Mark Caguioa hopeful he has more championships left in him as Ginebra enters new era

MARK Caguioa is setting modest goals as Barangay Ginebra begins another chapter under new coach Frankie Lim.

The former league MVP admitted all he’s aiming for with the Kings right now is to make it to the semifinals of the season-ending PBA Governors Cup and then take it from there.

Eh sana these guys (younger Ginebra players) can bring us to the semis lang. That’s all I’m asking. I’m not even asking to be in the finals, but just step by step,” Caguioa bared to Spin.ph shortly after a rigorous practice under Lim at the CCF gym in Ortigas.

The league’s most popular ballclub failed to make the semis for the fourth straight conference after being bundled out by Rain or Shine in the quarterfinals of the ongoing Commissioner’s Cup.

Ginebra had not won a championship since winning the 2008 Fiesta Conference, with Caguioa and backcourt partner Jayjay Helterbrand the last remnants of that title squad.

No wonder Caguioa could’t help but be envious of fellow superstar James Yap, who has achieved a lot over the last five years with Purefoods.

“With my career, like yung sila James, James is winning (championships). Ako, I’m still here, pero the difference is, I’m not winning,” Caguioa admitted.

“Sina Gary David, they make it to the semis. Eh siyempre nakakainggit yung mga ganun.”

Over the last five seasons, Yap has won a total of six championships with Purefoods, including a rare grand slam last season as the Hotshots became just the fourth team to achieve the feat in the league’s 40-year history.

But Caguioa is keeping his fingers crossed the Kings fortunes will change for the better under Lim, who he described as ‘strict’ and someone who will yell at a player in practice if needed.

“With coach Frankie, he’s strict. The thing is, with coach Frankie, he breaks down every detail na dapat mong gawin sa practice, so we don’t make the same mistake (during games),” explained the ‘Spark.’

“Ang nangyayari sa amin (before), we keep making the same mistakes. Now we have new guys, and we need someone na sisigawan ka. Kailangan namin na sisigawan ka.”

With Lim in charge, Caguioa said the only concern now is to get into game shape because the Kings are expected to run a lot while also maximizing the presence of youthful big men Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar.

    sorry guys, OT.

  3.

You are very right!

  4.

Who's this Scottie Thompson? san ba ito naglaro parang ngayon ko lang narinig ang pangalan niya...

here is an article about scottie thompson's heroics in the D league

Scottie Thompson defensive gems help Hapee nip Cagayan Valley in OT and claim D-League title on first try

    Read more at: http://www.spin.ph/basketball/news/happee-champion-aspirants-cup-scottie-thompson-pba-d-leagu

SCOTTIE Thompson intercepted a pass from Moala Tautuaa with 19 seconds left to lift Hapee to a 93-91 win over Cagayan Valley on Thursday in a thrilling finish to the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup finals at the packed Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig. With the Fresh Fighters trailing 90-91, Tautuaa’s pass went right into the hands of Thompson, who scored on a lay-up. In the ensuing play, Thompson had another defensive gem, intercepting the ball once again leading to Baser Amer splitting two free throws. To cap his endgame brilliance, the University of Perpetual Help standout swatted Don Trollano’s three-point attempt in the final seconds as Hapee completed a sweep of the best-of-three title series. Hapee clinched its first victory in the PBA D-League in only its first conference, sweeping the Rising Suns, who topped the elimination round with an 11-0 win-loss slate. Garvo Lanete had 22 points for Hapee, while Troy Rosario added 20 points and 13 rebounds before suffering an ankle injury in overtime. Ola Adeogun finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds. But the hero of Game Two was Thompson, who scored 11 points, the final two markers off a Tautuaa turnover before coming through in the clutch. “Ang bilis nang pangyayari,” said a still stunned Hapee coach Ronnie Magsanoc when he spoke to the media. “Pagtingin ko, lamang na kami.” “Scottie saved the day for us. Ganun ka-simple. Unbelievable effort by Scottie,” said Magsanoc. Hapee completed the sweep without Aspirants Cup MVP Bobby Ray Parks, who went down with a dislocated right shoulder in the first possession of the first quarter and never returned. Tautuaa, the first overall pick in the D-League draft last year, couldn’t propel the Rising Suns to the D-League crown following several blunders in the endgame. The Fil-Tongan missed two free throws with the score tied at 81 with 37.8 seconds left in regulation. Tautuaa also had a chance to give the lead back to Cagayan Valley with 10 seconds remaining in the fourth but only split his two free throws. Then in overtime with Cagayan up by one, Tautuaa threw a bad pass right into the hands of Thompson that led to the marginal basket. Abel Galliguez had 18 points, 15 in the second half to keep the game close for the Rising Suns after trailing by as many as 11 in the third. Trollano added 17 points, while Jason Melano and Tautuaa each had 13.

  5.

For GSM fans surely we welcome this trade scenario ...Lanete and Rosario are two of my top picks for GSM. Troy could be a stretch 4 or probably be converted into a 3 na mahina tayo. Lanete offhand will be a duplication given we are loaded on the position he plays but is a welcome addition given that he is familiar with CFL's system.

We really need to unload ... However, IMHO medyo one sided ata ito for GSM. Who would want an Urbiztondo or an Eman for the chance to pick Lanete? I think it will take a Baracael or an Ellis (plus maybe a throw-in) for someone to give up a pick that will land between 3-5 in the coming draft.

But maybe these guys you mentioned will be interesting for those with mid to late picks and we can instead look at guys like Chris Newsome, Scottie Thompson, Baser Amer, Roi Sumang, Glen Khobuntin and Almond Vosotros among others.

sabagay tama ka nga dre, kulang ung monfort or urbiztondo lang for lanete.

another draft steal i think that BGSM would want to take if lanete becomes drafted earlier is Thompson, he is not just a scorer but a very good defender, example is yung game winning series clinching steal niya nung D league finals vs. Tautua's Cagayan team. Yun nga lang, another sekyu position.

  6. ang pag angat kasi uli ng ginebra ang magpapaangat uli sa pba. kaya for the sake of philippine basketball eh lumugar yung mga dapat lumugar.mark and jj we thank you for your contribution but in order for ginebra to move forward the both of you should retire and help the team in another capacity other than that of a player.

    - makes sense considering his future as a father and a normal citizen after his basketball life.

  7. i guess f lim is building a team around japeth and greg... if that is the case he should keep yeo, baracael and LA.... no one will take helterbrand kasi mag reretire yan sa tingin ko pag na trade... sino ang magtitimon pay na trade si la at yeo? rookies? i do not think so... kanino i trade si LA? sino ang kasing calibre nya na willing mag part ways sa team? it is not easy to find a pg with LA's talent and it is harder to find a team willing to part ways with that player...

baracael? yes tradable pero kanino? sa draft pick again? pag isipan nila maige... baka panay rookie at sophomore tayo next year?

i remember yung pure foods 1988... panay super rookies yun plus fernandez, israel and 2 veterans yata, pero it took them 2 years bago mag champion....

balance is essential...respeto sa beterano and direction is very important too...

    I think these are the ones that should be traded for a draft pick (at least one of them);

    > Urbiztondo or Monfort for Lanete pick - this is an upgrade on youth and PG skills position (Lanete is a gilas cadet so he knows defense and is a very deadly 3pt shooter)

    > Pena + their 2nd round pick for a 1st round pick (kung may kukuha na ibang team)

    > Baracel or Ellis for a Troy Rosario pick

I dont want to see JJ on another jersey, i just want him to retire - much respect

I fully support and agree on building the team core on Greg, Japhet and LA - they are the building blocks of this teams future.

as for MC47, mag twitter ka na lang.. hehehe

  8. MC47 on a twitter hater

Social Media Scoop: Mark Caguioa of the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is no stranger to the attacks of the haters online. He recently got into a heated conversation with one of them on social media. Check it out below.

Malamang FilForeigner. "We have been practicing this f##k....................

this is what weve all been waiting for. dun sa mga fans na nag ka clamor na si yeng guiao na lang sa Brgy. well you got not yeng BUT with similar trait and decisiveness like him. Yari talaga ngayon ang mga pa diva. This is really good for Japhet and Greg, mas titigas yung 2 (Sana).

    FLASHBACK BACK BACK BACK.........................

Mark Caguioa leads embrace of Jeffrey Cariaso’s new triangle offense at Ginebra

With Jeffrey Cariaso taking over as coach of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, he has installed the triangle offense, the vaunted system he learned under his mentor Tim Cone at San Mig Coffee.

While the system is notoriously hard to teach, Cariaso has found the Gin Kings welcoming the triangle with open arms, with no less than Ginebra heart and soul Mark Caguioa leading the way.

“We’ve been running the triangle for three weeks. Everyone needs to buy in to the system. You’ve got to be in there,” Caguioa told InterAksyon.com.

Even though Cariaso admitted that the team was still struggling to execute the new system, Ginebra displayed balanced production in its 89-71 win over GlobalPort. Import Zaccheus Mason scored 21 points, Greg Slaughter added 19, while Caguioa chipped in 15.

Despite his reputation for being a one-on-one player, Caguioa noted that the new equal opportunity system would make life easier for him.

“It’s a team offense. Hindi yung katulad dati minsan mayroon kaming tendencies na magkanya-kanya. This time, it’s a lot easier and everyone’s getting their shots,” said Caguioa.

“Itong sistema na ito, the ball will find you instead of you looking for the ball every time. Just run the offense.”

Slaughter, who Cariaso described as the perfect center for the offense, acknowledged that the system is already giving everyone better opportunities.

“The spacing and the equal opportunity for everyone. We’re a talented team. This system will bring out the best in everyone of us,” said Slaughter.

The 7-foot rookie expects the Gin Kings to improve at it as they become more familiar with the new system.

“This is my first time, we’ve only got into it two or three weeks,” he said. “As time goes on, we’ll be better and better.”

  10. Well ganito din ang mga sinabi nilang dalawa ni JJ about Cariaso during their first practices.

Mark Caguioa says 'disciplinarian' Frankie Lim exactly what doctor ordered for Ginebra

AS Barangay Ginebra enters a new era under known disciplinarian Frankie Lim, superstar Mark Caguioa said it's exactly what the doctor ordered for the struggling team.

Contrary to what some fans feel that Caguioa is against anything that threatens his leadership in the team, the former league MVP stressed that it’s about time the Kings begin to look up to a coach who puts premium on discipline.

“I think coach Frankie is very strict and I think he can bring out the best in all of us,” Caguioa told Spin.ph on Monday at the end of Ginebra's first practice under Lim at the CCF Gym along Ortigas.

“He’s super strict, so let’s see what happens to this team. Now, I do think it’s about time we have a coach who is strict,” he said.

[see Lim puts premium on teamwork, ball movement as he lays ground work for Ginebra reign]

Caguioa immediately praised how the multit-titled coach of the San Beda Red Lions put the players through their paces in his first day at the office, making them do different drills and other stamina-building exercises.

He also welcomed Lim's attention to detail.

“First day pa lang ng practice, I can already see what will happen in the game, dahil he tells you every detail,” said Caguioa, who like all of Ginebra's players, was mandated to do weight training right after practice.

“I am glad that he is strict like him,” added the 35-year-old guard.

Caguioa stressed Ginebra, which is coming off a quarterfinal exit from the Commissioner's Cup, tends to relax during games due to the lack of somebody tough on the bench to make them toe the line.

He is a very strict, I know. For this team, that’s what we need. This team tends not to do the things we do in practice. Like I said before, ang galing namin sa practice, pero pagdating sa game, kanya-kanya na,” he said.

“First day pa lang sinisigawan na niya kami, sinisigawan niya ang mga beterano, all the way down to the rookies. That’s why you have a respect for the guy,” said the many-time All-Star.

The outspoken Ginebra star was also very vocal in saying that he’ll take whatever role Lim will give him.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to win. I don’t have to play with a lot of minutes, if I could help, then I would. I have no problem with a strict coach,” he said.

[see Ginebra trades Billy Mamaril for Barako's Dave Marcelo]

Asked if he is ready to receive some tongue-lashing from a fiery mentor like Lim, Caguioa said there’s no problem.

“That’s nothing. That’s part of (your job as a player). If ayaw mo masigawan, your ego will kick in. Mali 'yun. Madaming players that came from the bottom, na lagi ring nasisigawan, what happens to you then, you get better,” Caguioa said.

“Everyday should be a learning process, maski beterano ka na. Mapagalitan ka ng coach mo, masigawan ka, walang problema, learn from it,” he said.

Caguioa and Lim also go back a long way, even before he was picked third overall by Barangay Ginebra in the 2001 rookie draft.

Lim, then team manager of Mobiline (now Talk 'N Text), was supposed to draft Caguioa at No. 4 but was beaten to the draw by Ginebra which picked the US-based player behind Willie Miller (Red Bull) and Mike Hrabak (Shell).

Dati pa kami magkakilala kasi siya talaga kumukuha sa akin noong 2001,” said Caguioa as he shared the story to Lim's nine-year-old son Tyler.

Lim, meanwhile, said he is happy with how Caguioa is embracing the system he is introducing.

“I am happy that the players are excited. It’s a work in progress, but together we can achieve our goal. My first target is to impose discipline, then we’ll focus on winning games,” said Lim.

As for Caguioa, Lim has one simple line: “Mark will enjoy playing here.

  11. This is Good News:

"Lim, who replaced Ato Agustin after Ginebra's exit at the quarterfinal stage of the Commissioner's Cup, was joined by assistant coaches Olsen Racela and Freddie Abuda as well as conditioning coach Kirk Collier.

As Spin.ph reported earlier, Agustin and another former assistant George Gallent were no longer around. Team insiders said they are likely bound for Ginebra sister team San Miguel Beer."

  13. another scorer na asian import? oo nga he is a SF type of player pero ang weakness ng team is SF DEFENSE NOT OFFENSE.

How will he guard JDV, Abueva, Hodge, Anthony, Norwood and the rest of the imports na SF din ang position?? Baracael to the rescue???

anyways, its Chua's choice, remember he is the manager NOT Frankie Lim so he has the main hand in choosing reinforcements. Again, on the actual game, si Lim pa din naman ang mag dedecide kung palalaruin niya ng matagal sa loob to o hindi at kung kaya niya kontrahin si Chua,

Now about MC47 as being called "diva", i think this is due to the "unnecessary" statements and tirades he mentioned at the past and until now and how he treats his team mates way below his stature. Even one of the great old Ginebra players criticized his statements and lack of leadership when the team is having its lowest points. No disrespect to his contributions to the team, but today is a different story, era and situation. Just like Jaworski days, things come and go and come to an end, and i think its time for MC47 and JJ's era to go there.

  14. Drummer, Guitarist and composer here.

Have a band from Elementary to College Days, but now a fully devoted father.

    Musical Influences ranges from:

    > the Beatles

    > 90's rock (LA 105.9, NU 107.5, Grunge, Metal, pinoy rock)

    > New age punk (Mxpx, NFG, and other related genre)

    > Indie (Foreign and Local)

    > Others that picks my interest like Benfolds, Mae and DLD of course

  15. and so they have spoken:

Asked if he wants to see Ginebra regret not playing him enough, Forrester said he harbors no bad feelings against the team.

"No, nothing against Ginebra. No animosity. Nothing I want them to regret. It's a mutual agreement, I think both parties benefited from the trade," he said.

"I hope some fans will continue supporting and cheering for me at Barako. I've been receiving a lot of sorry tweets from fans. But that's how professional basketball life goes. It's business," he said.

Banal, meanwhile, bared he has already grand plans for his former high-scoring guard in the NCAA.

"May plano na ko kay James. He's a welcome addition to us. Experienced na 'yan sa system," said Banal, adding Forrester can be an outside threat and a defensive lynchpin for his new team.

"Skills wise, he is a two guard who can shoot and drive. He can jump out of the building. Finally, Barako has an electrifying player. He'll definitiely give a new dimension to our offense," he said.

Ababou, who was originally picked by Barako in 2011, also welcomed the move.

"Maganda na rin na nalipat kami kasi magkaka-playing time na kami. Yung rhythm kasi makukuha mo 'yan pag naglalaro ka," said the former UST and Gilas Pilipinas mainstay.

"Atleast dito sa Barako, mas may chance kami lumaro. Sobrang sikip na ng guard spot sa Ginebra."

  16. I'm happy for Ababou and Forrester.

    i second the motion.

win - win situation for both and if this is Lim's idea, bilib na agad ako sa kanya.

They dont use them and these 2 have potential so give them to a team na mas magagamit tulad ng ginawa ng Alaska ke Espinas.

On the other hand, great decision to not ask for another player but to get a draftee para mapunuan ang very weak SF slot nila plus wala ka pang chemistry na masisira.

I agree, Troy Rosario is the best Big Man available in the draft. WAAAYYYY better than TORRES and AVO na overhyped. Imagine if they put Troy in the SF spot, Triple tower na sila na kaya pa din tumakbo along with Japeth and Greg. Its an Arwind Santos upgrade.

But 4th pick tayo so meaning, baka maunahan tayo ng ibang teams so kelangan may Plan B.

Go Forrester, prove to Ato and Chua na sila ay totoong bopols sa hindi paggamit sayo ;)

  17. trade rumor la at pringle: lugi ang ginebra sa tingin ko.... una, pringle is not a pg... who would start or run the team sa court? Monfort?Urbiztondo? jj? to me all 3 are just relievers and might not be able to play major minutes.. kailangan ng isang pg na marunong mag set up... in pringle, they might gain a more potent scorer but a lesser play marker which they need... and kung diva lang, pringle is more of a diva, remember demanding a USD 20,000 salary? to me he is not a go to guy and a future headache... injured daw eh si la iron man na....

trading ellis? pwede kung si hodge or si dilinger or si anthony... pero di ba sabi ni non, ellis is not tradable? why not mold him as a defensive stopper...

si pena i trade nila kahit sa guard hehehehe or i retire na nila... pambihira.... we are lacking a reliable back up after billy... sayang si brondial

i know hindi pa proven si f lim and rival sya ni jawo dati, pero i admire his grit and tapang... pero something in me is saying baka sya na....

agree... i really dont know why many people want to remove LA from the team. Nung huling nag finals, walang MC47 at injured si JJ wala pang slaughter and only LA is running the show (Candidate for BPC and MVP that year), double double sya lagi in points and assists.

Pringle is unproven, inconsistent, no leadership yet and soft, di bat ang hinahanap natin ay toughness? LA is more tough, like previously stated, he is an ironman, kahit injured nag lalaro.

regarding ellis, i trade man or hindi, he has yet to show his TRUE potential i think.. Kung ma trade man, better get someone from the pick na lang or a defensive player instead of another scorer.

  18. fresh from the oven.....la tenorio traded to globalport in exchange for stanley pringle. chris ellis to meralco,no word yet kung sino ang kapalit.

NOT YET CONFIRMED.. THIS IS ONLY RUMOR

Rumors abound: Barangay Ginebra to trade LA Tenorio for rookie Stanley Pringle

The Gin Kings are definitely not wasting any time. Just three days after bowing out of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup with a 92-91 loss to Rain or Shine, talks about shuffles and trades in staff and players abound.

According to a report by Musong R. Castillo on Inquirer.net, Barangay Ginebra is replacing coach Ato Agustin with assistant Frankie Lim.

This will be Lim’s first head coaching job in the PBA, the report notes.

“But what’s stunning are trade rumors that, according to a reliable source, could involve national team point guard LA Tenorio,” the report says.

It continues: “The Inquirer source said that management is working on a deal that would send Tenorio to Globalport in exchange for rookie Stanley Pringle, and another that would ship Chris Ellis to Meralco for a yet-to-be-determined player.”
