  1. I believe this also starred Panchito and Babalu.  A really memorable scene was Panchito turning to stone with bread sticking out from his mouth.  Who was the female lead anyway?  Was it Rosanna Ortiz?

Yup, Panchito and Babalu were his two conniving siblings, and Rosanna Ortiz

    played the human 'Ibong Adarna.'

  2. Caught the old Dolphy television movie 'Ibong Adarna' on

Ch.11 recently. Laughing trip, especially that tribal leader

Apo Tom Dooley, who would reverse his words whenever he

spoke: 'Kadla ka na lang, wan-i mo na yokaba mo todi."

Mababaw pero had me in stitches anyway.

  3. My dad designed the 1c, 25c and 50c coins as well as the 20 and 100 peso bills that are still in circulation. Incidentally, I took the photos of the Malacañang Palace and the Central Bank building used on the other side.

Wow, then he's responsible for the words 'Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas' discreetly

written on the first row of the building on the 100 peso bill? Pure genius.

  4. Those cellophanes were put to 'protect' the viewer from harmful radiation. hehehehe

I remember our old zenith TV console has that one.

vacuum tubes pa noon, so you have to wait a long time to get the tubes warmed up to see the program.

We also had a zenith b/w tv. Ang tagal mag-on tapos pag matagal nang bukas

    parang ang init naman masyado.

  5. I remember the KP5, Momo steering wheels, Bitoy's and Nodalo's headers.

Also the Recaro bucket seats. Pero parang 80's na nga yata ito.

And don't forget the obligatory "rubber duck" antenna.

Tapos if you were into CB, you just had to have the K40 antenna.

My favorite cars were the 76Colt and L-type Lancer.

Thought the Torana was an absolute lemon.

  6. My son is 15yrs old and has been eyeing one of the cars. I learned to drive when I was 15, got my license (adjusted age to 18). Pero hindi ako pinayagang mag-drive mag-isa until I became 18, tapos inayos yung license to reflect my true age.  Kaya noon kapag may ka-date ako, nasa likod ng car yung driver. Tipong bodyguard ang dating niya. :P

Sarap lang noon ay hindi ako ang nagpapark ng car. :D

I remember when i was just starting to drive talagang excited ako taking the car out.

Also had to "tweak" my docs to get a license before the legal age, then took advantage

of the LTO amnesty sometime in the 80s to update to the correct age.

Noon nakikiusap ka pa sa driver to let you drive, ngayon i find driving so taxing that

    i wish i had a driver.

  7. In other words, karma. :)

Buti na lang I don't have a daughter to worry about.  Good boy kasi ako nuong araw eh.  But then again, it doesn't mean having a son is that much easier.  I guess you guys would agree that we do have other things to worry about with our boys.

Para naman hindi masyado malayo ang usapan:  I guess the 70s was a time when a lot of us here experienced a lot of firsts.  First date, first taste of beer, first cigarette, first puff of weed even. . .  Speaking of which, the stuff that kids nowadays are exposed to, nakakatakot na.  (Ayan! Parent mode na naman!)

Two things quickly come to mind.  Remember Lim Seng?  He was the Chinese drug pusher who was sentenced to death by firing squad during the early years of Martial Law.  And I remember this commercial on TV where the message was to stay off drugs.  It featured this promising college guy who allegedly (the words I can't forget) "graduated from marijuana to LSD and then to heroin."  Then they showed his image inside a coffin.

I guess the only thing to hope for is that our kids gravitate towards the right crowd.

So medyo subtle na ang approach when we expose the child to the right people,

    tapos call na nila yun.

I also remember that drug ad, in fact if we're talking about the same ad,

that guy was one batch ahead of me in high school. Pretty boy, not exactly what

i'd call an intellectual heavyweight ( not that i'm one myself ) , but he was ok,

made the grade. I forget his name, though, and i suppose it wouldn't be proper to

mention it, although i hear he was able to recover from his darker days and even made

CEO in a rather large firm.

  8. hahaha! Grabe pala ang tight guarding mo JT...mala Freddie Webb  :P

I don't have a daughter and I don't think I ever will, so I can only speculate on how it would feel like if/when she introduces her first BF. When my 14 yr old son told me he had a GF, my initial instinctive reaction was to exchange a high five with him. Told me through an SMS message which is still preserved in my SIM card to this day.

I can relate with jt. Have a daughter myself and i shudder when i think

about her having to eventually mingle with boys. I had previously resolved

to keep my hands off her cellphone to respect her privacy, but now i'm not so sure.

    Sama no?

  9. To be honest, I wasn't abe to sleep when I first saw The Exorcist. Something about that possession thing. Tama ka 16track - the worst part was washing your face or your hair, kasi you have to close your eyes for a while eh...I found myself doing that part a little faster para I can open my eyes sooner  :P I haven't read the book but after your narration, I think I will. William or Norman or Peter Blatty ba yung name ng author?

Alas, that was Linda Blair's 15 minutes. She was relegated to low budget films where she would almost always show her breasts.

They shouldn't have made all those crappy prequels and sequels.

Nakakahiya mang aminin, but Linda Blair was actually my object of desire in those low budget films.

I remember this movie where she was an inmate in this jail where they were

constantly being abused. The obligatory shower scene.....

Thanks for the info re: sources for old songs at MCS. Sayang our office was

close to that area before we moved to Pasig. But will still check it out.

    Cheers!

  10. My Top 10 personal signs of growing old:

    1) I do the hiring in the company I work in. I actually read a resume of an applicant whose father is as old as I am.

    2) I never knew the day would come. An applicant is literally half my age.

    3) When going out, my college buddies would still ogle some cute girls, and I'd say, "pare ang babata naman nyan"!

    4) I can only stay an hour in a noisy bar.

    5) It's rise and shine for me at 5:50AM. It's Sunday.

    6) I nag my son about doing well in school because it's "for his own good".

    7) I drive a sedate 70kph on a traffic free hiway.

    8) I listen to Deo Macalma and DZRH on the AM radio every morning drive to work.

    9) I actually worry about work I'm not attending to when on vacation.

    10) I can't stand hip-hop music.

For me, wala na akong kilala sa mga banda ngayon. Clueless would

be the right term. My daughter knows about them a lot more, then

I'd be wondering where in the hell she got to know about them.

    And she's only 9.

Also i tend to linger more in the "Best of" section sa mga record stores.

Do they still actually say "Record Store?"

  11. Another great line from The Godfather :

"Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer."

And not really a line, but that scene where the director discovers

his prize horse's head on his bed :

AAAAHHHHH!!!!! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!! ( ad infinitum )

  12. sliderule!

Yep,, GODFATHER FANATIC OVER HERE! heheh!  :boo:

The scene you just described was a memorable one. The footsteps belonged not to a thug but to a recent immigrant who was assisted by DOn Corleone in getting a decent job.

Michael      : Who are you? ( rather nervously )

Immigrant  :  (in a very thick Italian accent and quite proudly) I am Enzo... the baker.. the baker!

    This movie rules!

No wonder critics had the Godfather series as being the all time best series [in competition with the LOTR trilogy] It's just good to remind people of how excellent this movie was!

Remember this  scene?:  The Corleone staff opens a package wrapped in newspaper. Inside was a fish..and Clemenza states:

It means, Luca Brassi sleeps with the fishes!  [referring to the Corleone hitman who was missing for some days. "Sleeping with the fishes" menat that the person's body was now under the sea.

    Cheers!

There are rumors that the character of Johnny Fontaine is actually Frank Sinatra.

Apparently ole blue eyes had one too many links with the Mafia. Totoo ba ito?

  13. I believe that Buonasera was an undertaker.  It was in a later scene with Buonasera that Vito Corleone said, "Look what they did to my boy."

Oo nga pala. I stand corrected. BTW, did you know that Coppola's original choice for

Don Vito was Sir Laurence Olivier? But Brando coveted the role so much that he invited

Coppola to his house one day and met him at the front door in full Don Vito get-up, tux,

cotton in his mouth, and all. Right then, Coppola was said to have decided the role

    was Brando's.

From Taxi Driver ( The great De Niro ) :

    "You talking to me?"

  14. Some memorable movie lines in the 70's:

Don Corleone  : If I was your friend... then people will fear you.

Bonasera        : Don Corleone, please be my friend?

    Can you add more?

    :upside:

In the above exchange in The Godfather, Don Vito shows his utter distaste

for the baker Buonasera by saying : " Buonasera, Buonasera. What have I ever

done to make you treat me so disrespectfully? "

My favorite line from the movie. Parang tatay rebuking an erring son.

  15. Masi, galing ng analysis mo, may meaningful substance talaga. Our lack of global competetivness in sports is not ingrained in our genes. Just look at Chinese dominance in other fields.

Flyingdutchman : wow your recall of those ads are something else: "Galing Mow Man"! Siguro hindi uminom ng Alaska si Nino hehehe

Bods, for athletics, I think yung high elevation ng Africans ang key facter to their success.

Anyway, sige - para makabalik si mareng augustmoon: Ano ba ang mga memorable 70's ads na inyong napanuod in your 70's black & white Zenith TV's with the "rabbit ears"?? Si flyingdutchman would probably have a wealth of ads to contribute..

    How about yung "Kaaaa-ro-neee-ya..."

    My all-time favorite 70's ad : The Levi's commercial with a bunch

of guys riding a vehicle with the top down tapos yung background music

was 'Let Your Love Flow' by the Bellamy Brothers. I can still hear the song

in my head whenever I think about the 70's:

    Let your love flow...

    Like a mountain stream...

  16. pare, adman ka ba? Natatandaan mo pa mga ads nung araw :P

I don't recall that Nino was in that Grow Tall ad but it's really a monumental mistake judging by how Nino is today. Kaya siguro hindi na mabenta ang Alaska :P

Nope, am not creative enough to be in advertising. Mahilig

lang talaga ako manood ng tv noon, and i wasn't the type who

would switch channels when an ad came on. Another reason

might have been hindi pa uso ang remote control noon and

tamad akong tumayo to change channels. :D

    Cheers!

  17. mas matalas memory mo, pare :P  siya nga yun!

and the boy there - si Wilfred Uytengsu yun if I'm not mistaken - they owned Alaska..

Yup, that was Wilfred Uytengsu nga yata. Just found out quite recently.

what about that 'Grow Tall, Little Man' ad with Nino Muhlach?

    Talk about wrong choices.

    Diba si Oliver din yun?

  18. kinda reminds me too of Tom Babauta? :P

Yup. Makes you wonder what's harder: our locals trying to make it in foreign shores,

or foreigners trying to make it here.

Anyway to keep in line with the theme, i remember seeing the Commodores

concert at Araneta, we were placed right in front of these humongous speakers

na talagang nakakabingi. Ringside nga, ubos naman eardrums mo.
