i guess Phantom would be properly classified as a modern musical.

As opposed to a straight classical opera where the soprano sings pure classical music.

Take for example Turandot. If you have heard of Nessun Dorma, you would notice it is a bit different from the songs of Broadway musicals.

The Phantom was named such because, as we all know, the setting was in an opera house.

Undoubtedly it is one of the best musicals ever. As they say, if you have only 1 chance in your life to see a musical, then Phantom it is :)

"Phantom of the Opera" is not considered a serious opera work. Strictly speaking, it is a Broadway musical.

agree

Magaganda ang mga choices sa opera part ng program ah. Medyo "gasgas" na actually para sa mga tunay na enthusiasts ng classical music, pero ma-appeal para sa mga baguhan pa lang.

Yes I guess the choices were based on popularity :)

The more popular and "gasgas", the more appeal to the crowd of course :)

And it wasn't a choosy crowd. Not exactly "masa", but mostly oldies. My crowd

I am not an expert on operas, and I do not know them by heart, but I enjoyed the whole thing nevertheless.

It was my first time to watch the Rush Hour Concert Series, and it was their last for the year.

Hope I can watch more of that next year :)

Any work by Niccolo Paganini and Vivaldi. I like classical music on strings. Duets, trios, quartets and quintet on strings.

I rarely like symphonies but I like the famous Symphony No. 9's fourth movement of Beethoven. It sorta sounds like the triumph of men, especially the climactic part.

O Fortuna (O Fortune)

velut luna (like the moon)

statu variabilis (you are changeable)

semper crescis (ever waxing)

aut decrescis; (and waning;)

vita detestabilis (hateful life)

nunc obdurat (first oppresses)

et tunc curat (and then soothes)

ludo mentis aciem, (as fancy takes it)

egestatem, (poverty)

potestatem (and power)

dissolvit ut glaciem.(it melts them like ice.)

Sors immanis (Fate - monstrous)

et inanis, (and empty)

rota tu volubilis, (you whirling wheel)

status malus, (you are malevolent)

vana salus (well-being is vain)

semper dissolubilis, (and always fades to nothing)

obumbrata (shadowed)

et velata (and veiled)

mihi quoque niteris; (you plague me too;)

nunc per ludum (now through the game)

dorsum nudum (I bring my bare back)

fero tui sceleris. (to your villainy.)

Sors salutis (Fate is against me)

et virtutis (in health)

michi nunc contraria, (and virtue)

est affectus (driven on)

et defectus (and weighted down)

semper in angaria. (always enslaved.)

Hac in hora (So at this hour)

sine mora (without delay)

corde pulsum tangite; (pluck the vibrating strings;)

quod per sortem (since Fate)

sternit fortem, (strikes down the strong)

mecum omnes plangite! (everyone weep with me!)
