1. If 29 frogs catch 29 flies in 29 minutes, how many frogs are required to catch 87 flies in 87 minutes?

 

 

2. A woman has 43 pairs of stockings in her drawer: 21 blue, 8 black, and 14 striped. There was a brownout and she cannot see into the drawer. How many stockings must she take out to make certain that she has a pair of each?

 

 

3. A census-taker calls at a house. He asks the woman living there the ages of her three daughters. The woman says, " If you multiply their ages the total is 72. If you add together their ages the sum is the same as the number on my front door which you can see."

The census-taker says,"That is not enough information for me to calculate their ages." The woman replies."Well, my eldest daughter has a cat with a wooden leg."

The census-taker says," Thanks. Now I know their ages."

 

What is the number on the woman's front door. What are the ages of the three daughters?

2. 36 pairs - assuming the stockings are rolled or stored in pairs.

3. 15. 2,4,9. - did I get it right?

#3 has several solutions pala.

 

Pwedeng:

3,4,6 totaling 13

3,3,8 totaling 14

2,6,6 totaling 14

2,4,9 totaling 15

 

Since the eldest has a cat, that probably means that she doesn't have a twin, so 2,6,6 is out. I can't get the significance of the wooden leg. Does it have anything to do with 9 lives, less one since it lost a leg?

He says:

 

Assume a = b

 

1. multiply the equation by b

 

ab = bb

 

2. subtract aa from equation

 

ab - aa = bb - aa

 

3. factor difference of squares

 

ab - aa = (b-a)(b+a)

 

4. factor left handside

 

a(b-a) = (b-a)(b+a)

 

5. divide by common factor (b-a)

 

a = b+a

 

6. substitute a for b (following assumption that a =

 

a = a + a

 

7. simplify

 

a = 2a

 

8. divide by common factor( a )

 

1 = 2

 

 

"That was neat, but you did an illegal operation," said the great grand daughter of Da Vinci.

5. divide the the common factor (b-a)

 

if a=b ( assumption no. 1) then b-a=0, therefore you cant divide any number by ZERO.
