orthodoc
Hi hint-of-lime, Thank you very for taking time to reply, I really-really do appreciate it. Sorry it took me a while to reply back. The main reason I have decided to consider THR is my 11 month old son. At my current fused hip, it's difficult to take care of a baby this small and there are things that we can't do as a family that would be possible given more flexibility on my legs. There's also work opportunities, discrmination is illegal anywhere, but it's inevitable that a person with walking impairment like myself to miss the short-list due to my "imperfection". Yes I've done some research before and I'm aware that THR components has a shorten life span, but I think in my personal circustance, the risk outweighs the benefit. Thanks again. You may be taking a lot of risk than the intended benefits. The 15 to 20 year THR survivorship mentioned by HOL is the reported longest survival if a primary THR is done on an appropriate patient, done by very experienced surgeons. Based on anecdotal reports, the average survival done in our country is around 10 years. As HOL, has previously mentioned you will also have to undergo intensive postop PT to "re-train" your previously fused hip. There are also several limitations of a THR hip: * You cannot cross your legs * You cannot bend your legs up beyond 90 degrees * You have to be very careful when sitting on sofas or in low chairs as this may cause dislocations * In some instances, you cannot sleep on your operative side Most orthopods ease these precautions after rehabilitation, but total hip replacements are less stable than normal hips even years after surgery.I call the Total Joint Replacement Surgery-- the point of no return because once you underwent the procedure, you cannot avoid the possibility of revision. The revision procedure becomes a problem if the primary surgery was done on a relatively young patient as this may entail a LOT of subsequent revisions thereon. The irreversible problem will then have to be expected-- when there wont be adequate remaining bone that will hold the prosthesis in place.--- An orthopod's nightmare! Well, there are options of allograft but the results are not really encouraging. And hey. I havent yet discussed the possibility of infection---another orthopod's nightmare. Once infection sets in deep, the only option would be a series of debridement, removal of implant and very expensive antibiotics. And so, I echo HOL's suggestion, as much as possible delay the primary THR for as long as you can tolerate it. For once you take the road to THR, you are burning the bridges behind you. boygenpact
Nordette to the best of my knowledge and according to MIMS is NOT a morning after pill. It is not for emergency use only and should be taken on the first day of menstruation like any ordinary contraceptive pills. Then again maybe the MIMS that i'm using is outdated. ah ok... anyways, the mod deleted my topic "the morning-after pill" I don't know why. All i know is that its a medical topic and we are entitled know more about contraceptions and one of them is "morning-after" pills (because most topics here in MTC are related to sex that lead the members to sex). The condom broke while having sex... And i wanna make sure that my girl don't get pregnant... Instead in trusting the "coke and medicol" thing... According to the internet, "morning-after" pills must be taken with 72 hours of sex... i hope someone here knows or is using one will help in sharing... Quote Link to comment

johardue
Doctors of MTC, i have a question about gastro, nutrition, and weightloss.. Un bestfriend ko na girl has had a this problem since we were back in college, she sometimes can't eat, and her upper abdomen hurts. I can't really describe this situation but it just happened suddenly to her long way back. And after awhile she got used to it, and gave up on getting a cure. She went to around more than 10 different doctors in different fields already, from gastro, to internal med and such. She even got this tube put down her throath.. Can't remember the proccess's name.. And everything the doctors were speculating turned out wrong. Like its a new condition or something. In the end we gave up on diagnosing it. Anyway, I'm really worried about her health.. Its been almost 10 years already since she's been having this.. My question would be that my friend eats a lot everyday, she eats breakfast with 2 cups of rice, lunch with 3, and dinner with 3 i think. She's also a monster when it comes to buffets.. But this past 2 years, she's been steadily loosing weight even though she eats like that everyday. Back then when we were in college she still had meat, and now she's thin as a bone. And she's still getting thinner.. Is this weigthloss related with her diet? She doesnt' eat fatty and overly oily foods naman, though a lot of sweets (ie. cakes, cookies, etc). How about worms? Possible kaya? But her stomach doesn't get big naman (I heard this happens when the worm grows right?). I've been asking her if she would want to visit a Nutrisionist, maybe this would help.. Any recommendations? Thanks mga docs! First, flattered namn ako sa term na "house gastro". (nye!) But please, I'm just another respondent/poster in these fora. Well anyways, SpecNyt, your friend's case is not an ordinary one and madami pa kailangan info na hindi na-provide. For example, pano yung bowel movement nya - nag diarrhea ba sya or normal lang ang stool. May vomiting ba? These two questions provides a whole lot of answers. I can cite some possibilities from a gastro's perspective. Specially kung nag diarrhea sya she might be suffering from any of the malabsorption syndromes. Pwedeng pancreatic insufficiency (lack of pancreatic enzymes) or even chronic pancreatitis. Pwede ding problem sa lining ng small or large intestines (any of the rare or not so rare enteritides or colitides e.g. eosinophilic enteritis or colitis; inflammatory bowel disease e.g. Crohn's or ulcerative colitis among others. But I'm quite sure napick-up namn tong mga to kung nag-consult sya sa gastro. Would you remember the endoscopy results? Other conditions come to mind like endocrine disorders - diabetes, hyperthyroidism (specially kung namamayat kahit malakas kumain. Di ba lumaki or lumuwa ng konti ang mata?); Tuberculosis, di lang sa lungs kundi sa ibang bahagi ng katawan (stomach, intestines, etc). Other possibilities that are worth considering are Psychiatric conditions particularly Bulimia. Di kaya kain sya ng kain tapos i-vomit nya lang secretly? Kasi the way you describe her, she seems to be eating a lot yet pumapayat sya. And how about recreational drug use? These are just but opinions. Iba pa rin yung makita at mainterview and ma-physical exam and patient. I hope di ako lalo nakagulo. Quote Link to comment
angel_by_day
cancer is a possibility too for unexplained weight loss....no matter how grim and remote. Quote Link to comment

aswang
I have a friend who has insomnia and is taking sleeping pills prescribed by the doctor. However, she was taken to the hospital because she hasn't waked up for 4 days now. We are not sure if she has taken more than what is prescribed. How serious is this? Anyone knows similar incident and how long we are going to wait? Quote Link to comment
zyclonenuz
Guys just wanna ask about Diet pills. Well the problem is I have a low metabolism and i get hungry fast. Any diet pills out there to suppress the hunger ? I'm currently on Xenical for almost 2months na and i think i just lost like 1-2 points by the way I can't do any exercise like jogging or treadmill because of the permanent injury I sustained on both of my toes. I just want to get rid of some of the weight i have or a couple of in off from this belly of mine. Quote Link to comment

otitismedia
one more thing any medicine that can enhance metabolism ? have your thyroid hormone check (FT4,FT3,TSH), low thyroid hormone leads to low metabolism. Quote Link to comment
