4th place is not really that bad...but it wasn't enough to achieve our goal.

like i've said in my earlier post, it was during the birth of the pba in 1975 when the philippines started its slide down in asian basketball. you can't likewise blame players because of the fortune that the pba brings to them. ikaw na ang swelduhan ng malaki...bigyan ng kotse...tapos baka may pabahay pa yan. kaya tama yung sabi mo...kunwari maglalaro sa philippine team ng isa o dalawang taon, pagkataposa magpapa-draft na. wala na naman ang kawawang pilipinas. bakit kaya ang china na may professional league eh kaya pa din i-dominate ang asian basketball?

tol hindi ako naghihinayang na hindi tau nakausad sa olympics i am so proud of how our gilas fared. nawawalan ako ng pagasa kasi hanggat nanjan ang pba eh alang pag-asa na umusad ang phil basketball. dati isa din ako sa mga nauuto ng pba na ang tingin sa mga basketball stars nila eh the best sa asia. pero ng sinubaybayan ko na ang international scenes. dun ko nakita ang katotohanan na ala pla taung binatbat. maganda ang program ng gilas pero dahil pinipigalan ng pba ang mga manlalaro natin na hasain ang kanilang mga sarili para sa kagalingan ng bansa eh ala taung mararating. ung next program natin ganun din ang mangyayari after 2 or 3 years pupunta na ng pba so back to scratch ulit.. ala ng continuity. kapag ganyan pinakamalayo na na mararating natin is semifinals. pero at least mas mataas pa din kumpara sa pinpadala ng cream of the crop and best players daw sabi ni yeng guiao.

A couple of reasons come to mind. First, they have a bigger pool of talent - 1.5 billion. In the last FIBA, they paraded new 7 footers again. Granted they aren't very good yet (in the Wang ZZ, Yao or Yi JL mode) but given time, these guys will improve.

Second, the Chinese basketball federation, as supported by the Chinese government, is very strict when selecting players for the national team. Once a player has been selected for the national pool very rarely can the player drop out or refuse voluntarily. Ma Jian and Wang ZZ did this and they were blacklisted from the team for several years even when they were already willing to return. A few years ago, Sun Yue's professional team disallowed him from joining the national team. Know what the CBA did? They suspended the whole team from playing in the league! Kaya ba ng SBP/BAP ang ganyang klaseng pang-di-disiplina?? This then ensures that the team can gain the needed continuity and chemistry. As far as I know, it was only Yao that was given some sort of "star" treatment but still his Rockets contract had a provision for his participation in the national team.

tama ka diyan kaibigan. sabi ko nga, the downfall of philippine dominance in asian basketball started when the pba was born. ganyan din ang tingin ko noon...mga professionals kasi kaya magagaling. mali pala. pagsamasamahin mo man ang labindalawang magagaling na pba players di pa din uubra maski siguro sa kazakhstan. let's admit it...pba is for entertainment. porma ika nga. i believe gilas reached this far because of exposure and familiarity by playing together for almost 3 years. malapit na...kaso pba bound na naman yung mga players ng gilas kaya wala na naman.

wow!!! talk about chinese government having a solid grip on chinese basketball. tama ka chief. kaya ba gayahin ng sbp at bap ang ganyang disiplina? ako na siguro ang magsasabi na hindi kasi unang aangal ang mga may-ari ng pba teams. let's face it...ang tulong na binibigay ng pba is only so much...haphazard ika nga...masabi lang na nakatulong sila. just my thoughts.

Late PBA additions hurt Gilas

By WAYLON GALVEZSeptember 29, 2011, 10:23pm MANILA, Philippines — Serbian coach Rajko Toroman is not trying to make an alibi but he said the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas team could have performed better and finished higher than fourth place had they trained and prepared as a complete team months before the FIBA-Asia Championship.

“We need longer preparation. We didn’t have enough days to prepare the team,” Toroman said Thursday in a phone interview when asked for his overall assessment of the Nationals’ campaign in the FIBA-Asia.

“The biggest issue is time of preparation. If we had three months of preparation with a full team, we’re better team. We’re close to making to the finals. The bronze medal was in front of us. But the team was inexperienced in (executing) offense in the final stretch,” he said.

Smart-Gilas lost to Jordan in the semifinals of the FIBA-Asia, and blew an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter in the bronze medal game against South Korea (70-69).

Toroman said that Smart-Gilas was tougher defensively during the tournament with the addition of power forwards Kelly Williams and Ranidel de Ocampo, a spot where the national team had problems in other international competitions.

However, the offense patterns were sometimes in disarray since the new guys – Williams, de Ocampo and Jimmy Alapag – played mainly by instincts and opposing teams took advantage of that weakness, he said.

The three PBA players came less than two weeks prior to the FIBA-Asia tilt in Wuhan, China.

“The case of Jimmy, Ranidel and Kelly, they were not in game shape and they didn’t jell to the system. We’re playing great defense but not offensively,” Toroman said.

The original plan for Smart-Gilas as far as getting PBA reinforcement was three months before the FIBA-Asia.

Toroman tabbed Williams and Alapag of Talk ’N Text, then Air21 guard Dondon Hontiveros and Asi Taulava of Meralco.

While Hontiveros and Taulava played for the Gilas, Alapag and Williams stayed with TNT since the team of Manny V. Pangilinan had the chance to complete a Grand Slam.

“This is the best result for the country in 24 years. When you finished in front of Iran, Lebanon, Japan and Taiwan, we have to be satisfied. I think that we got to the level that we fought against everybody in Asia, against the top contenders,” Toroman said.

Pangilinan was scheduled to meet Toroman last night whose Gilas contract ends Friday.

Toroman doesn’t want to talk at length about his future plan with the team but he mentioned that his career will not be over even if his contract will not be renewed by SBP.

“It’s true that one agent called me for a job in Europe. The national team of Hungary is interested,” Toroman said. “I also have some offers from Asia. But it’s not true that I talked to the president of the Iran basketball federation.”

TIME TO LET TOROMAN GO. he doesn't have a sound basketball TEAM philosophy. or i doubt if he has basketball philosophy at all. he is a situational coach. his style is forming a team around one good player (haddadi? douthit?). have you ever heard of quotable quotes from him. "the best offense is defense", "they were playing not to lose and not win!", etc. (you know from whom these lines came from). iran as a team never became good. they have strong players that dominate. look where they are now when they're dominant players were stopped.

as for who will be the best coach? i don't know also. norman black maybe. with a new team who will focus and enough time! not loaned out pba players who will be national players only on their spare time.

that has been my point of contention as well. for any league in China na mgdisallow ng players nila to play for national team is a suicidal act.. ganun din para sa mga players na tumanggi. its a matter of giving SBP as well as all PSA na magkaruon ng political will. there should be a law to have these PSA's the authority to compell evry athlete for the Philippine cause. at ung mga liga naman should all be under direct jurisdiction ng mga PSA's.

I don't think that you can gauge a coach's worth by the "quotable quotes" or basketball philosophy that he can share to the public (or media)... and also, you can never argue with "success"...

very well said. if this can be done then there's no way for the philippines to be languishing in asian basketball.

Dude, Iran was never this good back then. They don't illicit any fear to our team then and we used to kick their behind. If my memory serves me right, teams like Kazakhstan, China, Korea and Japan were our only competition then in Asia. Besides, the likes of Haddadi or Bahrami would have not been this good if they were not properly trained or mentored and I could say that Toroman is a big part of that. Look at the way Gilas plays and compare that to current PBA teams. The team did not learn that on their own or grew to be that good overnight. And you don't get to have that discipline thru quotable quotes. Chot Reyes, Norman Black, Yeng Guiao or Tim Cone will not definitely do the trick for us! They simply are not familiar with the international brand of play and it would be a waste of time for them to learn the ropes and develop the team at the same time. Might as well form a Gilas team for PBA na lang kung ganun. My two cents worth..

Kazakhstan is one country to fear in future competitions. They have the materials (big men). They only have to find a TOROMAN-like coach to be big in Asia. For the meantime, we can relish our victories over this team. Problem is, what if, we let go of Toroman and they get his services!!!

Really our problem lies in the fact that our inferiority complex shows up whenever a foreign coach shows up in our country.. It happened with Ron Jacobs or Tim Cone (early in his career) and it has happened with Toroman. You get to hear arguments like these coaches are taking the jobs of purebreed or local coaches when they don't bring new to the table. For Christ sakes! This was the very reason why our brand of play stagnated. When Ron Jacobs came in he brought a whole lot to the game even at PBA and the rest of the teams/coaches adjusted or adapted to it. This is what employing foreign coaches is all about, the transfer of technology or new learning's. Instead of absorbing what can be learned and adapting, these very people waste their time thinking that they don't need to learn anything new and pull everyone down (paging the likes of Yeng Guiao). Heck, SBP should have a consistent program for local coaches as well to train abroad for them to continuously learn and improve. In time this well bear fruit for there is no quick fix to a complicated problem. Now that were back in the semis after how many years I hope that we don't put that to waste and continue the program. If we don't retain Toroman's services then I sure hope we get someone better and also with a rich experience in the international scene.
