Imports or no imports in collegiate sports

Yes with imports. They help raise the level of play. Instead of playing with the normal 6'5" local centers, our players will get used to playing with hulking almost 7 foot behemoths. Mahahasa ang laro ng mga players natin with that kind of competiton.

Look at the current season of NCAA, their first without any imports.

This should prompt us to train kids to be more flexible and play multiple positions and hindi lang set sa lumang mind-set na kung matangkad ka, sentro ka agad. Kung nadi-displace ng mga naglalakihang import ang mga sentro natin, dapat i-develop ang ibang skills ng big man natin like shooting. Admittedly when the post I was quoting was made, hindi pa gaano kalaganap ang stretch four at stretch five na sentro may ability na mag shoot ng tres. Pero look at where the game is now seven years later? Big men are expected to make three point shots.

We Filipinos know that height was never our advantage. That's why the imports that we get from the PBA to the collegiate leagues are centers. Even our national team's starting center is a naturalized foreign player. So we should focus on where we're good at - shooting and playing fast. We should train our big men to develop their outside shooting aside from being able to bang inside along with the imports. E kung puro kapwa Pinoy lang ang kalaro natin at hindi naex-expose ang mga player natin sa mas matatangkad na player at mas mataas na kumpetisyon, e talaga wala tayong mapapala sa international basketball.

I think the first rule of thumb here is to indicate that they're not imports. Rather, they're foreign student-athletes. Note that they are students first, athletes later. Needless to say, they should not be rid of any rights whatsoever.

If everyone here that is against this idea should think about the other side of things. Since we're in this basketball forum, people should see how it curtails the level of play. Just look at the current UCBL Tourney now. UAAP schools wallop NCAA schools by a wide margin, and they don't even have their FSAs playing.

Two points should be cleared from this idea: FSAs help Filipino ballers play to their strengths. Think of why a Carl Tamayo is playing a stretch four instead of a Rhenz Abando playing (at most) a four, when he'd be given opportune time to play a slashing wing in the KBL now.

The other point is that if your be-all end-all for your collegiate favorites would be to wound up in the PBA, then that's on you. This is why the surge of players going to the KBL, Taiwan League, and J.League is massive: because the PBA is totally inept with its fixation on height.
