The Flipside of Social Networking (Facebook, MySpace, Multiply, Friend

Recommended Posts

Social media has its advantages and disadvantages.

An observation, it has mostly been a sort of a smoke and mirrors mechanism for most. People like to project something about their life that isn't really 100% truth.

And yes, social media has made us forget how face-to-face communication is more valuable than being glued to our mobile phones all the time.

It's refreshing to meet up with friends or sit down with family and just have a full-on conversation, like seeing them smile, hearing how their voices shift as they tell their stories...all of those emotional cues and shifts that we don't get to see or hear when we simply use technology to communicate (minus video calls). No amount of emojis could fill that experience.

For me the biggest upside of the proliferation of social networking sites is that it made communication easier with long distance friends and families. On the otherhand, the biggest downside for me is it's potential to unconciously plant negative or false ideas to a person's brain because it's easy to unconciously pick up another person's opinions as one's own.

agree.

The entire thing is a joke.

for all the youngsters here, masasabi ko talagang mas simple ang dating dati. You'll just ask her out for a meal or coffee, tapos usap kayo sa landline or sa text paguwi, at dahan dahan niyo makikilala yung tao based sa kwento niya. eventually, ipapakilala ka nya sa friends niya and vice versa.

tedious maybe, pero it allows both the guy and the girl to start from scratch everytime, para hindi ka hnhaunt ng past mistakes mo.

Nothing compares to conversing with breathing live persons in front of you....unadultered, unedited, and free flowing

Modern technology has made it easier than during the typewriter age to generate and publish or plant false and malicious stories. The possibility of fake stories being fed to an unsuspecting public has been facilitated in digital media.

Anybody with the right devices and internet connection – plus a devious mind – can create and publish almost any material looking professional with crisp images and fancy typography. There is no bar between the malefactor and the worldwide public in the internet.

People who felt alone or depressed get more depressed scrolling through their timelines and seeing how “happy” everyone else is. The comparison of one’s life to another’s has gotten completely out of control and now people are feeling pressured to “live up” to these carefully curated lives they see online and are devastated if and when they cannot. Not to mention, the likes and shares mentality has made everyone practically a slave to social media numbers. The “worth” of something in people’s lives has now become quantifiable by the number of likes and comments it gets when shared. And we’ve all heard the expression – “if you don’t share it on social media, it didn’t happen.”

Can lead to Relationship problems

Drama! That is all part of exposing your life on a social networking website. The pictures with friends who might be ex- boyfriends or girlfriends, messages from admirers, online flirting - it may all seem harmless to you but may have a different effect on your significant other. Several articles and interviews noted that for one particular girl, Facebook was destroying her relationship with her boyfriend which led to her having to delete her profile. The articles further noted that there were not the only one who has had to delete their profile or commit Facebook suicide as it is now being referred to.

The trouble with social media is that it is virtual.

We make virtual friends and virtual enemies online. We spit out our anger and cry in grief on a virtual stage where we may or may not be heard or noticed. We express our disgust over a person or group that may or may not read us, or do not even care.

Some 20 years ago, when it was known only as the Internet, social media, though limited in use by the elite who had access, was a strong and potent weapon for mobilizing direct popular action. They put their causes on email and text messages and the public would act on them. Today, social media has been democratized.

Everyone with a cellphone has a microphone and a stage to gush or rave or rant or cry and react.
