Team Pilipinas Basketball

^I agree that James Yap and Kelly Williams should be added but not Arwind Santos. Yap due to his outside sniping and KW due to his rebounding.

Arwind Santos has height / length ... talent-wise he is also better than some of the existing forwards on the Gilas team. Now if he is available and Gilas is already going the route of getting PBA players as reinforcement then why not consider him? Why limit the reinforcement to only 2 when you can have all 7 on the wish list?

Toroman is just milking the SBP. it's not the coach who wins the games. it's the players. and basketball is a sport where height matters.

c'mon wake up guys. basketball is here to stay yeah. i believe that. we Filipinos love watching basketball. pero hanggang ganon na lang tayo. spectators.

we're no longer the basketball gods in Asia, so dream on making it through the Olympics. even if RP has an iota of a chance to play in the 2012 Olympics, ano naman ang laban natin sa mga European teams, much more the USA Basketball team composed of NBA players.

just realistic here. we have lots of good players, maybe if we're talking individual skills, but calling ourselves the only professional basketball league in Asia is a joke. we can't even beat China (Team A).

mag focus na lang tayo sa boxing, billiards and bowling. then maybe football/soccer where height is not crucial to the sport.

that's why SG is a joke. i'm sick and tired of it. they just keep making excuses when losing games and in the tournament.

Toroman is just milking the SBP. it's not the coach who wins the games. it's the players. and basketball is a sport where height matters.-Iran used to be RP's whipping boy. Toroman transformed a team that used to be cannon fodder for the Philippines into a well-oiled machine.

c'mon wake up guys. basketball is here to stay yeah. i believe that. we Filipinos love watching basketball. pero hanggang ganon na lang tayo. spectators.-You're entitled to your opinion.

we're no longer the basketball gods in Asia, so dream on making it through the Olympics. even if RP has an iota of a chance to play in the 2012 Olympics, ano naman ang laban natin sa mga European teams, much more the USA Basketball team composed of NBA players.-I agree that we are no match for the European teams and the USA but you're talking as if we're gonna go to the Olympics with the goal of beating these teams. The goal now is getting to the Olympics. We should concentrate on Asia first before even thinking of beating these European teams and the USA.

just realistic here. we have lots of good players, maybe if we're talking individual skills, but calling ourselves the only professional basketball league in Asia is a joke. we can't even beat China (Team A)-You're talking as if China is an inferior team. China is top 2 in Asia today. The PBA is the first professional league in Asia and the PBA is not the only professional league in Asia today.

mag focus na lang tayo sa boxing, billiards and bowling. then maybe football/soccer where height is not crucial to the sport.- Basketball is still our sport so it's unfair to say to only concentrate on these other sports.

that's why SG is a joke. i'm sick and tired of it. they just keep making excuses when losing games and in the tournament.-As I said, SG has to learn to crawl before it learns to walk.

@China used to be a whipping boy of the Phillippines too and look where we are now with or with out Toroman. Unless you're saying we can beat China.

@ I agree, the ultimate goal of SG is to be able to represent the country in the 2012 olympics.

You're talking as if China is an inferior team. China is top 2 in Asia today. The PBA is the first professional league in Asia and the PBA is not the only professional league in Asia today.

@correct again!

Basketball is still our sport so it's unfair to say to only concentrate on these other sports.

@ On a management point of view, do you want to continue spending your resources on a non winning proposition? I think the guy has a point, why give so much importance on Basketball if boxing can bring us the gold. It is not saying we totally neglect basketball, only to give more importance/focus on winnable sports.

As I said, SG has to learn to crawl before it learns to walk.

Well said BANDWAGONER ... dapat dati mo pa sinasabi ang ganito hindi nun natalo na ng Gilas ang POWERADE at bigla ka nag 360 turnaround:lol:

^ basketball is still our sport but maybe it's better if we just play among ourselves and not compete internationally. kasi sayang lang. and if we win, i don't take pride winning if we will just load our team with naturalized Filipinos so winning through foreign intervention is not really something to be proud of. Look at NCC. sino ba ang nagdala dun? we have chip enggelland, dennis still and jeff moore? take out the 3 and i don't think we will win the jones cup. the last legit team of RP - yung walang halong fil-am and the likes of taulava na questionable naman ang filipino roots - was during the heydays of jawo and co. in the 70s. sure they did not win or even get to compete in the olympics, but they still rule asia at that time at least.

and i don't think we should just aim at getting at the olympics if we will not aspire to at least win a medal. let's be realistic enough here. kahit makalusot tayo sa olympics i don't think we can hurdle the elims.

i love basketball pero nakakainis lang ang nangyayari sa philippine basketball dahil it's been decades since we ruled basketball in asia.

you got my point liar.

we have been overspending too much on basketball even before the pre SG days and yet we haven't delivered anything. if those funds by the millions were spent instead for intensive training in other sports where our country has a better chance of winning, then who knows, we could have won the gold already in the last olympics.

^^ I didn't know you have an investment with SG! :D

Kidding aside, hindi naman public money ang ginagastos ng SG - it's private money from MVP's deep pockets. Bakit tayo maghihimutok kung sa ganitong paraan niya gustong gastusin ang pera niya?

No matter what happens, win or lose, basketball is still king in our country. It is still the most watched and most followed sport. As such, as a businessman, MVP knows this is a good investment in terms of product exposure. If the team does well then that's icing on the cake.

Billiards and bowling aren't Olympic sports - why put money into it? And who watches/follows amateur boxing? Also not worth the investment.

MVP may be patriotic and all but at the end of the day, it's still the bottomline that matters.

why invest in basketball despite the poor returns? its simple, pinoys love basketball. trying to funnel the funds used for a basketball developmental program into the development of another sports program will not capture the hearts of pinoys the same way basketball does.

well, you have a point there. the other side of the coin is the business side. but if you will read the sentiments of other sports columnists, they will also say the same thing - that in spite of our love for basketball, we will not find glory in winning this sport in the Olympic games.

ok so billiards and bowling aren't Olympic sports so the govt should encourage businessmen to contribute in sports development where our athletes have a chance to excel like swimming, track and field, taekwondo etc. our country is that desperate to give a bounty to any athlete who finally brings home that elusive gold but if there's no fund to train our athletes, that's pathetic.

but i agree. MVP has the right to spend his money and he sees basketball as the best medium to promote his business interests. winning is just icing on the cake.

SG after all was created first and foremost solely to promote MVP's commercial interest in the guise of patriotism.

Like you and many others in this forum, I am frustrated with the state of Philippine basketball especially during the last 15 years. And i share the same feeling in terms of recruiting Fil-Ams/imports and PBA stars by the dozen. Parang quick fix na naman when we all thought this was going to be a developmental team with more long range goals.

But I disagree that we shouldn't compete internationally if we don't have a chance of winning. The beauty of sports is that anything can happen - bilog ang bola 'ika nga. Ang sarap nga ng feeling if our team fares well unexpectedly diba? Look at Uruguay and Ghana in the recent World Cup or even Germany. Nobody thought these teams will fare well but they somehow overachieved and brought great pride to their countries. And how about Butler's run at the NCAAs? Small school bringing down the big boys and reaching the brink of an NCAA championship.

^ i'd be happier if we win with an all legit Filipino line up hindi yung nakulangan lang tayo sa sentro, pakikiusapan na natin si Taulava. at sino pa yung mga kano na pina process natin para maging naturalized players ng SG to represent RP? where's the glory in winning kung mga egoy ang dahilan kaya tayo nanalo? pati coach iranian. duh! if basketball is king here, then we should have the talent not only among the players but also among the coaching staff as well. so for as long as Eala and co. will try to bring in naturalized players and Fil-ams and foreign coaches, SG is a joke and was just created for commercial purposes.

Bopols ka talaga sinungaling! The subject is Toroman then you comment about my Toroman post about China. I can't help but comment and laugh about your post. You'll really find a way to comment about my post even if your post is way off tangent.
