nanuod ba kayo ng champions league kagabi? yung bulgarian team sya na may 18 year old goalkeeper. hehehe the goallie allowed 3 goals in 4 minutes. Including an own goal. Grabe ang kaba nung bata.

I was able to catch the highlights of that game on ESPN. The own goal was simply horrendous!!! He was very complacent when he tried to field the ball. The defender made a good backpass, he just made a complete mess out of it. There was no concentration and focus at all. Just like what you said, must've been the nerves.

Imagine,if United have won that game, baka nakahabol pa sila sa chelsea nun <_<

Nightmare on Eastwood street as Manchester United crash out of League Cup

by Angus MacKinnon

November 7, 2006

LONDON (AFP) - Alex Ferguson's third decade in charge of Manchester United has got off to the worst possible start -- and it's all down to a fervent Red Devils fan.

A wonderful free-kick from Freddy Eastwood mid-way through the first half was enough to give struggling Championship outfit Southend an unlikely 1-0 victory at Roots Park, and the died-in-the-wool United fan was not about to apologise to Fergie for wrecking his anniversary celebrations, a day after the Scot celebrated 20 years in charge at Old Trafford.

"I'm a Man U fan and to play them was unbelievable," the Southend striker said. "Cup games are hard and obviously they found that out.

"I fancied my chances from the free-kick and as soon as I hit it I knew it was in."

Although they had to rely on a superb performance from goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan, Southend produced a performance that belied their current position as the side propping up the Championship, 43 places below United in the English football hierarchy.

Flahavan said he had been prepared for a busy night against a United side that started with ten full internationals on the pitch.

"We knew we would be under pressure and all the lads defended brilliantly," the goalkeeper said. "When we saw the side they put out we knew we were in for a game.

"I'm pleased to make the saves and we're looking forward to the next round. This might be a confidence-booster for us to pick ourselves up."

Manager Steve Tilson admitted he had been pessimistic at the start of the match before watching his players serve up the best result of his career.

"To be honest, I just wanted to keep the score down but we grew in confidence and could have nicked another one at the end."

United's Premiership rivals Charlton and Newcastle both survived, but only after edging penalty shoot-outs.

But Southend were joined in the last eight of the tournament by minnows Wycombe, who overcame fellow League Two outfit Notts County 1-0 courtesy of Jermaine Easter's strike three minutes after the interval.

League One side Chesterfield took Charlton to the brink of humiliation after veteran striker Wayne Allison, 38, rounded the scoreline off at 3-3 with just seconds of extra-time left.

Chesterfield had led twice in regulation time but could not complete a hat-trick of top flight scalps in this year's competition following wins over Manchester City and West Ham in previous rounds.

On-loan goalkeeper Scott Carson was Charlton's hero, diving to his left to keep out Chesterfield captain Mark Allott's effort with Chesterfield's final spot-kick.

That gave Hermann Hreidarsson the chance to wrap things up and the Icelandic striker made no mistake with his left-foot strike.

It was an equally stressful night for Newcastle, who had looked set to go out to fellow Premiership strugglers Watford before captain Scott Parker scored to make it 2-2 with just four minutes of extra time left.

Glenn Roeder's side went on to win a nervy penalty shoot-out 5-4.

Having been given an almighty fright by Crewe in the previous round, Manchester United were taking no chances against Southend.

Both Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo were on duty in the Essex seaside town against opponents who had not won in the league since the middle of August.

That record did not dampen the enthusiasm of the 11,500 capacity crowd that turned out to see if their local club could reach the last eight for the first time in its history.

They were not disappointed. After David Jones conceded a free-kick 25 yards out, Eastwood stepped up to curl a superb shot past Tomasz Kuszczak in the United goal.

And despite generating a string of chances, United could not find the equaliser that would have kept their defence of the only trophy they won last season alive.

Premier League leader Manchester United was eliminated from the English League Cup on Tuesday night with a 1-0 defeat at Southend, a club that is in last place a division below in the League Championship.

Freddy Eastwood scored with a curling free kick past goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak in the 27th minute. David Jones, who conceded the free kick, hit a post one minute later.

United lost the fourth-round match at Southend's 12,200-capacity Roots Hall stadium despite fielding Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting lineup.

"This is massive," Southend manager Steve Tilson said. "It does not come any bigger than this."

The match was played a day after Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson marked 20 years in charge of the Red Devils.

"It is a great reminder to everyone at the club that football can smack you in the face," Ferguson said. "I have been here 20 years, and I am not impervious to it, either."

Southend goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan, whose team reached the quarterfinals for the first time, helped secure the victory with a string of saves to deny Rooney and Ronaldo.

"I knew it was going to be a busy night for me," Flahavan said. "It is a tremendous achievement. When we saw the side they put out we knew we were in for a game."

Premier League clubs Charlton and Newcastle also advanced to the quarterfinals, needing penalty kicks, while Wycombe beat Notts County 1-0 .

Freddy Adu to train with Manchester United

November 8, 2006

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Freddy Adu will get his long-awaited first taste of European club soccer when he practices with Manchester United for two weeks later this month.

D.C. United and MLS have given the teen star permission to join the famous English team starting Nov. 18, three days after he is expected to play in a U.S. Under-20 national team game against Guatemala in Florida.

D.C. United spokesman Doug Hicks said the practices with Manchester United will not be a tryout and that Adu's rights remain with MLS.

"This is a great opportunity for Freddy," Hicks said Wednesday. "We support his decision to seek additional training opportunities in the offseason."

Adu, who became the youngest player in MLS history three years ago when he was drafted at age 14, has often stated his desire to play for a European club. Such a move will be allowed under international transfer rules when he turns 18 in June.

Adu is under contract to United for one more season, but he said after Sunday's season-ending playoff loss to New England that there have been "some serious talks" that could lead to him playing elsewhere next year.

Adu's workouts with Manchester United were first reported by The Washington Post on its Web site.
