kala ko si Kuya Vanni sabi mo - si Giovanni Calvo nawala na din. yung mga bading nun ang tawag badaf - I wonder what happened to that word  Nandun pa nun si Justo J. Justo - the perennial counilor from Pasay, and also the late Kapitana - Rey dela Cruz :upside:

Dani Vanni was this foreign beefcake who tried to break into local showbiz.

    Originally called himself Dani Diovanni.

If i remember right, his claim to fame was this Sarsi with egg ad.

  2. Since we're on the topic of parties, it's September,

and this EW&F song was so popular back then i remember

one party i went to where it must have been played

20 times. Yet the enthusiasm of the people for the song

    never waned.

It was Jovan Grass Oil then for me, and Carrera shades.

  3. The best Memory ko of watching movies in the Cubao area is smelling JOLLIBEE while (they literally place their exhaust fans near the ticket booth) making pila for tickets.

My girlfriends and I had a heydey watching those disco movies... Saturday Night Fever and Thank God its Friday... and the best love story Evergreen... ay naku!! Having a wonderful senior moment here!! :-)

C&M Siopao! Katabi ng mga sinehan sa aurora. We'd always buy

those para i-baon. Had the best asado siopao.

  4. pards do you also remember that other film in sensurround - ROLLERCOASTER - a thriller starring George Segal? Your seats were pounding and shaking and it was as if you were riding the rollercoaster itself.....it gave me quite a thrill back in my teens hehehe

Yup, and as Storm mentioned, yung Earthquake. Had you "quaking" in

anticipation of the first tremor. Ok na rin at the time, better then those

3-D movies which gave me a splitting headache.

  5. One of the stars in "The Rat Patrol" was Gary Raymond, who also played the villain in that wonderful film "Jason and the Argonauts" (aka "The Golden Fleece").  "The Rat Patrol" also starred this handsome European (the German officer) who later became a regular in "The Young and the Restless."

I really loved those 70s (and 60s) war/mission movies.  To me, the best were The Wild Geese, Operation Daybreak (with Timothy Bottoms and this fellow from "The Professionals"), A Bridge Too Far, The Eagle has Landed, and others that my withered mind can't recall at the moment.  Put in The Guns of Navarone as well (not 70s, but what the heck).

Speaking of "Operation Daybreak," it was based on an actual British mission (using Czechs) to assassinate the "butcher of Prague."  The same "butcher of Prague" was played many years later by Shakespearean actor/director Kenneth Branagh in the HBO production "Conspiracy."  As a spoiler (sorry, folks, but this is an old film anyway), "Operation Daybreak" ended with Timothy Bottoms and his friend shooting each other in the head as the Germans were flooding the basement.

I never cared much for the 80s, 90s, and later war films because they came across too much as propaganda (eg. Delta Force, Rambo, Missing in Action, etc).

I remember " The Rat Patrol " on tv. This bunch of americans on willy's jeeps

with mounted .50 cal machine guns fighting off hordes of tigers and panzers.

  6. Is Maximilian Schell still alive?

Now that I've got a working DVD player ( ), I might as well add Judgment at Nuremberg among the titles I would hunt for...

I clearly remember Schell in Krakatoa, East of Java - one of the early disaster films. Thinking of it now brings back memories of that tsunami...

Also have no idea kung buhay pa. If I remember right he

always played some cold, stoic, anti-hero.

  7. Since we're on the topic of war movies, what about that parody

on the Cold War mania of the '50's? Dr. Strangelove. This

b-52 pilot tried to manually release the H-bomb, sat on top of it,

in the process riding it cowboy-style as it dropped toward its

destination. Kept shrieking Heeehah! and waving his cowboy hat all the way down.

Sorry ha, but 70's pa ba ito? Black and white kasi eh, although

i'm sure the choice of film stock was more in keeping in tune with

    the 50's motif.

  8. If I remember correctly, that British officer actually marched on the bridge and even demanded that the Germans surrender.  When it was the British who actually surrendered (what a great battle that was!!), a German officer offered some chocolate to Anthony Hopkins, who wouldn't take it.  The German officer said, in effect, "It's OK.  We got this from you."

Yup, Maximilian Schell was the German officer.

Wow, I just gotta find a copy of this movie. Have been nostalgic

    for these old wwii movies.

In fact, just got me a copy of 'The Eagle Has Landed.'

A trim and fit Michael Caine as a maverick German colonel tasked

with assassinating Churchill. Robert Duvall supports as his senior officer.

  9. Mahal na kasi bayad sa artista ngayon. Imagine

shelling out approx $ 20M for just one superstar.

Another great scene in A Bridge Too Far: This British officer

with an umbrella peeking over the apex of this bridge

to see if more Germans were coming.

    Inching ever closer and closer...

  10. of course who can forget Quezon Theater. Of course there's the new Gateway and I haven't been to Cubao in ages pero dun ako naloko sa Aurora dati.

grabe ang memory mo pare. I can't recall what movie I saw in what theater basta dun ko napanuod yung mga Shalako ni Sean Connery, ONce Upon A Time in the West, yung Battle of the Bulge, Longest Day, Dog Day Afternoon....yung Godfather sa New Frontier hindi namin napanuod kasi hindi kami pinapasok For Adults lang

Speaking of The Longest Day, anyone know where i can get

a copy of this movie? Have been looking for it for the

    longest time.

  11. inabot mo pa yung Delta?! :P Well yes nung araw nga ganun lang ang pamasahe galing UP papunta dun. Ako naman sa Cubao nagsisine galing UP - New Frontier, Nation, Remar, Coronet.....

It could be that the yawning jaws of the great white gave your partner the idea to get it on.

sana nga may Time Machine mabalik man lang tayo kahit isang linggo dun sa 70's :goatee:

Don't forget the Quezon theaters. Dinagdagan ng Quezon 2.

May katabi pang Fun Center yun dati.

The precursor of the video arcades na pinasara rin ni Marcos.

Tapos everyone transferred to Ali Mall kaya naglaho na

yung appeal nung mga theaters along Aurora blvd.

  12. Talking about the 70's...

Have you guys heard about this "Nutri bun" thingy which they used to give out in school daw?

Do you guys remember "choco vim"?

There used to be this TV ad for a refrigerator, with a bald pinoy actor.  One lady comes up to him and asks "Ice pugo please", instead of "Ice buko".

Royal tru Orange used to have "pulp bits" are they real or plastic bits?  I remember hadji alejandro doing the TV ad "RTO pag ibig kong tunay".

  13. I remember those!

The first one I had was the Fire Department scene which had Firemen in all sorts of emergency poses.

The dog fight issue was also vefry nice!

Now a days, the kids have plain stickers which is almost the same concept but not as fun to do.

I remember the Gas Rationing well. My father drove a huge Camaro and and 1970 Benz. Both cars were guzzlers so we slowly went to using a Datsun and Toyota for the first time.

    :)

Favorite ko nga yung dogfight. Pero if i remember right,

nagkahalo-halo yata yung Americans, British, Germans, and Japanese

sa scenario. I guess to an 8 yr old di na importante yung accuracy.

  14. We had a gasoline station noong 70s and grabeng pila noon. Mas tinamaan noon ang mga manufacturers and fishermen. They have to buy coupons.

Nagbebenta ba kayo dati nung 'action transfers?'

  15. Oo nga pala, it was the marcos era that time.  I guess they had more leeway than the others.

I suddenly remembered the gas rationing nung araw.  When you were given this booklet tapos when you lined up for gas, pipilasin mo yung booklet stating how much gusto mong pakarga.  My dad used to keep watch over the usage of the booklet nun.

I also remembered those days when he would say "tara! swimming tayo!". then we would all hop on to the jeep, dog included and drive to roxas blvd. park sa tabi, tapos ligo na! ngayon, just looking at the waters dun sa coastal road, water's black!

Yup, rationing tickets, if i remember right, were in

    denominations of 5,10,20, and 30.

Di naman namin maubos, kasi parang 500 liters/mo

    ang allocation.

  16. di ba one of the hard hitting newspapers that time was the "Daily Express", yung offices nila, malapit sa pier?

I'm not sure about it being on of the 'hard-hitting' papers.

Yung natira kasing tatlo, Manila Bulletin,Times Journal, and the

Daily Express were only allowed to operate under the

watchful eyes of the Marcos boys. Siguro minsan

binibigyan ng leeway para di naman masyadong

    matatakan.

  17. Welcome to the thread flyingdutchman.

I left at 9pm and he's not yet there. Wala yung pasimuno ng eb. Tinatawagan pero cannot be reach yung cel :D

Dahil sa curfew, nauso ang stay-in typars. Maraming happenings kapag stay-in

Thanks Storm. Great to talk about the old days with you guys.
