Pc's Open 24/7

Recommended Posts

how about for laptops? I noticed nag oautomatic shutdown minsan ang laptop.. nagoverheat kaya yun pag ganun..

yes...laptops overheat.. just dont leave them running for a very long time.unless u have a cooling pad underneath. but sometimes cooling pad is no use here in p.i. bec its so hot..if u dont have a/c, make sure it gets hit by your regular electric fan.

oh and one more thing, incline your laptop, dont just let it sit on the top. bec it traps the heat..

I was first using a dell latitude laptop for downloading torrent movies and I have left it on for 24/7 (with power save mode o the monitor) continuously with a rest period of one hour every week. I have never experienced any automatic shutdown due to overheating. I have jut elevated it from the table so that air can freely circulate in its underside.

I then transferred the task of downloading to my trustworthy Dell Pentium 3 desktop PC. This also was my workhorse for downloading and for watching downloaded movies and music center for 24/7. This is a very heavy duty PC if I may say. I even upgraded it with a DVD ROM Drive and an Audigy Soundcard.

Unfortunately I have sold this already.

I am now breaking in a C2D E6320 (stock fan ) desktop PC in a dual CRT monitor set up with generic PSU and 7300 GT OC video card. It has been running for 4 days now non stop and I’ll try to monitor the performance of this PC. I used it for some hours of gaming also (Half Life and LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth) It has 2 small exhaust fans and some cathode lights inside and I placed it in a ventilated area.

I suspect that the generic PSU that is bundled with the casing will be the first to go kaput and I have to invest in a good quality PSU.

I’m here in KSA by the way.

I agree with the observation that 24/7 operation is not an issue for properly made computers. The bargain priced units most people buy are use components put together on the basis of price with some influence on what kind of componentry the buyer wants never in terms of matched capabilities so I believe these things are really just for schoolboys--not to be trusted in a crunch time environment.

I have machnes that have been on for almost three years without a hiccup. Of course this is a server and they were designed for this kind of duty (Apple XServe G4) but I do have an iMac that has been on for ov er a year and a Mac Pro that has been one for almost 3 months since delivery.

I don't like turning computers off especially in high humidity situations where the AC is turned off in the evening. I find that under the right conditions, condensation will form if your computer does not produce any heat. Better to keep it on while under warranty, and then keep it on some more for two more years under extended warranty like AppleCare then sell the darn things for book value when fully depreciated and replace with newer models.
