Greg Slaughter or Ian Sangalang? Mark Caguioa likes 7-footer for Ginebra

Greg Slaughter or Ian Sangalang?

That has been the looming debate among top big men in the upcoming PBA rookie draft.

Both men have already expressed their intention to join the draft, with both being tabbed as a possible top overall pick.

With Barangay Ginebra San Miguel having a chance at the first overall pick — it owns the draft pick originally belonging to the Air 21 Express — Gin Kings superstar Mark Caguioa has weighed in on the debate.

Slaughter, who stands seven feet tall, led Ateneo to back-to-back titles and is a longtime member of the Philippine national basketball pool.

On the other hand, the 6-foot-7 Sangalang is one of the top big men in the amateur ranks, winning Most Valuable Player honors in the NCAA and the PBA D-League.

But the two center could have competition as the top pick if two-time UAAP Most Valuable Player Ray Parks decides to declare for the draft. For now, however, Caguioa wants to keep the discussion between Slaughter and Sangalang.

NO SHORTAGE OF TALENT IN ROOKIE DRAFT POOL

Former Gilas Pilipinas player Greg Slaughter and Ateneo teammates Nico Salva and Justin Chua banner a talent-laden cast who have applied for the 2013 PBA Rookie Draft slated Nov. 3 at Robinson's Place Ermita.

It could be the deepest Draft pool in years especially if two-time UAAP MVP awardee Bobby Ray Parks of National U decides to join the pool.

Former San Sebastian stars Ian Sangalang and Ronald Pascual have reportedly decided to make themselves available for the Draft. They are expected to beat the Oct. 18 deadline for submission of application papers.

Aside from Slaughter, Salva and Chua, other heralded players already in the list are Letran behemoth Raymond Almazan, UP's Mike Silungan and Mark Lopez, FEU's Mark Bringas, Adamson's James Camson, San Beda's Jose Caram, San Sebastian's Dave Najorda, JRU's Jeckster Apinan and Arellano's James Forrester.

If Parks joins the draft, it could well be him and Slaughter as the top two picks in the draft exercise.

San Mig Coffee and Barangay Ginebra dispute the rights for the top pick in a lottery to be held at halftime of Game One of the PBA Governors' Cup best-of-seven finale Friday.

The Mixers' and the Kings' cracks at the top pick originally belonged to GlobalPort and Air21, respectively. The rights were transferred on previous trade deals.

Also by virtue of past trade transactions, Barako Bull has three first round picks (fourth, fifth and sixth) while Rain or Shine has two (third and ninth).

GlobalPort owns the seventh pick, Alaska eighth and San Mig Coffee 10th.

There's a big possibility that the top pick will come from down south in Cebu for the second straight year.

Last year, Petron Blaze chose Junmar Fajardo over Calvin Abueva as the No. 1 Draft selection.

Fajardo, from University of Cebu, and Slaughter, from University of Visayas, used to be fierce rivals in the Cebu collegiate league until the latter moved over to Ateneo.

Others who are likely to go high in the coming draft are Sangalang, Almazan, Salva, Pascual and Chua.

Slaughter, Sangalang, Salva and Pascual were members of the Philippine team that won the last Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta. (SB)

Barangay Ginebra will get the first overall pick in the 2013 PBA Draft, following the results of the draft lottery, conducted Friday at the MOA Arena, during the halftime intermission of game one of the 2013 PBA Governors' Cup Finals between the San Mig Coffee Mixers and the Petron Blaze Boosters.

Ginebra will likely pick between two centers, 6'7" San Sebastian Stag Ian Sangalang and 7'0" Ateneo Blue Eagle Greg Slaughter. The last time Ginebra had the first overall pick was in 1996 when the team drafted Marlou Aquino.

The draft is set for November 3

Gsm is mulling daw in bringing back siot

Oh HELL NO. Mas okay pa yung staff rumors na kumakalat ngayon as per Fidel Mangonon - okay lang daw na natalo sila Pido sa UAAP dahil he'll be coaching a champion PBA team daw.

Build the future ginebra team centered around Ray Ray

Ray Parks Jr. is not yet eligible for the draft. And that would be pointless without a big man to guard the paint.

the Kings officially got the 1st pick in the upcoming draft.

Will they now try to convince Ray RAy to join the draft or they will be happy to choose between Greg and Ian?

transition time prepare for exit of mc jj, stop being a security agency puro jaguards. Improve the middle.

JJ's departure has already been insured with the arrival of LA. MC47 still has at least 3 to 4 years minimum in him barring major injuries. And this year's pick will definitely improve the middle regardless of whom they pick.

May trade rumor na kumakalat, belga and ibanez or Norwood to ginebra for maierhofer and draft pick. Hindi pa naman sure

Malabong matuloy yan sir. Di bibitawan ng ROS si Norwood.

i don't think they need parks.... without a good big man, it will be difficult to win... for me, they should draft either slaughter or sangalang, re build around la and ellis....

I agree. Besides, as mentioned, Parks isn't eligible yet.

trade na lang kaya si mc47 baka sakali magbago chemistry

LMFAO. That's the funniest thing I've ever heard a Ginebra fan say.
