belisarius
^that's right! you obviously read the book. as a private/sgt. in korea, he joined the turkish contingent and his exploits were legendary. the turkish sultan awarded him with the highest military award from his country. his war in vietnam ended badly but it doesn't remove anything from the man. Dr_PepPeR
W.E.B. Griffin has written many fine series of books about the US Army (Brotherhood of War), the USMC (The Corps), the OSS, and even the police department. For sci-fi type war setting, try David Weber's Honor Harrington series ... it's like reading Horatio Hornblower set in the future. Among the Sci-Fi military authors, my favorites are David Drake's Falkenberg series and Jerry Pournelle's Janissaries series. The alternate histories by Harry Turtledove are very very good too. Ahhh that one I haven't seen yet. Sometimes it is just too difficult to find good books here. Time to visit Amazon.com again. Another series I enjoyed reading was Fred Saberhagen's Berserker series. Another series I enjoyed reading was Fred Saberhagen's Berserker series.Yes, I like Saberhagen's Berserker Stories, especially the short story "Wings out of Shadow".I've often wondered if there could be a crossover between the Berserker Universe and Keith Laumer's "Bolo" series.. Thanks for reminding me about Keith Laumer's Bolo series. I remember reading his short stories on this and it's worth going over them again. Quote Link to comment
paeng
I recommend John Keegan, especially The Face of Battle, The Mask of Command, and History of Warfare. Also, Cassell's World History of Warfare. Quote Link to comment
Headroom
Did anyone ever read the Commando War Comics? Quote Link to comment
ken_2_10_nah
I recommend John Keegan, especially The Face of Battle, The Mask of Command, and History of Warfare. Also, Cassell's World History of Warfare. I like Sir John Keegan's (knighted in 2000) work very much as well. Recently, he has come under criticism for his anti-Clausewitzian attitude, which he probably inherited from Basil Lidell Hart. I also recommend Sir Max Hastings (Warriors, Overlord) and Antony Beevor (Stalingrad). Hastings and Keegan are good friends and Beevor was Keegan's student at Sandhurst. Quote Link to comment
paeng
I always wanted to see a military history club formed in the Philippines. The group can meet monthly to swap or talk about books, documentaries, films, literature, etc., about military history, have film or documentary viewings, etc. Between months they can go to a website which has a forum, announcements, and so on. paeng
I read from van Crefeld that the Clausewitzian view is now being put into question by contemporary wars. Another series I enjoyed reading was Fred Saberhagen's Berserker series. if you guys read ebooks, check out the links on my site for sci-fi and fantasy books from baen....you can get book for the honor harrington and belisarius series (except for the latest ones), all free and legal. Yes, I like Saberhagen's Berserker Stories, especially the short story "Wings out of Shadow".I've often wondered if there could be a crossover between the Berserker Universe and Keith Laumer's "Bolo" series.. ineresting, but rendered academic by the fact that in the berserker universe, any AI were "put to death", and all research on them was scrapped... and a rouge BOLO is as bad as a berserker lander anyway Quote Link to comment
