Damn!!! LYON was so strong, they took over the whole second half but they never made a single goal. That, by the way, is their first time in the champions league. DIDA made a good job. Pero I'm sure, Lyon will make it up on the 2nd leg. Quote Link to comment
teio
Martins caps Inter comebackWednesday, 29 March 2006by John Atkin from Giuseppe Meazza A live-wire performance from substitute Obafemi Martins helped FC Internazionale Milano to an impressive 2-1 victory against Villarreal CF in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg. Shock leadMartins came on just after the half-hour but it was after the restart that he found his feet, scoring what proved to be the decisive goal on 54 minutes. The win looked unlikely early on as Diego Forlán gave Villarreal a shock lead, although the home side responded with aplomb. Adriano equalised six minutes later but the night was to belong to fellow forward Martins. Dream startForlán had given the visitors a dream start when he tapped in calmly within 60 seconds of the kick-off after Francesco Toldo could only parry José María Romero's low strike. It was Juan Román Riquelme's through-ball that had created the initial opening and Inter's Alvaro Recoba, preferred ahead of Martins, soon did similar at the other end to send Adriano clear. The Brazilian's chip left Sebastián Viera stranded but Javi Venta was on hand with a goalline clearance. Blistering openingVenta was a late inclusion in the starting XI as he and Juan Manuel Peña returned to provide a boost to coach Manuel Pellegrini, who was without Alessio Tacchinardi, Josico and Rodolfo Arruabarrena through suspension. But while Venta quickly made a contribution, Peña was found wanting on seven minutes when he failed to deal with Dejan Stanković's scuffed right-wing cross. The ball fell kindly for Adriano who swivelled and rifled in from close range – his 12th goal in only 15 UEFA Champions League matches. Midfield generalsIt capped a frenzied beginning to the game in front of an expectant crowd, who had also seen Juan Sebastián Verón test Viera following another defence-splitting pass from Recoba. The Uruguayan forward was a pervasive presence for the Nerazzurri but both back lines gradually found their shape, with Marcos Senna and Esteban Cambiasso key figures in a crowded midfield. Still, the lively Forlán twice forced Toldo into diving stops, while Recoba's bobbling effort earned a corner midway through the half. Recoba injuredThe Inter attacker hobbled off soon afterwards to be replaced by Martins, and the tireless running of the pacy Nigerian gave Inter options and created space in midfield. Verón was the obvious beneficiary, but captain Javier Zanetti also grew more adventurous, making a series of surges into the heart of the Villarreal defence as the visitors were placed on the back foot. Lively presenceMartins emerged for the second half five minutes before his team-mates, and almost gained immediate reward for his conscientiousness when he just failed to reach a cross from César, deployed in place of the injured Luís Figo. Martins was set to lead the field in a mass public jog on Thursday as part of a fitness drive in Milan, but may yet find the exertion too much after an exhausting start to the second period that culminated in Inter taking a deserved advantage. Unusual circumstancesStanković's rasping centre found Martins free at the back post and the 21-year-old flicked the ball into the empty net. That left Villarreal in new territory, as the Spanish team had never before been behind in their maiden UEFA Champions League campaign. Venta needed to be at his best to block Martins soon after, before Riquelme almost fashioned an equaliser, his long-range free-kick striking the crossbar. False hopeIt proved a false dawn as Inter continued to press, though they were unable to add to their lead despite chances for Adriano and Martins. They could come to regret that profligacy in the return in Spain, where they have lost ten of 14 games in UEFA competition, although they beat Villarreal's local rivals Valencia CF 5-1 in their last visit a year ago. Goalless affair at the GerlandWednesday, 29 March 2006by Matthew Spiro from Stade Gerland Olympique Lyonnais survived a torrid first half against AC Milan to keep alive their hopes of reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time. A series of fine saves from Grégory Coupet kept last season's finalists at bay, ensuring that an intruiging quarter-final first leg finished goalless - the first such result involving Lyon in the competition. Last-eight eliminationsFC Porto and PSV Eindhoven ended Lyon's hopes at this stage in the previous two seasons, and the home fans will have feared a similar scenario as Milan dominated early on, Andriy Shevchenko denied by Coupet on three occasions. Inspired by their outstanding custodian, Lyon improved and after enjoying the better of a pulsating second period, will travel to Milan in six days with their chances intact and boosted by the return of Juninho Pernambucano. Uncertain openingThe game had been billed as the biggest in Lyon's history and the French club, aiming for a last-four debut, began nervously. Benoît Pedretti had been drafted into midfield in place of the suspended Juninho but the Brazilian's poise and presence were sorely missed in a frantic opening. Mahamadou Diarra's misplaced pass allowed Gennaro Gattuso to slide Shevchenko clear on seven minutes, but Coupet blocked the Ukrainian's low shot with his legs. Milan's midfield diamond was posing the home side difficulties and with Serginho frequently advancing from left-back, the inexperienced François Clerc looked particularly uncomfortable. One-way trafficLyon presented Milan with another opportunity when Sylvain Wiltord's poor lay-off found Kaká who surged forward before shooting narrowly wide. The one-way traffic continued and Shevchenko seemed certain to break the deadlock on 13 minutes but, after the home team had failed to clear Serginho's cross, the tournament's top scorer was again denied by Coupet's outstretched leg. Unbeaten at home in the UEFA Champions League for over three years, Lyon were a shadow of their usual selves although with Jaap Stam and Cafu absent and Paolo Maldini only fit for the bench, Lyon eventually started to threaten a Milan back line that had Alessandro Costacurta, 40 next month, operating at right-back. Lyon liftFlorent Malouda beat Costacurta for pace on 24 minutes but overhit his cross, then moments later drew a foul from the veteran. John Carew flicked on Pedretti's resulting free-kick, forcing Dida to claw acrobatically off his line. The chance brought the stadium to life and gave Lyon renewed belief, but the Italian side maintained a strangehold on proceedings and created another glorious opening on the stroke of half-time, Shevchenko pouncing on some ponderous defending to head the ball past Cris but see his rising shot parried by the impeccable Coupet. Home surgeLyon, who had only failed to score in two matches this season, began the second half in positive fashion. Malouda and Wiltord were offering more support to Carew, and the hosts enjoyed their first period of sustained pressure. Malouda fired over from long range before Costacurta's slip caused panic in the Milan rearguard as Carew and then Tiago had efforts blocked. Costacurta soon made way for Maldini, while Filippo Inzaghi replaced an ineffective Alberto Gilardino. Strong finishThere was suddenly an extra spring in the step of the Lyon players. Tiago jinked past Andrea Pirlo only to scuff his low shot, then substitute Fred struck an equally tame attempt straight at Dida. The Brazilian produced a fingertip save to keep out Tiago, but the Portuguese midfielder's night ended in disppointment as he picked up a caution that rules him out of the return. ©uefa.com 1998-2006. _eRon_
Shevchenko to ChelseaWritten by: Francisco BarretoAndriy ShevchenkoLONDON, Mar 30 (SW) - The Guardian is reporting that AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko and Chelsea have agreed to terms, signaling a summer move to Stamford Bridge for the Ukraine international. Reports suggest that Shevchenko has agreed in principle to a four-year contract and is prepared to submit a transfer request to Milan. The Italian club value Shevchenko at £35 million, and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich would appear to be content to match the San Siro club’s valuation, though £10 million-rated Hernán Crespo could go the other way in part exchange. The transfer fee and Shevchenko’s wages would cost Chelsea nearly £60 million, and with the London club also expressing interest in luring Bayern Munich’s Michael Ballack and Arsenal left-back Ashley Cole to Stamford Bridge, it could be another summer of unprecedented spending for the English champions. http://www.soccerway.com/news/2006/march/3...enko-to-chelsea pag nakuha ng chelsea si shevchenko, grabe, magiging matindi ang attacking line nila.. panalo Manchester United sa West Ham United, 1-0, a winning goal from Van Nistelrooy to cement his place as the premiereship's top scorer with 20 goals.. _eRon_
Liverpool confirm takeover talksWritten by: Francisco BarretoLiverpool FCLIVERPOOL, Mar 29 (SW) - The governing board of European Cup holders Liverpool have confirmed that it is in negotiation with “a number of parties” interested in taking control of the club. Spanish multi-millionaire Juan Villalonga was linked with the club earlier in the week, promising to transform Liverpool “from a domestically focused club into a global force". But a statement released by the Liverpool board has confirmed that the Spaniard’s offer is not the only one being considered by the Anfield authorities. The statement read: "The board of Liverpool FC has noted the recent press speculation concerning possible third-party investment into the club and can confirm that it is continuing discussions with a number of parties regarding a potential investment of new funds into the club. "Although the structure of any such investment is uncertain, it may include an offer for the entire share capital of the club. Shareholders will be kept updated as appropriate." The club has been the subject of repeated interest from investors in recent years, with Liverpool drawing bids from Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and local businessman Steve Morgan. In November 2005, there were also rumors linking the U.S.-based Kraft family with a potential bid. http://www.soccerway.com/news/2006/march/2...-takeover-talks Wenger: “We will finish the job in Juventus”Written by: Francisco BarretoArsenal's Thierry HenryLONDON, Mar 29 (SW) - Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, fresh off the stunning 2-0 win against Juventus at Highbury, is confident his young side can progess pass Juventus. Wenger said: "My only regret was that I felt there was one more goal in this game for us. "I believe we will finish the job in Juventus but there's still a lot to come. "We have to keep our feet on the ground and continue to play the game we want to play, keep our football as simple as we can and play in a positive mood. "That's what the boys do and they can do better. They are not inhibited. There is quality in this team and they are good to watch. "For a long time we needed to adjust to the Premiership to find confidence. The win against Real Madrid may have helped us." The second leg is scheduled for next Wednesday, April 5, at the Stadio della Alpi in Turin. http://www.soccerway.com/news/2006/march/2...job-in-juventus for liverpool fans, mukhang balik na ang glory days ng liverpool once magkaroon na sila ng financial backer.. ang yabang din tlga ni arsene wenger hehehehe...
