ALL-FANTASY TEAM

POINT GUARD

1st Chair: Gilbert Arenas

2nd Chair: Dwyane Wade

Skinny: Arenas has been the best of a top-heavy group of point guards. He is averaging a career-high 29.3 points per game on 45 percent shooting, 2.5 threes, 6.1 assists, and 2.0 steals while making 82 percent of 9.9 free throws per game. His only downside is that he is leading the league in turnovers. Wade's lack of a three-point shot is the only thing keeping him from the top spot.

SHOOTING GUARD

1st Chair: Kobe Bryant

2nd Chair: Ray Allen

Skinny: Bryant is tops in the league at 35.4 points per game, has made 85 percent of 10.3 free throws per game, and has averages of 2.2 threes, 5.3 boards, 4.5 assists, and 1.8 steals. While his rebounds and assists declined from last season, so did his turnovers. Allen single-handedly pushed fantasy owners to the top in three-point (3.4 per game) and free-throw categories (91 percent) while averaging a career-high 25.0 points per game.

SMALL FORWARD

1st Chair: LeBron James

2nd Chair: Paul Pierce

Skinny: James' fantasy line speaks for itself, with averages of 31.4 points on 48 percent shooting, 1.6 threes, 7.0 rebounds, 6.6 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.8 blocks. How much better will he be next season? The only flaw in his fantasy game is his free-throw shooting, especially given the volume of shots that he takes. Pierce has put together his best overall fantasy season without a lot of fanfare.

POWER FORWARD

1st Chair: Shawn Marion

2nd Chair: Elton Brand

Skinny: It's hard to believe that it's possible, but Marion actually improved this season, posting the best fantasy numbers of his career. He's averaging career-highs in points (21.7), field goal percentage (52 percent), rebounds (11.9), and blocks (1.7), to go along with 1.2 threes, 2.0 steals, 82 percent free-throw shooting, and only 1.5 turnovers. Brand and Kevin Garnett posted equally impressive seasons, but KG loses out to Brand given the fact that he's missed the most important weeks of the season.

CENTER

1st Chair: Rasheed Wallace

2nd Chair: Chris Bosh

Skinny: While it's true that Wallace's shooting percentages leave much to be desired, his 15.2 points, 2.0 threes, 6.9 boards, 1.6 blocks, and 1.0 steals are a godsend at the Center position. His durability, particularly given the plethora of centers that missed games this year, also shouldn't be underestimated. Bosh made serious strides this season on offense, but the digression of his defensive numbers and his untimely injury make him the runner-up.

ROOKIE

1st Chair: Chris Paul

2nd Chair: Charlie Villanueva

Skinny: Surprise, surprise – Paul was one of the top fantasy players in the game, let alone just among rookies. He has posted averages of 16.3 points, 7.9 assists, 5.2 boards, 2.2 steals, and 85 percent free-throw shooting. Paul will be drafted among the top 20 players next season. Villanueva actually was a bit of a surprise. Despite some inconsistency, he emerged as an across-the-board contributor and a fantasy steal.

BUST

1st Chair: Tracy McGrady

2nd Chair: Stephon Marbury

Skinny: McGrady was a top 10 pick as usual this season, but he dealt with knee issues early and back pain often throughout a hugely disappointing season. He spent six separate instances on the inactive list and played a total of 47 games, with rebounds being the only stat of the nine default categories where his numbers did not take a dip from last season. Marbury's statistics are arguably his worst as a pro, and he's played in just 60 games.

BREAKOUT

1st Chair: Boris Diaw

2nd Chair: David West

Skinny: Diaw has become the most versatile player in fantasy basketball, lacking only point-guard eligibility. He has also put together one of the most balanced stat lines in the game, with averages of 13.4 points on 53 percent shooting, 6.9 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 1.1 blocks, and 0.7 steals. While he won't be a secret next season, it remains to be seen how the return of Amare Stoudemire and Kurt Thomas affect his role and his nightly line. West has been fantastic in his first season as a starter, and 17.1 points, 7.4 boards, and solid percentages from a free agent claim go a long ways towards a fantasy crown.

Rookie Class: Honor Roll

June 30, 2006

The dust has settled from the NBA draft, and rosters appear to be settled for the moment. Let's take a look at players who figure to make a fantasy impact next season, and try to gauge just how large that impact will be.

Rudy Gay, SF, Memphis

Gay should start for the Grizzlies at small forward in place of Shane Battier and post good overall numbers. You know the story by now – Gay has all-world talent; it just comes down to a question of whether or not he completely harnesses it. Gay's first fantasy season should rival Andre Iguodala's 05-06 campaign, but he'll certainly block more shots and has the potential to score more points, as well. Gay is one rookie who could end up performing well above his average draft position next season.

Adam Morrison, SF, Charlotte

Morrison steps into a great situation in Charlotte. He becomes the team's primary perimeter threat, and Gerald Wallace can help compensate for his defensive deficiencies by manning up on the more difficult match-up at shooting guard or small forward. Take a look at Wally Szczerbiak's offensive production last season (with free-throw shooting closer to 80 percent) as a likely parallel for Morrison's rookie campaign.

Brandon Roy, SG, Portland

Roy will step in immediately and play a large role in the Blazers backcourt. He will likely play both point guard and shooting guard and see more minutes than any other Blazers guard in the rotation. Roy can score, shoot, rebound, pass, and defend – none of his skills particularly stand out, but it's difficult to name a true deficiency in his game. Take a look at Delonte West's per-game production last year, add a few points to his scoring average, and you have what Roy appears to be capable of from the get-go.

Randy Foye, SG, Minnesota

The Wolves could end up starting Foye at point guard or playing him at both guard positions, but he will surely be a full-time player from the outset either way. While Foye has considerable skills, he has typically shown the ability to create a shot for himself more so than for others. With Kevin Garnett and Ricky Davis already on the roster, however, he wouldn't be asked to play the role of a pure point guard. While his exact role has yet to be mapped out, don't doubt that he will make a fantasy impact. Foye could be headed for production in the mold of Cuttino Mobley or Manu Ginobili from last season.

Shelden Williams, PF, Atlanta

Let's assume the best-case scenario for Williams as a fantasy player – where Al Harrington doesn't return to the Hawks and Marvin Williams remains not quite ready for prime-time – does come to fruition. Shelden Williams is NBA-ready as a rebounder and defender, and his offense initially should be adequate. Emeka Okafor's 05-06 season with a much better field-goal percentage is not out of reach.

Ronnie Brewer, SG, Utah

Brewer should start for the Jazz from day one, as he is undoubtedly already a more effective player than Gordan Giricek or Devin Brown. He does just about everything well, and has skills that range from being able to handle the point on occasion to defending the opposition's small forward. Brewer's year-one stats could be in the area of what Eddie Jones and Smush Parker produced this past season.

LaMarcus Aldridge, PF, Portland

Aldridge's production next season is difficult to prognosticate at this point. As is stands, he will be competing with Zach Randolph, Raef LaFrentz and Brian Skinner for minutes. Joel Przybilla's free agency is a wild-card in the competition. Of course, his role will also depend on whether or not Blazers coach Nate McMillan feels that he can play both frontcourt positions, as well. Following the draft, McMillan called him "really raw" and noted that "he needs to gain more weight," but also said that he'd need to see him compete in practice before he drew any more conclusions. My initial estimate for Aldridge's 06-07 campaign is roughly what Chris Mihm accomplished last season, but things could change.

Tyrus Thomas, PF, Chicago

Thomas and upside go together like peas and carrots. That upside is a few years away from being realized, however. He's joined a Bulls team with lots of bodies at power forward, and while less talent exists, more body exists – as a reference, Thomas is currently listed as the same weight as Eric Piatkowski. He'll have his moments, but also inconsistencies. Somewhere between last year's per-game production from Kendrick Perkins and Tyson Chandler should be the expectation for Thomas' first season.

Josh Boone, FC, New Jersey

Boone should see steady minutes immediately, and could even crack the starting lineup if he shows enough leading up to the season. This pick was a bit of a reach considering that Boone was not overly impressive as a junior, and actually appeared to regress. He is worth keeping track of as he has shown the ability to block shots and rebound, and the power forward position in New Jersey could be his to lose. The Brendan Haywood of 05-06 could be who Boone channels next season for fantasy production.

J.J. Redick, SG, Orlando

Redick will suit up for the Magic, where his specific skills will fit a specific need – there isn't a lot of mystery here. Redick won't see the lion's share of minutes, but should be called on enough to make him fantasy relevant in deep leagues as a three-point specialist. Expect Redick's numbers next year to be in the neighborhood of Eddie House's from last season (but raise the free-throw percentage to somewhere near 90 percent).

I know that Ginobili is injury prone and all, but Foye having his numbers? post-2642-1125234621.gif

Do you guys think we could accomodate 16? Or we should stick with 14 teams?

*Is it that obvious I'm excited?

I think 14's gonna max it out.

If we go to 16 or 20, even the veritable bench guys will gain value. But at any rate, if we do go beyond 14, I think it might be best to limit the categories to the bare bones i.e. none of the percentage stats just pts-rebs-asts-stls-blks.

I know, this will definitely favor the stars and volume shooters but it somehow evens things up since players having awful games end up getting penalized only once.

In our past scoring system, Dirk scoring 14 pts off 5/20 from the field kills the team on both pts and fg% making it more difficult for the owner to regain lost ground.

This would also increase the value of bench guys since they wouldn't have to shoot particularly well to make an impact: their stats are as is and they will help their team the same way by scoring 8 off 4/8 or 8 from 4/10.

But really, just my 2 cents in case we do end up going for a 16 to 20 team super league.

p.s.

We could host a tourney for the wannabes so we could determine which cats are dead-on serious about joining our games.

The biggest letdown is when all managers are in and for whatever reason, some dude calls it quits by midseason.

Anong kaguluhan to? He he, ang aga aga pa eh, wala pang registration:-) kakainip nga, buti na lang may baseball pa kahit paano may napaglilibangan.

IMHO, 14 teams max but even then we should lessen the roster size (number of players) from last year. I have been a part of an 18 or 20 team league at hindi masaya kasi masyado ng diluted ang liga:-)

Hey I like that idea. Commish could create an MTC Fantasy NBA Development League, the champion of that would join in the main NBA Fantasy League for next season. Harharhar.

Commish, mas maganda magdiskusyon na tayo about the stats and teams and all, para wala ng rule changes in midseason. :D

I propose 65 max moves only. B)

12 lang tayo last year di ba? I think 14 could be the best number.
