Thomas Jane Drops Out of The Punisher 2

Posted on Tuesday, May 15th, 2007 at 4:56 pm by: Peter Sciretta

The Punisher star Thomas Jane revealed to AICN that he is dropping out of the proposed Punisher sequel.

“I regretfully and painfully had to pull out of P2. I can’t tell you how completely broken up I am about it,” Jane wrote. “Punisher fans are already fighting an uphill battle as it is. And I’ve always felt a responsibility to fight that fight for them and with them so that Frank Castle gets the treatment he deserves.”

While I very much hated the Punisher movie, but love the comic book character. I have a feeling that with the success of the family friendly comic book movies, the studio wanted to take the character in a more PG direction. And this is just my assumption.

Jane also wrote:

“What I won’t do is spend months of my life sweating over a movie that I just don’t believe in. I’ve always loved the Marvel guys, and wish them well. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to search for a film that one day might stand with all those films that the fans have asked me to watch.”

Hulk and Iron Man to Appear in The Avengers Movie?

Posted on Friday, May 18th, 2007 at 12:49 pm by: Peter Sciretta

In the past I’ve viciously bashed Zak Penn as an overrated hack. He gets a lot of credit for being one of the writers on Bryan Singer’s X2, which many consider to be one of the best comic book adaptations of all time. But truth be told, he’s written a lot of crap, including the Elektra movie, X-Men: The Last Stand and an early draft of Fantastic Four. Anyway, when it comes to comic book movies, Penn is Hollywood’s golden boy of the moment. Not only is he writing the script for The Incredible Hulk do-over, but also a young X-Men spinoff and a film based on Marvel’s The Avengers. Penn now tells MTV that he hopes to bring both Hulk and Iron Man on screen together in the superhero team-up.

“‘Avengers’ is definitely going to happen; the idea was always to do a crossover with multiple superheros,” Penn revealed of the superhero tag team group, Marvel’s answer to DC’s Justice League. “I’m waiting to let ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Hulk’ come out because those are two characters that could appear in it. I used to think that movie would be impossible to make but now I feel like it’s not.”

Tagged by Marvel as “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes”, the Avengers originally consisted of Ant-Man, Wasp, Thor, Iron Man, and the Hulk. But The Hulk departed very early on (The Avengers vol. 1, #2) allowing Captain America to join. But the roster has always been fluid, allowing a rotating group of super-heroes to partake in the team. But most people assumed that Hulk and Iron Man would not be included in the film, especially since high profile actors (Edward Norton and Robert Downey Jr) are playing the characters in their own big blockbuster releases. One of the big problems of doing another X-Men movie is getting all the stars to sign on. With huge actors it’s harder to schedule and way more expensive. But does Paramount believe they could secure both Norton and Downey to a team-up movie?

We Own The Night Movie Trailer

post-31605-1179742277.jpg

What if The Departed took-place in New York Cit, followed the inner workings of the Russian mob and instead involved two brothers? It would probably look a lot like We Own The Night. It probably helps that the film also stars our favorite foul-mouthed Boston cop Dignam. And that's actually not an insult but a compliment. The Departed was the best movie of last year, and this looks like it could be close to that level (well, you never know from just a trailer). The film is written and directed by James Gray (Little Odessa, The Yards) and premieres at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix, Robert Duvall, and Eva Mendes star in this story about a New York nightclub manager tries to save his brother and father from Russian mafia hit men. Check out the movie trailer after the jump.

Universal owns the distribution rights, although the release date is not yet set in the US. Our best educated guess says that this film will hit theaters in Late-Late 2007, just in time for Awards season.

We Own The Night Movie Poster Features Twin Towers

Posted on Monday, May 21st, 2007 at 12:17 am by: Peter Sciretta

On Saturday, we posted the movie trailer for James Gray's New York City-based Russian mob story We Own The Night. We noted that the film showed promise, and went as far as comparing it to Martin Scorsese's The Departed. Well, apparently the film takes place in the last millennium, because the film's theatrical poster (via: IMPA) shows the movie's stars, Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes and Robert Duvall with the Twin Towers and the New York City skyline in the background. Obviously the Twin Towers have appeared in movie marketing since 9/11, but as far as I know, only in 9/11 related films and documentaries (World Trade Center, United 93).

After the 2001 attack happened, Hollywood spent a lot of time and money eliminating the WTC from upcoming films and promotional materials (Spider-Man, Zoolander …etc). And while I understand that seeing the towers in the background of a scene could be distracting, I always felt that digitally removing them was an insult to the people who died in the towers. It's almost like you're pretending that they never existed. Anyways, I'm glad to see that 2929 is not afraid to include the towers on the new poster, seen right. I wonder, does anyone know if this is the first post-9/11 non-9/11 Hollywood film to feature the towers on a movie poster?

And if you have not yet, check out the movie trailer. The film is currently playing at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. Universal owns the distribution rights, although the release date is not yet set in the US. Our best educated guess says that this film will hit theaters in Late-Late 2007, just in time for Awards season.

Indiana Jones 4 (Indiana Jones And The City Of The Gods)

Word from the Sewer Chewers is that Karen Allen will be reprising the role of Marion Ravenwood in the new film. Allen, as you will remember, was Indy's gal in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The film, the report continues, would open with an action scene pitting Dr. Jones against Soviet agents at the US's secret Area 51 base, long connected with alien and UFO research. Perhaps the government is holding onto some kind of alien-related artifacts or Roswell debris that the Russians are desperate to acquire. Whatever it is, it launches Indy on his last great mission.

Barbarella:

Robert Rodriguez is following up the creatively inspired financial flop GRINDHOUSE by upgrading the cheeky 1968 sci-fi/erotica BARBARELLA. Veteran producer Dino De Laurentiis has brought Rodriguez on board, virtually guaranteeing the 2008 release for Universal's new adventures of the oft-disrobing intergalactic agent, previously played by a frisky Jane Fonda.

Rodriguez proclaims "I love this iconic character and all that she represents." He's now working with CASINO ROYALE scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade on the update, which has been described as a "female James Bond in space".

The Dark Knight:

Anthony Michael Hall of current "The Dead Zone" fame and previous The Breakfast Club fame has joined the cast of The Dark Knight and told The Daily News that the plot is so secret he's forbidden to even say what character he's portraying.

"I signed a confidentiality agreement, and I can't say which part I'm playing because it affects the story," says Hall. "I can't give away the suspense — it's a $200 million surprise, and I don't want to be the guy to ruin it."

Today the 'campaign poster' for Harvey Dent was taken down today and replaced with an error message in red lettering stating 'Page Not Found'. However a quick highlight of the page reveals many "Ha! Ha! Ha!"'s and some random lettering placed throughout the laughter. The random letters, once slung together, reveals the message of "See You In December." While The Dark Knight isn't due to hit theaters until next summer, it is a sure possibility that we'll be seeing more of the Joker by Christmas time which could include the first trailer for the film.

Mr. Brooks:

Consider MR. BROOKS. A successful businessman. A generous philanthropist. A loving father and devoted husband. Seemingly, he's perfect. But Mr. Brooks has a secret -- he is an insatiable serial killer, so lethally clever that no one has ever suspected him -- until now.

Academy Award winner Kevin Costner stars as Earl Brooks, a man who has managed to keep his two incompatible worlds from intersecting by controlling his cunning, wicked alter ego Marshall (Academy Award winner William Hurt). But now, as Mr. Brooks succumbs to one last murderous urge, an amateur photographer (Dane Cook) witnesses the crime. Suddenly Brooks finds himself entangled in the dark agenda of an opportunistic bystander, as well as hunted by the unorthodox and tenacious detective Tracy Atwood (Demi Moore). Can Mr. Brooks outsmart his adversaries and conceal his shocking double life from his wife (Marg Helgenberger) and daughter (Danielle Panabaker) or will someone expose his crimes and his identity once and for all in this unpredictable and electrifying new thriller.

Indiana Jones 4:

Reports says that Cate Blanchett's role in the upcoming "Indiana Jones IV" may NOT be that of the love interest as many are expecting, but rather the antagonist. Apparently she'll be a villain in league with some nasty Russians. The article confirms most of the recent talk of the film involving Cold War-era Russians, Area 51, aliens, thirteen crystal skulls, Inca/Mayan pyramids & temples, the return of Karen Allen, a son. What they add is that Blanchett's role will be that of a villain in cahoots with the Russians.

He-Man: Masters of the Universe

It's now confirmed that producer Joel Silver and Warner Bros. Pictures are moving forward with a planned "Masters of the Universe" live-action film adaptation of the famous Mattel toyline and 1980's animated series. The producer and studio are in negotiations with Mattel to acquire the rights to the property. The new version reimagines the property as Prince Adam (He-Man) being a solider who stumbles upon the magical world Eternia where the evil Skeletor is using a technology-fueled army to wipe out all traces of magic. Not much additional news was added other than it would be filmed using the 300-style heavy greenscreen approach.

The five-year-old franchise is the best selling PC game in history, with worldwide sales topping 85 million, bringing in over $1.6 billion. Pic will be a live-action version. Brian Lynch will script; story is under wraps with talent yet to be named.

The Untouchables: Capone Rising

It's not known whether Brian De Palma will push on with his planned prequel The Untouchables: Capone Rising. But, one thing is certain. Nicolas Cage will not be playing Capone as previously reported. Cage had been in talks to revive the role originated by Robert De Niro, but his schedule could not be worked out. It was announced at Cannes last week that Gerard Butler had joined the cast. He will be playing Sean Connery's character Jimmy Malone if the film actually gets made.

Bond 22:

Reports says that Paul Haggis has been signed up to polish the script for Bond 22, the still untitled Bond movie! Regular writers Robert Wade and Neal Purvis have once again written the script and it looks like Barbara Broccolli has decided that it worked on Casino Royale so why not get Haggis back to do a rewrite again. Still no word on what the plot is though or when the movie will film.

The Incredible Hulk:

The explosive, action-packed adventure in one of the all-time most popular superhero sagas unfolds with a cure in reach for the world's most primal force of fury: THE INCREDIBLE HULK. We find scientist Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) living in shadows, scouring the planet for an antidote. But the warmongers who dream of abusing his powers won't leave him alone, nor will his need to be with the only woman he has ever loved, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler).

Upon returning to civilization, our brilliant doctor is ruthlessly pursued by The Abomination (Tim Roth) -- a nightmarish beast of pure adrenaline and aggression whose powers match The Hulk's own. A fight of comic-book proportions ensues as Banner must call upon the hero within to rescue New York City from total destruction.

The Bourne Ultimatum:

It appears that The Bourne Ultimatum, the forthcoming third installment in Universal's espionage franchise, may be Oscar winner Matt Damon's last time playing the amnesiac rogue assassin. According to The Daily Telegraph and several other outlets, Damon was at the Cannes film festival in France to promote Ocean's Thirteen when asked about his future as Jason Bourne.

"The Bourne thing I'm definitely done with," Damon declared, adding that the Robert Ludlum-created character could very well live on with a new actor in the role.

The story centers on a ninja warrior, part of a centuries-old legacy and bloodline, forced to confront the reality of covert warfare in the modern world. The Last House on the Left (Remake):

Wes Craven is plowing straight ahead with his The Last House on the Left redo. According to Variety, he has hired Dennis Iliadis to direct and Adam Alleca to write the horror update.

Craven himself is producing the new film with Marianne Maddalena and Sean S. Cunningham. According to Craven, the film will retain its original flavor. Released in 1972, The Last House on the Left revolved around a couple of killers who unknowingly take refuge with one of their victims' parents. Wes plans on making the film more realistic this time around. He stated that, "The first one was arch, especially in relation to the killers."

The Dark Knight:

The "Batman Begins" sequel will mark the first major feature to be even partially shot using Imax cameras. These sequences will be combined with the rest of the film - lensed in 35mm - to produce the final product.

The first of the Imax-lensed scenes - a prologue that introduces the Joker (Heath Ledger) - was shot in Chicago last month, several weeks in advance of the actual start of principal photography. The photo above is from that shoot, as is this photo which you can see another blurry distant shot of Heath in Joker garb - but it gives you an idea of the look including the green hair. Additional scenes will be filmed with Imax cameras during the course of production. The film is scheduled for a July 18th 2008, day-and-date theatrical release with Imax theaters.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Jerry Bruckheimer Films negotiated a seven-figure deal to acquire the feature film rights to bestselling videogame "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time." Pic is being earmarked as a feature film for Disney. Deal includes a script being penned by game creator Jordan Mechner. John August is exec producing and supervising Mechner on the script. August says the character of the prince is like a 9th century Indiana Jones. "He's fourth in line to the throne, with no shot of ever becoming king. Game, set in 9th century medieval Persia, tells the story of how a young adventurous prince who uncovers a dangerous artifact in a remote mountain kingdom and with the help of an enemy princess, must stop a despot from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy all mankind.

"Prince of Persia" is one of the vidgame industry's oldest franchises, first debuting for PCs in 1989. Game was both critically acclaimed and a bestseller, leading to sequels in 1993 and 1999.
