  1. Speaking of Cheech & Chong, some time ago I read a news bit about how they were searching for the "new" Cheech & Chong, but I never heard of it again - apparently it fizzled out. Rightfully so, there'll never be another like the original.

I don't know about you guys, but watching a new Betamax movie of C&C would not be complete without taking a mandatory puff or 2 of weed. I don't think we watched any of the movies while sober! You know how you'd laugh and laugh until no sound comes out of your mouth? Ganun!

Paul Reubens, better known as PeeWee Herman, appeared in Cheech & Chong's Next Movie, and boy was he weird (the "hamburger dude") !

Too bad Cheech is now more known for his sober roles. He's Canadian pala. Most of us thought he was Mexican.

You know what else was good to watch while on weed? The Gods Must Be Crazy. (sorry kung OT, 80's na yata ito)

  2. You can always go back to being hip. Gaya nga ng sabi ni Pareng NAZARETH

There's a reason... Let your love flow... That's hot.

Solid... some guys in a top-down convertible rolling down the highway.

Baka gusto niyo ng mp3 nito, can gladly provide.

  3. yes benny hill show, how can i forget that. one of my favorites lalo na yung binabatok batukan na matanda. favorite punching bag ni benny hill

Si Gaston!!! And don't forget those scantily-clad ladies. :boo:

  4. Those K-rations were really hits during the 70s.  They were great pasalubongs any time a friend or relative went to Clark and/or Subic.  While eating the stuff, you could pretend to be Sgt. Saunders or a character in "The Longest Day."  There were also dishes that you couldn't find in any supermarket in Metro at the time (eg. beef in apple sauce). I believe that those things have long since been replaced by "ready to eat" meals (I'm not quite sure if that's the term) which are lighter.  In other words, no more cans.

By the way, while those K-rations looked cool, they didn't give the GIs an advantage in war.  Way back when, sometime after the Vietnam War, a military man told me that that was one of the differences between the GIs and the Vietcong and the NVA.  The GIs needed those rations.  The VC and the NVA lived off the land.  That made the VC and the NVA faster and more flexible.  During that war, our lovely PI was so important, in the sense that no GI was sent to Vietnam for combat duty without first going through survival training in Subic, with the Aetas as their instructors.

How true? The Philippines has become so indispensable as a training venue for

the US that the phil gov't actually lets insurgency and terrorism flourish para

mapag-praktisan ng mga kano. Not to mention the money made from military ops.

  5. The best was Humanities - classes held in a darkened air-conditioned room, slides of artworks would be shown which was a great opportunity to catch a few zzz's.

Dutchman, ano nga ba yung 'EPN'? Yun ba yung volunteers who assist in the enrollment process?

Anybody had Mrs Sonza for English classes? Her classes were fun. Teka... nagiging fighting maroons thread na yata ito. Sorry...

EPN was the Enlistment Priority Number. Bunutan tapos rank either ascending

or descending. Later they decided to use the 1st 3 or last 3 digits of your student no.

  6. Enrollment - UP Diliman, circa' late 70's: Anong oras kayo pumupunta sa campus, at sino ang mga profs na sinigurado nyong makukuha ninyo? Ako si Philip Waite. History yata sya eh. There's another famous Spanish teacher si Ms. Sailing. On the other side of the coin naman for Math si Miss Mapa.

Nung freshmen kayo, na shock din ba kayo nung medical exam??

Thanks for the welcome back T, actually it wasn't as chilly as the previous weeks. Lower 20s lang. I don't think we were classmates in Anton's class because we didn't have to select topics at random. Grabe naman yun! Congrats on your 1.5! Dos lang ang nakuha ko.

I used to see Rod Paulate in campus in the medyo early 80s na. Bing Pimentel was UP too diba? Other 'babes' at that time were Alicia Cuenca and Crispy Santamaria, but I think they were from other schools.

Worst class I ever had was PI 100, Tues/Thu at 7AM. Lalo na when I had to stay up late for a Math exam..el terrible!

Ok lang ba maski early 80's na ko nag-college sa UP? Di na ko masyado na-shock sa

physical kasi we would do that even when we were in UP Elem.

Used to see Roderick Paulate too, speech major yata. Kasabay ko nung 80's sila

Tweety de Leon, Martin Nievera, Raymond Lauchengco, and Jon Hernandez.

Free sched ako during my freshman first sem, so had to enlist in each subject.

Buti na lang suwerte sa EPN.

  7. Dang Cecilio came from STC Manila batch 78. In 1978, I was supposed to date her sa isang ball pero hindi natuloy. I never thought that she was so pretty because her name then was Endang Cecilio and it was a girl (who eventually became my girlfriend for a month) who was setting up the "blind date" (well kapag girl kasi ang nagbigay ng date, hindi ako umaasang maganda). When I met Endang in UP, gf ko naman noon yung classmate niya. Then, nanalo pa siyang Bb. Pilipinas.

Noong 70s, I dated once sa MassComm Ball si Loren Legarda. Walang nangyari :P

Another showbiz personality na nag-UP: Dina Bonnevie.

When I joined NCOTC ( yup, nag NCO ako, sabi kasi sa akin that was

one way to evade those stupid parades ), one of my 'missions' was

    to get her autograph.

I remember her asking me if I was a neophyte, then signing : Dina Bonnevie-Sotto.

The student number was 77 or 78-something, if i remember right.

  8. Space Invaders! It had such a ubiquitous sound....PSSHEEW! My favorite past time, 1 peso a game. A close second was Pac Man but I could never get past 5-6 rounds. Also got addicted to Dpnkey Kong. Compare with today's game that cost 20 bucks a pop. Aybody remember Night Rider? Going way, way back in the past...pinball games in Cubao wpuld cost 25 centavos a game.

Bad trip na bad trip ako nung pinatanggal ni Makoy yung mga game room.

I remember one time seeing a crowd milling around a galaxians game in greenhills,

yun pala it was Dang Cecilio playing tapos she was unaware that her top button was

    unbuttoned so nasisilipan siya.

Nung nasa UP Elem ako i wandered sa may School of Economics (layo)

tapos saw her for the first time.

Ganda talaga! Tapos beauty and brains pa, kasi if i remember right she started sa Eng'g kaya

lang she had to shift to Econ. She was the perfect girl for me back then.

  9. A bit of more recent trivia for you... Men have taken to using purses now.. similar to the clutchbag of the 70s. Theyre called men-purses, ranging in size from the usual clutch bag size to the messenger bag size :P

Couldn't they come up with a better name?

jt, maybe the ubiquitous paco rabanne and ray-bans went into your clutchbag? :D

  10. Clutchbag?  Dioskopo.  Remember how those things were so popular during the 70s?  It seemed as if everyone had them.  Pagandahan pa nga ng clutchbag.  Pai-ibang style pa ng pagdala.  When my father heard that boys were using clutchbags, he was incredulous.  "That will be the day," he said.  Eventually, siya rin nag-clutchbag.

These days, clutchbags are often associated with guns.  Pag may makita kang lalakeng may clutchbag, malamang baril ang laman noon.  Come to think of it, I haven't seen a clutchbag in ages.

Hehe. Pag luma na natutuklap yung fake leather exposing some suede-like material underneath. Forerunner of the beltbag.

Goons nowadays don't bother hiding their guns. Suksok lang sa baywang sakay takip ng loose na polo.

  11. Speaking of holduppan in Cubao, there used to be a notorious place for such incidents.  That was Quezon arcade, particularly the dim passageway leading from Aurora Boulevard to the Araneta Center.  Every time I went through there, I walked as swifty as I could.  I've never been held up in Cubao (knock on wood).  When I was still very young, however, I was propositioned by gays several times. "Are you game?"

I also remember how, during the days of PX goods, you could buy them from obscure stalls at the basement of Farmer's Market (now Plaza).  These products weren't usually available in supermarkets.  Products such as Hershey's, Pringles, Fanta Orange.  If you folks remember, imported food and drink products were not common during the 70s.  A lot of people went to Angeles or Olongapo just to get them.  But they were available at the basement of Farmer's, if you just looked around enough.

Oo nga, tatabihan ka sa sinehan, tapos tutulungan ka daw sa tuition.

Kalbong mataba na may clutchbag. Marami sa Ali Mall, pati sa mga game room.

Incidentally. my claim to fame sa Space Invaders : napaikot ko yung score

sa 1040, so since there were 5 digits, parang 101040 yung score ko nun.

I even remember the pattern for getting 300pts sa flying saucer, 22 times ka

    mag-fire, tapos 14 na ng 14.

  12. I know eveyone has heard it (and are probably sick of hearing it too), but Pidol's reply to the calls for him to run as a politician has got to be the most profoundly wise words I've ever heard: 'madali tumakbo, papano kung manalo?"

Speaking of Cubao, I haven't been there in like 20 years. Aside from the coliseum, is there any other structure that's still standing? Ali Mall and Farmer's I know. New Frontier? Nation Cinema? Ali Mall? Fiesta Carnival?

Batang Cubao din ako. Lagi kong dinadaanan on my way to school pag sumasakay

sa jeep. Best memories are the Orange Julius stand sa Rustan's which I would frequent

for their ham sandwiches. Steamed, no less.

Madalas na daw ang holduppan dyan. Had a colleague who was built like an ox,

didn't look loaded at all pero di pa rin pinatawad. Tinabihan daw ng tatlo,

sabay tutok ng icepick sa gilid. Luckily i was never held up nung madalas ako dyan.

Now i just go here to buy seafood at farmer's. A bit pricey but the sight of

heaping banyeras of prawns always makes me forget my budget.
