Sevilla footballer Puerta dies following heart attack

MADRID (AFP) - Sevilla's Spanish international defender Antonio Puerta died on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack during a Spanish league match on Saturday, the Spanish football federation (RFEF) told AFP.

"It's official. Puerta has died," a RFEF spokesman told AFP.

The 22-year-old had been in "very critical" condition in the intensive care unit of Seville's Virgen del Rocio hospital where he had been hooked up to a life support machine, the hospital said earlier in a statement.

Puerta, a star in Seville's successful UEFA Cup defence last season and the club's top three league finish, collapsed after half an hour of Sevilla's 4-1 win over Getafe on the opening day of the Spanish season.

He was able to walk gingerly to the dressing rooms where he collapsed a second time before being taken to hospital.

Puerta is not the first footballer to die of a heart attack.

In January 2004 Benfica's Hungarian international striker Miklos Feher died during a Portuguese league match from a heart attack.

Seven months earlier Cameroon international Marc-Vivien Foe collapsed and died while playing in the Confederations Cup tournament in France.

Earlier Tuesday, the hospital had said: "The clinical evolution of the patient is unfavourable," citing prolonged cardiac arrest which had damaged Puerta's organs and led to a lack of oxygen to the brain.

The Spanish Football League (LFP) announced that next Monday's league match between Sevilla and Osasuna had been postponed as a mark of respect.

"The Spanish professional league wishes to pass on its most sincere condolences to the family of Antonio Puerta of Sevilla and to all connected with Sevilla," the LFP said in a statement.

"The LFP has declared an official day of mourning for the next round of matches and has asked all affiliated clubs to maintain a minute's silence before games," the statement concluded.

Sevilla also immediately sent a request to European football's governing body, UEFA, for Tuesday's Champions League return leg against AEK Athens in Greece to be postponed.

It was not immediately clear if the request had been granted.

Puerta's reputation had blossomed in recent months with Sevilla's European runs - they also won the UEFA Cup in 2006 - and according to recent British media reports both Arsenal and Manchester United of the English Premiership had run the rule over the youngster.

West Ham in talks to sign Brazil star Adriano

LONDON (AFP) - West Ham have made an approach to sign Inter Milan's out-of-favour striker Adriano on loan.

The Premier League club were reported to have sent chief executive Scott Duxbury to Milan on Tuesday to start talks with the Brazilian.

Adriano has been told he can leave the Serie A champions and had already been offered to Arsenal, who turned down the chance to sign him.

West Ham have invested heavily in the transfer market since Eggert Magnusson took over the club last season, and the attempt to sign such a famous name is further evidence of the Icelandic businessman's determination to take the Hammers into the game's upper echelons.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger decided that Adriano would not improve his squad despite the pre-season sale of Thierry Henry to Barcelona.

"I was offered Adriano on loan and I said no," Wenger said. "We do not need him and it was an easy decision to make because we're not out there to sign another striker.

"The agreement was for a loan. Adriano has qualities we don't need. They wanted to give us a player but wanted one back in return.

"I won't say who it was. I didn't want to lose the player they requested. I didn't necessarily think Adriano would upset the balance of the squad."

Condolences to the family of Antonio Puerta of La Liga's Sevilla. He was a good player, only 22, died of multiple organ failure due to prolonged cardiac arrest after fainting on the field. Hope this would be an inspiration to Sevilla football club to get the La Liga Cup this season.

yep Derby sucks especially when they didnt even bother signing more players to help them improve the team, i mean they were just barely good in the championship.

what can i say United still look nervous out there, it seems like alex ferguson hasnt got the right balance yet with the squad. Tevez, Anderson, Scholes and Rooney play a similar role, while Saha seems like the only true striker for United.
