rakizta
CJ Giles already on their line-up so what you think with this young team under a foreign coach? Quote Link to comment
bill_262003
Players wise, they are still too raw for next years competition. But I think the idea of putting up a team exclusively to represent the country is good. It has some bad sides to it though. One of which is, the players don't get to play competitive ball that much. How many times do you get to play them in a year? And against whom? Maybe a good idea is to insert the team into on-going tournaments in the country and also outside of the country. The problem with some of the tournaments outside of the country, sometimes the other teams don't really play 100% so the competitive level is not that high. Playing them in the local tourney should give them some confidence in their skills (which I believe they have). I think the Smart Gilas team, once it matures, could be a better "team" than the current Powerade PBA Selection Team. Again, take note of the word "team". For one, the players don't have any egos to protect, the coach need not be too fair in the playing time (yes, I am very critical of the Powerade Team rotation since I believed it lost us some games that we should have won!). Again, basketball is a team sport. And a team that plays well together will probably have a better chance. It is only the exposure of this team that I am worried about. Plucking all collegiate members mean that some of these players have not yet matured or gained the confidence needed to really excel. They need to play in more tournaments and should be inserted into the PBA and other tournaments. PBA should adopt one conference for FIBA Rules and allow the Smart Gilas team to participate in that conference. I have high hopes for this team. Quote Link to comment

Could the PBA atleast accept Smart Gilas as a temporary PBA team? Yun na lang cguro conswelo natin for them opting not to lend players to the National team. Quote Link to comment

rakizta
much better if we still send a PBA player that will train just like a Smart Gilas the problem is....kung willing mag sacrifice ang mga mother team na wala ang star nila? I do believed that we sent a great and talented player sa FIBA-Asia,the only problem on thatis their familiarity on the court lalo na dun sa mga kakampi nila bottomline is kelangan mag sacrifice ng PBA if we still want to bring back our glory sa basketball Quote Link to comment
dencio
^^ hindi yan gagawin ng PBA kaya nga pinaubaya na nila sa Smart Gilas ang national team eh. Let's just hope Gilas develops into an NCC-type team. Long term naman ang outlook nito eh - uhmmm, 4-5 years at least. Quote Link to comment
TheButcher
Smart-gilas, Could this be the answer? - NOT! Quote Link to comment
amante
There are plans for Smart Gilas to play in the PBA All-Filipino Cup.I think playing the team here would do wonders in helping the the team gel. However, I would suggest that instead of the All-Filipino Cup, why not the reinforced conference and then have the PBA teams get imports of unlimited height. Not suggesting of course the team not travel abroad and play international competition. At least, annual naman ang Jones Cup and FIBA Champions cupThey can play there every year or at least until when the next FIBA Asia comes up in 2011 Quote Link to comment
robo_cop
its a better option than sending a team composed of pba players at the spur of the moment. I think it would be better if this team join tournaments abroad other than the PBA Quote Link to comment
peithe
The most logical proven formula to date is still the NCC masterplan ... it started with theRP Youth and the core of this team remained intactfor the ABC Tournament, with some changes along the way to include new promising players. I think this is what the SMART Gilas team is trying to emulate. As I have made my stand in the other thread, the POWERADE PBA-backed team may be the stonger team talent wise but it may not be the most prepared one. The PBA first and foremost objective is revenues and "commercial exposure" to its shareholders. Yes the PBA adjusted its schedule to allow its players to play for the country during offseason but do you honestly think that they would be able to fit in the min 3 international tournament each year. Aside from this its not only a matter of playing together in tournaments, these players will also have to train/practice together whole year round. Sad to say, the Powerade team for example hardly could come up with the complete rooster when they practice at the time the PBA is still on-going since they would not dare pullout the players whose team are still in contention. So most of the time the players of Burger King were asked to attend in order to have enought players for the scrimmage. I am all for the Gilas Team playing as a "guest squad" in the PBA but are qualified to win the championship ... this was mababatak talaga sila ng husto and the PBA players can't play it loose against them since there is something at stake. 7 Quote Link to comment
echronic
good point by peithe... hmm, for the nation, i guess smart gilas should get SOME players from PBA.. like norwood dillinger and i think sol mercado..or whoever they think could help them win.. --ewan lang kung payagan sila ng mother teams.. --sana talaga puwede sila kumuha ng pba players, yun needed talaga kahit ilan lang. then in exchange, makakuha ang mother team ng additional draft pick sa 1st round... what do u think guys? kanski
^ papayag kaya ang ibang teams na maisahan sila ng mga kalaban nila in the form of an added 1st round draft pick? i doubt it. ...much better if we still send a PBA player that will train just like a Smart Gilas... I do believed that we sent a great and talented player sa FIBA-Asia... wala atang magagawa ang isang player lang, kahit na great and talented pa siya. he,he.. Quote Link to comment
