  1. I guess we have different views. You seem to be implying that any coach could have piloted us to a FIBA World appearance since we have good players. Like I said, I also blamed Chot for this Asiad debacle but he should be given more time. You have to consider that we had Blatche in the Worlds and, in my opinion, he is an upgrade compared to Douthit. Blatche was a major reason why we had close games against elite competition and had he been allowed to play in the Asiad, we surely would have won, at least, a bronze medal. We can blame Chot all we want. In the end, it will still be MVP and the SBP braintrust that will decide Chot's fate as the Gilas coach.

i guess so. no I'm not implying that any coach could pilot us to fibs world. in fact I'm saying it should be a good coach. then we should have went past the top 16 in the fiba world and so on. yes definitely blatche is an upgrade. but if really look at all the games we are always competitive. with blatche in foul trouble and in the bench we're still competitive and even pulling out every time blatche is on the bench. with douthit benched we're still competitive. in short we can win the without in asia without blatche. or even without douthit. yes it depends on the mvp who will coach. the best coaches here (tim cone, yeng guiao, jaworski) said no already. so good luck to us. we are one. we want to win. competitive is not enough.

  2. Jaworski played with "puso" and coached with "utak". Yes, I remember that game against North Korea. This is just my opinion but if that 1990 team was given ample time to practice and warm up with other international teams, I believe we would have beaten China in the 1990 Asiad.

Just like you, I wanted Chot to be replaced, at first, but I realized that Chot has been with Gilas ever since the time of Toroman and taking Chot out would disrupt the continuity of the Gilas program. Now, if Chot fails to bring us to the Olympics, then maybe that would be time for him to step down and let one of his assistant coaches or consultants take over. We should give Chot time. After all, he piloted us to a FIBA World appearance.

i understand you're sympathy for chot, but if you really look at it, a lot are also there ever since. uichico, black etc. and theres no continuity to disrupt because chot is only reliant on good players. he was never known for any coaching principle. the same way ron jacobs was known for 'defence is the best offence', etc. or really, maybe I'm just talking as a fan who won't wait for another heartbreak until he steps down. i can't wait for the next competition. simply because I'm sure we can win given the right coaching.

btw, he never piloted us to the fibs world appearance. he just happened to be there. we simply had good players nothing more

  3. The puso battlecry was meant to show us filipinos how we won vs korea here in manila...kasi pag laging puso lang ng puso naiisip ko na parang dinadaan nlang natin sa puso natin eh parang walang skills ang players natin...even chot said it in an interview regarding pingris...parang minaliit pa nya..alam kong pang motivate yun meaning nya..pero pangit ang pagkadeliver nya eh...ayun nalaman tuloy ng ibang teams sa FIBA world ang kakayahan ni ping..endpoint nde na masyadong makagulat si mark after ng greece...nde marunong mag pmaximize ng player talents si chot...kaya makikita mo ilan lang ang ginagamit nya...samantalang talented lahat ng palyers natiin...

@ sir mason...anong saying yun? You cant teach old dogs new tricks...sadly it pertains to coach too...i think yun talaga ang weakness nya eh nde sya magaling magadjust...tulad ni jawo...nde sya magaling sa mga sciences and technical aspects ng coaching...pero magaling naman syang magadjust given any situation...parang i would rather have a coach na magaling magadjust nlang....also the gilas program can continue naman even with a diff coach...parang mas maganda ata ganun...at least madaming plays ang malalaman ng mga players eh ...nde lang puro dribble drive plays...and of course para matuto mga bigs natin...mababano lang sila kay chot...even sa TnT days ni coach...nde yan mahilig gumawa ng low post plays sa mga bigs nya...come to think of it...ala din ata syang bigs nun...other than RDO...so for me...out na si coach talaga...baka mahawa pa sa mga new players na makukuha ng gilas...e.g. Kobe paras, alas mas lalo na si gregzilla...

this is so true. chot reyes has been invited to several talks and I've attended some of them. the highlight of his talk is how and why he chose pingris despite the fact that he has no talent. yes he broadcasts to everybody that pingris is so untalented but he has the drive thats why he is in the team. same thing when he broadcasted to everyone that douthit is to blame for their lose. thats so unbecoming of someone who's suppose to motivate. he makes himself look good at the expense of his players during talks or interviews.

  4. Yes, Jawo is one of the better PBA tacticians. One Jawo coaching move that will be forever etched in my memory was putting Chito on Fernandez in the 1988 All- Filipino finals. In that series. Purefoods had a plethora of talent in Alvin, Jolas, Codinera plus a legend in Fernadez. On paper, Ginebra was outgunned. One of Purefoods' strengths was Fernandez on the low post. Fernandez was a great passer and one of the best low-post guys so he could beat you via scoring in the post or passing to cutters or to three-point shooters. Chito neutralized Fernandez who was eventually benched in that series. Let's not forget that Jawo piloted a team that barely had two weeks to train to the silver medal in the 1990 Asiad.

This is just my take. We should give Chot time. As of this point, Chot is the only head coach to be exposed to various national teams so he pretty much has an idea what to do next time. As fans, we have to take the bitter with the sweet.

agree. jaworski is very situational tactician. a lot critisized him for including chito loyzaga and dante gonzalgo in that national team but loyzaga played a key role in pushing out the tall players of our opponent outside the paint. the match up between loyzaga and the north korean giant (7'5" or 7'6") was a classic. remember loyzaga being interviewed with a lot of black and blues on his face. he was laughing while he was narrating that he only stands up to the elbow of his opponent thats why he keeps on elbowing his face. and he wanted so badly to get even for coach jawo because the korean giant shoved jaworski when he stood beside him side by side to gauge his height. anyway, jaworski balances not just talents of the players but also the roles that they had to play in the team.

disagree. chot had more than enough time to do his stuff and do it well. and as a fan, don't play with my "puso" while he is learning his craft. study coaching somewhere and not in our national team while we are watching and hoping our team will win. because I'm pretty sure our team can win if we have a coach who knows his stuff and not just learning.

  5. Yes i do agree na maraming magandang bagay na naipakita ni coach chot...especially yun naibalik nya tayo sa world stage...(altho maraming factors that comes into play kung bakit nasama tayo)... Kaso nun nasa fiba world na tayo..nakita natin yun problema eh...but we attributed that to inexperience kuno...nandun na mga signs...oks lang if two games...kaso halos ilan games yun ganun...then malaking coaching mistakes dun sa game with barrea...pampalubag loob na yun nanalo tayo sa senegal...

Tapos sa Asian games...muntik na tayo sa india...nangyari ulit with iran buti nlang no bearing....kaso did he learned his lesson? Then came yun game with Qatar...small ball parin?? 50-50 ako sa game with korea...since we showed na kaya natin to play without douhit or blatche...but 16 point lead cut down without calling timeout? And of course as you might expect...14 point lead against kazakhs with us needing to win by 11? alam nyo naman kung anong nangyari di ba?

Buti nga dito sa MTC professional tayo or rather educated tayo magcomment sa gilas....if you read yun ibang social media...nde mo alam kung maawa ka or matutuwa ka sa pinagsasabi nila kay coach chot reyes....

of course we all know that the 'inexperience' excuse is a lot of bull. thats exactly what the program is all about. aside from jelling together, its exposing them to international brand of basketball. thats where the bulk of their budget wen to. travelling around and playing with foreign teams to familiarize with international basketball.

if theres one thing that we have proven in this entire experience is that our player are very capable of beating world class teams if we put our hearts into it. we just a better coach and guidance. we all saw that our players almost defeated most of the teams but the coach lost it for us.

  6. Jaworski? ewan ko lang kung gaano pa ka-updated si Jawo sa Asian basketball. Chot didn't have plays for his big men, sana man lang pinagsabay nya yung twin towers or triple towers, para lang magulat yung kalaban sa biglang laki ng Gilas kahit sa 4th quarter man lang. Pang-gulat ba. hindi yung puro na lang guards ang asa loob.

jaworski? maybe. he is a situational coach so i think he can adapt to any brand of play. he is so good at training big men and devising plays when needed. what he lacks is basketball science but i think the battery of assistant coaches can provide for that. he, too, is a good candidate.

  7. Gilas team is not a perfect team. Chot Reyes is not a perfect coach. But these bunch of imperfect coach and players made it to the world stage. Replacing anyone in the Gilas system will not help but will create another confusion.

Ano magsisimula na naman tayo? Tim Cone? He had his chance with the 1998 Centennial Team. Triangle Offense? How long will it take for the players to learn this? Will their mother club have the patience to let their multi-millionaire players stay and dedicate most of their time with Gilas?

Yes Gilas lost dramatically in the Asian Games. But maybe they're just a tired team afterall. I am disappointed just like every other Filipino. But I am not in favor of replacing anyone in that team.

    Opinion lang.

chot reyes is not an imperfect coach. he is a stupid coach. he has great materials (players) and a good program at his disposal but he can't pull it off. end game is execution if there is something to execute but chot reyes doesn't have anything. he just relies on his good players and 'puso'.

back then tim cone never had the same support as chot reyes has now. and he is merely doing it on the side then. he is a good candidate. and replacing chot doesn't mean starting all over again. these are the same players playing the same game in the pba. everybody is familiar with everyone and their system of play. somebody just has to put some order into it.

  8. here's my thoughts:

    must retain:

l.a. tenorio - very heady point guard

jimmy alapag - i think he still has it despite his age

r deocampo - has power and can shoot 3

mark pingris - we need an enforcer with a decent touch. and he has the heart

japeth aguilar - very athletic for his height. must practice his perimeter shooting though

junmar fajardo - we need his height and heft. must improve his perimeter also

jeff chan - our most consistent shooter

gebe norwood - for his height he can play any position

    questionable

gary david - very inconsistent. in short tournaments consistency is key

larry fonacier - a good shooter but lacking in defense. and he cant find his own shot. we have other shooters

jason castro - only because of his height. we're forced to play him as a point guard which he is not. his penetrations wont work against taller opponents in the world

marcus douthit - only because we need a taller and heftier naturalized and we're only allowed one.

    who's yours?

  9. i think tenorio is a vital cog in the team. very intelligent point guard and can match up on defense even with at the most 6'4" point guards. i wonder what will happen to jimmy alapag. he will be 36 next year. i think he still has it.

  10. our main problem is castro's role in the rotation. he's one of the best slashers kaso he's not a good point guard. if he's playing we need another point guard (thats why in the pba the combination of castro and alapag works), which means we have 2 small guys in the team. big height disadvantage naman ang problem.

and also we need to learn how to pace marcus. laging kapos sa endgame.

gary david is not the problem. he's just playing token minutes.

  11. ginebra started playing as team when that f#&king feeling superstar caguia was injured

then he insisted he play again, nasira yung rotation.

then he insisted he play again, nasira yung rotation.

  12. slaughter has a decent 3 pt shooting. its his inside game thats questionable in international competitions. malambot. fajardo? not sure.

teaching greg slaughter and junemar fajardo how to make 3 point shots with at least 50% accuracy would allow douthit to have better inside game.

  13. it was mvp who did not want to continue his gilas program and toromans service. toroman was insisting on an all amateur squad. mvp put his foot down and insisted pro-players be accomodated. until it led to toroman being fired.

my solution: change chot reyes. and yes go out and look for grassroot players. so many untapped. there are more fajardos that we can train. go to provinces instead of scouting in the high profile uaap and paying big money for fil-foreigners commitment. the fil-foreigners and foreign coaches are mere paid mercenaries (case in point are the younghusbands. money first before being filipino). try to convince jaworski to coach the national team. bo perasol is a good alternative. even the most hated yeng guiao (as long as he will commit and focus)

that is precisely my point. in our country when a new coach or boss comes in everything changes. why can't we institutionalize a system so that anyone who comes in we'll adapt and implement it?

gilas 1 with outstanding amateurs then didn't perform far from how gilas 2 made us proud now, both produced a lot of frustration also. by not continuing the program of toroman everything mvp invested went to waste except for the naturalization of douthit. with gilas 2 we went back to how we were competing in international games before for the last 30 years by picking top pba players, asking them to play amateur rules then send them to compete in qualifiers for the olympics or world championship and if they fail we turn around and look for somebody to blame.

my solution: chot reyes should look for more ganuelas, i mean fil-foreigners who are good, strong and athletic players standing at 6'8" and another 6'11" then include them in a pool that will be exposed to middle eastern, european and u.s. tournaments and train them whole year until the 2013 fiba championship in lebanon.
