When a person uses the apostrophe s ('s) tool in word construction, it means one of two things: 1. an indication of possession; or2. a contraction or shortcut when writing a word plus a linking verb (in general). Ergo, when you say it's, you are writing a contraction of IT IS. When you write gent's, you are referring to a gentleman's possession of whatever you refer to.
