONkeys,WAWI POSADASkeys,TATENG KATINDIGkeys,JOE QUIRINOkeys,BENJIE MENDEZdrums,IRA CRUZguitars,and numerous others who i cant remember.

they used to hold there weekly JAZZ JAMMING at roxbury's in pasay road, w/c i think moved to various venues like freedom bar, padis las piñas, galos (now 19east---w/c is owned by wawi posadas...i think it's still around)...im currently residing in santa monica now so i dont know kung meron at kung san ang JAZZ JAMMING ngayon.

pasensya na at off topic....well maybe not so off....these guys not only listened to the jazz boom of the 80s...but theyre the bonafide troubadors of the jazz scene then...putting where music is best heard ...in a live setting...i dont mean to offend anyone here guys....but being a musician...ang enjoyment ng live music...men...it's great to watch it being performed in front of your eyes....galing talaga men....

mga peeps, remember mike francis? came to manila and did concerts in the mid 80s. i understand he's italian and not known in the states. i don't know what to make of of his music. can you call it jazz? or more like pop jazz? one of his big hits back then was suddenly back to you.

Yes, he is an Italian singer/song writer. In my opinion his most popular song (among Pinoys at that time) is "Let Me In" followed closely by "Lovely Day". I would classify him as a pop jazz artist, but it is still jazz right? :)

hello jazz lovers, the only jazz band that i listen to is

everything but the girl

first heard them on = home movies  ( best of EBTG )

then i went crazy started to

collect their CDs, i think i almost completed them, except the one

released in the US.

But i stopped at AMPLIFIED HEART, because after that naging techno techno na sila.

i try to listen to ella fitzgerald, and michael franks too.

I also love EBTG...cool na cool ang voice ni Tracey...did not stop admiring them even after they became techno...currently Ben is still active as a DJ...

Yes, he is an Italian singer/song writer. In my opinion his most popular song (among Pinoys at that time) is "Let Me In" followed closely by "Lovely Day". I would classify him as a pop jazz artist, but it is still jazz right? :)

I don't think Mike Francis' music is pop-jazz. It's just pop. Yes, there is very little jazz influence, but I wouldn't consider that pop-jazz... songs are too repetitive and there's no improvisation, which is the essence of jazz. But I like his music. Kenny G plays pop-jazz.

AYA YUSONguitar, TOTS TOLENTINOsax, ELMHIR SAISONkeys,WAWI POSADASkeys,TATENG KATINDIGkeys,JOE QUIRINOkeys,BENJIE MENDEZdrums,IRA CRUZguitars,and numerous others who i cant remember.

I've seen these guys play a few times and I tell you, they are at par with the best jazz musicians in the world... malupit talaga. Tots and Tateng used to have weekly jams at Friends in St. Francis Square but that was years ago. I last saw Elmhir play at Freedom Bar months ago. I don't know where they play now. If I had the luxury of time, I would make sure that I always know where they play, and I'd watch them everytime.

I heard months ago that Tateng is in the US and is starting to make a name for himself in the jazz scene.
