  1. very well said.

Really our problem lies in the fact that our inferiority complex shows up whenever a foreign coach shows up in our country.. It happened with Ron Jacobs or Tim Cone (early in his career) and it has happened with Toroman. You get to hear arguments like these coaches are taking the jobs of purebreed or local coaches when they don't bring new to the table. For Christ sakes! This was the very reason why our brand of play stagnated. When Ron Jacobs came in he brought a whole lot to the game even at PBA and the rest of the teams/coaches adjusted or adapted to it. This is what employing foreign coaches is all about, the transfer of technology or new learning's. Instead of absorbing what can be learned and adapting, these very people waste their time thinking that they don't need to learn anything new and pull everyone down (paging the likes of Yeng Guiao). Heck, SBP should have a consistent program for local coaches as well to train abroad for them to continuously learn and improve. In time this well bear fruit for there is no quick fix to a complicated problem. Now that were back in the semis after how many years I hope that we don't put that to waste and continue the program. If we don't retain Toroman's services then I sure hope we get someone better and also with a rich experience in the international scene.

  2. the last time i checked we never made it to the olympics or the qualifier, so i don't get what 'success' we are talking about. our goal is that and we didn't make it. meaning we failed. toroman and gilas failed. our goal is not doing better than our previous stint. its plain and simple the olympics. no ifs nor buts. and we failed. let's stop this "pat on the back" and "anyway good job guys" mentality. lets not be happy with consolation prizes. thats a surefire formula for mediocrity. lets be a little hard on ourselves and adopt a no compromise attitude in achieving our goals. all or nothing. thats how you accomplish things. anyway we will never stop supporting our national team even if they failed.

by the the way the coach who has "quotable quotes" and has basketball philosophy in handling his team (not merely sharing it to public or media) achieved his goal that timel. and thats success.

I don't think that you can gauge a coach's worth by the "quotable quotes" or basketball philosophy that he can share to the public (or media)... and also, you can never argue with "success"...

  3. remember rafa dinglasan of lasalle before. i see him now as a comedian in some tv commercials. but look at him before. and a vince hizon na palaban din. here watch this:

  4. TIME TO LET TOROMAN GO. he doesn't have a sound basketball TEAM philosophy. or i doubt if he has basketball philosophy at all. he is a situational coach. his style is forming a team around one good player (haddadi? douthit?). have you ever heard of quotable quotes from him. "the best offense is defense", "they were playing not to lose and not win!", etc. (you know from whom these lines came from). iran as a team never became good. they have strong players that dominate. look where they are now when they're dominant players were stopped.

as for who will be the best coach? i don't know also. norman black maybe. with a new team who will focus and enough time! not loaned out pba players who will be national players only on their spare time.

  5. filming of apocalypse took 3 years in the philippines because it was interrupted because the cast and crew suffered from malaria. accounts say its because of karma. the production bought all unclaimed bodies from funeral homes in laguna and hanged them to decorate the set of the camp of Col Kurtz (Marlon Brando). aside from the contract dispute between Brando and the director Coppolla. another account says that they rented all PAF choppers which are only few and they had to source out from private owners. in the morning they will paint it with USAF for the shooting and in the afternoon they will paint it back to AFP.

source: my tito who lives in laguna. he now stays at the set that the production built that eventually became a community.

"7. Apocalypse Now - This is a 1979 war movie by Francis Ford Coppola. It was shot in Baler, Quezon and Pagsanjan, Laguna. The filming and scouting of locations were done around 1974 up to 1977.

Cheap labor and the existing American military bases at that time are the primary reasons why the producer chose to film this in our country instead of Australia.

The actors are Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, Harrison Ford, Robert Duvall, Albert Hall, Frederic Forrest, Sam Buttons and Laurence Fishburne."

  6. i think we need to create a new team and wag umasa sa pba. northern consolidated and danding cojuanco did it with ron jacobs in tow. so why can't we do it now? they're a bunch of amateurs straight from college CAREFULLY SELECTED, TRAINED and COACHED WELL. i don't mind having a foreign coach if he has a very sound basketball philosophy to bring to the team like ron jacobs. toroman's only significant contribution is his selection of douthit but i had to admit its a very significant contribution. . and to think the ncc team didn't take long to jell as a team. 2 or 3 years lang (i think). pba players are not reliable because of their team's priorities. even if the players want to kung ayaw ng team nila they can't do anything. and besides it won't work kung they will be just on loan. its practically practicing with the national team on their free time (parang hobby lang).

  7. true enough pangilinan is not a coach. bad assesment.i think its our point guards (casio and alapag) and their speed along with douthit who carried us through. daghles height never became an advantage as a point guard for jordan. sun yue is, but its not because of his height but because he is really talented. alapag made us look like a cohesive team kahit last minute naform yung final line-up of our team. sounds like a broken record but reliable shooters are what we need. and a reliable reliever for douthit. possibly thoss or slaughter. i don't really understand why taulava is there. throughout the tournament he looked like fumbling giant. or a comic relief to douthit. we also need the likes of baguio or tubid (although i hope we can find somebody taller) in the number 2 position. genuine slashers. although i observed tiu despite his size did well. especially defensively he is really a surprise. I've never seen him as physical and as magulang than in this league. in the power forward position i think ranidel deocampo did well. though he didn't became an outside threat in the league, but i really think he is capably our shooter supposedly at the same time he has inside game. we need tall power forwards in the real sense of the word. POWER forward. i didn't really understand yung pag babad ke williams. i don't really know why, he is strong, fast, high leaper, but very unreliable. how many times have you seen him bungle a lay-up? and miss free throws. we also need reliable medium range players who are tall, like an art dela cruz. and lastly, the bias on fil-ams. i really believe baracael is a better player than lassiter. he just lost his confidence because he became a rarely used reliever to lassiter. lutz? i can't really see what he brings to the team. muscle and defense maybe, but leaves much to be desired.

and the coach? i agree with yeng guiao. toroman didn't bring anything new to the team. he's just well supported. far far far cry from ron jacobs who clearly has an evident contribution to the national team. bakit nag ba nobody is making a serious offer to jaworski to coach the national team? everybody questioned his selection then for the national team. particularly the inclusion of chit loyzaga and dante gonzalgo but come playtime we clearly see that he had a plan for the team. despite only 2 weeks preparation he got silver.

MVP not giving up on Olympic basketball dream

“I’m not a coach or a player but there are certain weaknesses that I saw in this tournament that we have to seriously look into,” said Pangilinan. “If you ask me, there should be changes with the players. It’s not a criticism on the players that we have now. They tried their best and I should thank them, especially those on the program for three years and those from the PBA who made the sacrifice.”

Team captain Chris Tiu, JV Casio, Mark Barroca, Mac Baracael, Japeth Aguilar, Dylan Ababou and Jason Ballesteros have been with Smart Gilas since the Olympic drive began late 2008.

“I think our point guards are small,” said Pangilinan. “Not to say that our point guards are not good, but I believe that we need bigger point guards.”

Jordan has the 6-foot-5 Osama Daghles while 6-3 Liu Wei and 6-7 Sun Yue, a former Los Angeles Laker, run the backcourt for China.

  8. nevertheless, congrats to the smart giles for the 4th place finish. but as jaworski once said there's no such thing as a 2nd, third or fourth place. its either you're a champion or a loser. we're willing to wait another 4 years right? for the country!!! go pilipinas!

  9. and i posted this too. sorry for bringing this back.

"so what happens to the 3 year investment? wala na? erase?

and the main goal is the olympic qualifier. how stupid.

or the marketing mileage of smart is over? regardless of the result for our country. smart made money all right. and we thought its all about the country!"

    KillTheDEVIL, on 28 August 2011 - 12:57 AM, said:

MVP, according to an article by Quinito Henson, is spending roughly 300 million for the Gilas to come into being. That's around the budget of a PBA team for 6 years. So let's continue supporting the efforts of Smart executives instead.

"300M is small for an advertising budget. small portion lang yan out of the billions na advertising budget smart for a year. i would love to support smart's effort. problem is the effort pala has nothing to do with the country but for the mileage of the brand. otherwise tuloy ang contract ng mga players that they invested on, to fulfill the main goal which is the olympic qualifier next month. unless, narealize na hindi pala talaga magagaling yung nakuha nila sa national team so they opted to let them go, and look for new ones. and it took toroman 3 years to know if his players can or cannot. new coach na rin maybe?"

  10. that was originally the plan: to send a well prepared team. kaya nag smart matched the pba salary for the players to keep them. as i said before:

"what the stupid f#&k is that?!! their contract is a month short of their main goal which the olympic qualifier? and tanga naman! naman they have to start from scratch to play the qualifier a month from now? what foresight!!!"

and eventually we sent a ragtag last minute composed team with pba players (all from talk and text and not necessarily the best choice). i appreciate the support of smart and manny pangilinan but to some extent nauna yung negosyo. unlike danding before, national team first. then eventually pba and negosyo when they did well already in the international games. remember the all amateur squad of ncc reinforced by only 3 fil-ams/naturalized players? sad part in gilas, the cast who were there from the beginning and are very familiar with the system nabangko in lieu of fil-ams. well, hopefully not because they are homegrown.

it's true. we cannot just be sending ill-prepared basketball teams to international competitions. this smart-gilas team had a few years together and yet it still came out 2 wins short of its goal...almost but not quite. maybe if the core of this team will continue with the program and with the addition of new and younger players to take over asi and the other "senior citizens" we might just have a better shot next time. ang problema lang balik pba na naman tayo.

  11. another case of relying too much on fil-ams. didn't even gave this homegrowns a fighting chance. well, it was good while it lasted. pero may korea game pa! tsaka na tayo magsisihan. though its a more difficult route, pwede pa!

i'm curious whatever happened to aguilar and baracael?

  12. does anyone remember this? its a game between philippines and usa here in manila that turns into a rumble. it started with benjie paras but in the rumble it was patrimonio who even wrestled a player to the ground. the audience was also involved eventually.

  13. whats so frustrating is we know for a fact na kaya natin. talaga lang we were caught on a bad day.

well, ganun talaga... may nananalo at may natatalo... deserve din naman ng JORDAN makapasok sa finals dahil mahirap ang pinagdaanan nila. beating previous undefeated IRAN team in the quarters, then tinalo nila ang PILIPINAS na tumalo sa kanila noong 2nd round. i wish them luck against CHINA nalang.

and to think in the start, jordan is also having a bad game. ours happen to be worse.
