pussyeater69ph
Pacquiao immortalized with postage stamp Manny Pacquiao can now really say that he is an icon -- on and off the boxing ring. Late last week, the Philippine Postal Service (Philpost) came up with a special issue stamp bearing depicting Pacquiao, the first athlete to be honored as such by the agency. Philboxing.com reported that the Pacquiao stamp is the first in a series of special stamps of Filipino sports heroes. The series is under Philpost's "Kaya ng Pinoy" project. It was learned that Pacquiao agreed to the Philpost proposal to help continue restoring "international respect for the Philippines through his amazing exploits in the ring." According to Philpost chief and postmaster general Hector Villanueva, Pacquiao deserves the honor. "[He] really deserves this because no other Filipino boxer has achieved what he accomplished. He's been a world champion for more than four years now and his feats are still growing," the official said. Pacquiao, meanwhile, said that it is an honor for him to be featured in a stamp along with other great heroes in Philippine history. Pacquiao's last fight was on March 15 when he grabbed the WBC super featherweight crown from Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez. The "Pacman" is next scheduled to clash with Mexican-American fighter David Diaz on June 28 for the WBC lightweight belt. Meanwhile, aside from Pacquiao, other boxing heroes slated to be showcased in Philpost's "Kaya ng Pinoy" project are Hall-of-Famer Gabriel "Flash Elorde" and the Philippines' first world champion, Pancho Villa. Philpost previously released a special issue stamp honoring the 25th anniversary of the Philippine Basketball Association, Asia's first professional league. Quote Link to comment
pussyeater69ph
Roach takes Ortiz as Pacquiao sparmate Coach Freddie Roach is taking no chances as he sets a heavier sparring mate against Manny Pacquiao for the June 28 challenge against WBC lightweight champ David Diaz in Las Vegas, Nevada, an online news report said Tuesday. FightFan.com said that Roach has enlisted the services of 140-lb Victor Ortiz as one of Pacquiao's sparmates. Roach said that he believes Ortiz, touted as bigger and stronger than Diaz, will fit the bill in preparation for the WBC super featherweight king's ascent to the 135-lb division. In addition to Ortiz, Roach said that former world champ Freddie Norwood may also be enlisted to do practice sessions with Pacquiao. According to Roach, Pacquiao is set to arrive at the Wild Card gym in Hollywood, California for training on May 10. At present, the "Pacman" is continuing training sessions in his native General Santos City in the Philippines. Pacquiao's last fight on March 15 this year earned him the WBC super featherweight crown held by Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico. Quote Link to comment
pussyeater69ph
Pacquiao set to face Diaz in June showdown of champions LAS VEGAS, Nevada - World Boxing Council super featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao expects the toughest fight of his career June 28 when he moves up in weight to face WBC lightweight champion David Diaz. The 29-year-old Philippine legend could complete a quest to capture five world titles in as many weight classes when he fights the 31-year-old American for the lightweight crown in a showdown of southpaws. "This will be my hardest-fought battle," Pacquiao said. "It has been over three years since I have changed weight divisions and I will be doing it against the lightweight division's world champion. "But this is my drive for five world titles in five different weight classes and I will not be denied. I am fighting for history, for destiny and for the people of the Philippines." Diaz, 34-1-1 with 17 knockouts, makes the second defense of his title after taking a unanimous decision over Mexican star Erik Morales last August. "I will shock the world and beat Pacquiao at his own game, power for power. He's a great champion but he's fighting in my division. I have worked too hard for this world title and I will not give it up to him." Pacquiao, 46-3 with two drawn and 34 knockouts, plans on taking it anyway. "I saw how he took the fight to Erik Morales in his last title defense and I am expecting to see the same fire power out of him when we meet," Pacquiao said. Pacquiao won titles at flyweight, super bantamweight, featherweight and added super featherweight to that list in March with a split-decision victory over Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao avenged an earlier controversial draw against Marquez and added him to the list of vanquished top Mexican fighters, a group including Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Oscar Larios and Jorge Solis. "Manny Pacquiao has beaten many great fighters, especially Mexicans. That's why they call him 'The Mexicutioner,'" Diaz said. Quote Link to comment
pussyeater69ph
Trainer tells Pacquiao: Don't be overconfident By RONNIE NATHANIELSZ Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao’s childhood friend and trainer, Restituto “Buboy” Fernandez, cautioned him “not to be overconfident” in his WBC lightweight title fight against champion David Diaz on June 28 in Las Vegas, Nevada. After a final workout in Mandaluyong City before leaving for Los Angeles, California last Monday, Fernandez told Viva Sports that Diaz was “strong and had a hammer-like blow that came from a distance." Fernandez who said he had been studying the tapes of Diaz’ previous fights on his laptop every night said that the lightweight champ was “really strong and even if you drop him, he gets up.” He also warned that Pacquiao “must be careful because there’s a punch he (Diaz) throws that you don’t see.” While admitting that Pacquiao, the WBC super featherweight champion, has a decided advantage in speed because Diaz is somewhat slow, Fernandez noted that “comparative slowness is combined with power and Manny must not allow him (Diaz) to feel confident.” Fernandez said that Pacquiao would have no problem making the 135-pound lightweight limit and that even though he is moving up in weight, he will “carry his power with him.” At the same time, Fernandez said that Pacquiao is a far more intelligent fighter today and that even in training, he “likes working out his own fight plan” and prefers a real war in the ring. He said he is hoping that a nation’s prayers and good luck will smile on Pacquiao and he will become the first Asian to win four world titles. “That’s my prayer,” added Fernandez. pussyeater69ph
Arum plans Pacquiao vs Valero in Macau By RONNIE NATHANIELSZ Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has said that WBA super featherweight champion Edwin Valero “is the next likely opponent” of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao. He, however, was quick to add that “no real negotiations with anybody have started yet.” Arum was speaking to Viva Sports correspondent Romy Sajer during a break in the press and promotional tour stop in Chicago which was highlighted by a pep rally at the Federal Plaza downtown. Even celebrated trainer Freddie Roach mentioned the possibility of a fight against Valero in the burgeoning gambling enclave of Macau which by all accounts has surpassed Las Vegas, with the fight likely to take place in October. Sajer reported that Roach was “brutal, bold and confident” in contrast with Pacquiao and WBC lightweight champion David Diaz, who is aMexican-American and lives in Chicago who were both “cautious gentlemen and overly diplomatic.” Asked about the weaknesses of Diaz, Roach replied, “If he gets hit, plain and simple. I mean anyone Manny Pacquiao can hit, I’m not afraid of.” Reacting to Diaz’s trainer Jim Strickland’s statement that the champion would counter Pacquiao’s three-punch combinations with powerful four-punch combos, a stoic Roach said “after our three-punch combination Diaz may be thrown on the floor. If he wants to exchange with us, I have a better puncher for sure.” Pacquiao, in an exclusive interview with Viva Sports and the Filipino community newspaper in Chicago, was soft-spoken and diplomatic. He said “speed and power” will determine the outcome of the fight. Pacquiao refused to predict the outcome but promised to “do my best to win the fight.” Pacquiao conceded that Diaz “can punch ..pero nakikita ko so kaniya, mas mabilis ako siguro konti. Of course I believe na mas malakas pa ako kesa kaniya.” Diaz was undaunted by the hoopla . Addressing the crowd of Mexican-Americans and Filipino-Americans at the Federal Plaza the champion said, “I know you all came to see me…but this guy (Manny) is pretty good.” Diaz assured the fans: “We’re gonna bring the belt back. We’ve been in this situation before last year. Somebody (Erik Morales) was going for four (titles) again but not anymore.” Exuding confidence Diaz, said a rematch with Pacquiao should be held in his hometown of Chicago, adding “after Chicago, then the Philippines.” In a conversation with Chicago Sun Times reporter Roman Modrowski, the champion who is also a southpaw like Pacquiao predicted: “This is going to be an all-out war. Manny is a straight- forward fighter as am I. We are both going to go at it but the only thing that’s going to happen is I’m going to win.” Quote Link to comment
MrJaydee
I hope that this will turn out to be the slugfest that we are all wanting. Of course, Pacquiao should come out unscathed and victorious to conquer greater heights and humiliate that loudmouth JMM Quote Link to comment

MrJaydee
I hope so. I'm just a bit apprehensive with the change in weight category. This is not his first and the enemies are getting more and more difficult. Quote Link to comment
