Best way to secure important files in your computer

an external drive and a secondary computer that's never going to be connected to the internet. Any file that would be open would be from your external drive first and using a virtual pc first before being save to a redundant drives. This is on top of encrypting your drives. Also have a few redundant drives in other places. If you are talking about highly sensitive files that you don't want to spread, never use cloud storage.

Encrypt your drive/files.
I find Veracrypt useful for when you did not encrypt your drive don't/can't reformat your drive.

For drive, the os usually has a tool for encrypting entire drives (though iirc windows needs at least a pro version for that)

2 password protected external drives to protect against manufacturing defects, human error, and potential theft. It's rare, but security is to exists in a state of mild paranoia.
