SINGAPORE - January 21-24, 1992

My first of two trips to Singapore and my first trip overseas. Left Manila at 6:00 am with my colleagues. My first glimpse of Singapore outside the PAL plane window reminded me of the picturesque images found only on hallmark cards. Tropical pine trees queue up the runway of the Changi airport. Rows of violet orchids decorated the hallways of the airport. I was already in a state of astonishment upon seeing the airport’s high-tech facilities and I was even more astonished upon seeing the lush greeneries of Singapore’s big metropolitan landscapes. We registered at the Apollo Hotel located at Havelock Road for our 4-days stay.

Dadagdagan ko na lang FR ni Pareng Anaheim regarding Singapore.

Changi is one of the most efficient and hassle free airports in the world. Passing thru Singapore immigration and customs is a breeze. Wag ka lang mahulihan ng drugs, firearms, etc. dahil seryoso sila - lethal injection katapat nyan!

Like Anaheim, Singapore was my first overseas trip. And I remember upon seeing Changi Airport for the first time, feeling both impressed and intimidated at the same time. The experience gave a sense of how the Philippines has been left so far behind our neighbors! :(

From Changi, you can take the City Shuttle bus (minivans actually) to the city and it will drop you off at your hotel doorstep for S$7. If there's 2 or 3 in your group, taking a taxi might also be worthwhile. Average cost would be around S$20 depending on where exactly your hotel is and what time of day you're arriving.

Places to visit: As mentioned by Anaheim, Sentosa Island tops the list of places to visit. Singapore Zoo is one of the best in the world. Night Safari is also the Singapore Zoo at night - magkaiba lang ang entrance. Visit Jurong Bird Park only if you have extra time or if you're into birds. Otherwise, there are better ways to spend your time. For photo ops, I always take my friends either to the City Hall or Boat Quay (fyi, "quay" is pronounced as "ki").

Eating places: A lot of tourists get talked into trying out the food stalls at Newton Circle for chili crab. Don't do this unless you have a local who's familiar with the place. That place is notorious for ripping off people. The best chili or pepper crabs I've tried were those in the restaurants along Boat Quay. My favorite indian food is at Andhra Curry in Little India (although Muthu's is more popular - too touristy and watered down in my opinion). For chicken rice, my favorites are Boon Tong Kee near Holland Village and Everyday Chicken Rice at the Maxwell Market. Go where the locals go! :)

Other places: Suntec City is a must-visit. Yung ang pinaka-Megamall nila. I always buy electronic items at Carrefour especially those "out of box" items that are sold at a discount. (Note: I try to avoid Sim Lim Tower. Few locals go there because some shops are notorious for items na "kinarne.) Almost all popular brands of clothing have shops at Suntec. I strongly recommend Nest Delights at the basement level when you get hungry. Value for money dimsum! ;)

"Fun" places: Orchard Tower is a notorious pick-up place but I don't go there. But I'll give you an address you should never forget: #20 Lorong 10 Geylang. The mamasan there will take care of you for S$150. There are also some MPs that are supposed to be ok. For details, check out this website sammyboy.com. Everything you need to know about Singapore's unsanitized side. Singapore's answer to MTC. :boo:

For Golfers: I've played in a number of course here. Sentosa, Singapore International CC, and Raffles are the best in my opinion. Most courses require a handicap card though so playing is not always easy to arrange unless you know somebody. There are also public courses like Executive and Green Fairways but they are crap compared to the public courses in Manila. Prepare to spend S$50-70 when playing the private courses and S$30 for the public. No caddies. Cart fees not included. BTW, for equipment, check out the shops at Far East Plaza along Orchard or Why Pay More at Suntec City.

Batam and Bintan Islands, Indonesia

and

Johor Bahru, Malaysia

I only went to these places to play golf. Besides that, I can't say I know these places well enough to make any recommendations on what to do or where to shop.

eto ang fr pareng yum yum. went once to the famous full moon party in koh samui. it is a resort island in the province of surathani, located south of bangkok about half a day by train and ferry. the whole beach is the scene of the wildest. longest party i have ever attended. after the sun sets, everyone is either drunk, high, or completely wasted. anything goes dito...you could be kissing the girl beside you before you even know it...someone could be passing you a joint... great place for hunting... went here with my girlfriend though kaya hanggang tingin lang ako...we just opted to find a distant shore far from the blaring music but close to the waters and, well...did our thing...heh, heh, it's great kasi wala kang pakialam sa iba...i saw some actually do it in public...when you wake up, daming tulog sa beach, many half-naked and completely unaware of what has happened...

The rains here reminded me about my Manila-Mindanao trip by bus back five years ago, which started while a storm was just beginning. Anyway, here’s a part of my travel diary.

Friday, November 12, 1999

6:40pm

Tonight, Manila will drown again. The canals will overflow and scatter their contents on the sidewalks and then the streets. This I imagine while weighing both the excitement and boredom of taking a trip to Davao. Not by plane or ship but by bus.

That I am not at all disheartened by the typhoon’s wrath is rather surprising since traffic would normally be at a standstill now. Taxis are scarce, although I finally find one.

But there’s hardly any traffic on the route that I took because it is a mere 36 minutes to the Philtranco terminal in Pasay from Espana in QC, something I could consider a minor miracle given this pouring downpour.

On the way, I recall on my left, on Osmena Avenue, vehicles of all types are seemingly frozen in their tracks. Those that had stopped completely…

…could have been overwhelmed by the sea of rain and sewage, which has possibly dampened the sparkplugs and entered the exhaust pipes as well. Those that are still making headway in the mire should be happy for it is only their upholstery, now a soggy mass, they should worry about.

Total travel time to Davao City is usually 44 hours. But this special run will last six days with stops scheduled at 10 provinces and cities.

10pm

The taxi driver in the movie with the same title said, Thank God for the rain to wash away all the dirt in the streets.” This time I will not agree with him because the endless torrent that began at about mid-afternoon has yet to show signs of abating. Five minutes after pulling out of Pasay in a new Philtranco bus, we are stuck. So much for the minor miracle. I still think it will be smooth sailing from Magallanes. The itinerary indicates that we should be in Sariaya, Quezon jst after midnight for a late supper…

Day 2

October 17

12:40am

We are at the gas station in San Pedro where a burger chain reigns unchallenged at the time of the night in this type of weather. I’ll give you one guess why we’re here; the traffic was of diabolical proportions. And the rain hasn’t let up at all.

About 200 cars are parked here. Many unfortunate souls have just about had it. Children are fast asleep on the arms of mothers. Some of the women, their eyeliners melted by the night, a bit of mucus and, for some, maybe tears as well, smoked in stony silence. Some of the men stayed in the driver’s seat, their bent bodies frozen in the same position when the full extent of tiredness hit them.

There were those, however, who were in high spirits. These creatures of the night consumed coffee and chocolates in massive quantities. Most of the men among them, specifically those who were determined to reach their destinations before sunrise, kept themselves awake. No one contemplated one of the most fatal mistakes, that of falling asleep while driving.

Because of the chaos, the whole traveling schedule is screwed up. I play a tape on the Walkman and the first song is Jethro Tull’s Hymn 43…to me, listening to rock music is the best way to alleviate the impatience and stress brought about my traffic. We’re doing about three feet every three minutes. Someone suggest watching a movie on the VCR on board. The driver obliges with Six Days, Seven Nights. An hour later, we still have to hit the Carmona exit.

4:04am

The late supper in Sariaya has now become an early breakfast. We had traveled more than six hours.
