Mike Patt vs. Brandon Vera set for UFC 96 in Ohio

by John Morgan on Dec 21, 2008 at 4:40 pm ET

While there have been no officially announced bouts by the organization, light-heavyweights Mike Patt (12-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) and Brandon Vera (9-3 MMA, 5-3 UFC) have verbally agreed to meet at UFC 96.

Sam Caplan of Fiveouncesofpain.com first reported the likelihood of the bout earlier today, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) was able to confirm the agreements with multiple sources close to the bout.

UFC 96 is scheduled for March 7 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

Ohio-native Patt will be looking for his first win in the octagon. The BodogFIGHT veteran made an unsuccessful first appearance for the organization at UFC 88 in September. Patt entered the bout having won eight of his previous nine outings, but was stopped in the first round by Tim Boetsch after taking the fight on less than three week's notice.

Despite the unsuccessful initial outing, Patt told MMAjunkie.com that he hoped to become a permanent fixture in the UFC.

"There are plenty of places to fight, and some guys will tell you how they want to fight here or there," Patt said. "But given the chance, they would all fight for the UFC regardless of what they might say. It validates everything you do as a fighter. I would be very happy to call the UFC home."

Vera will enter the bout looking for just his second win in his past five bouts. After establishing himself as a UFC contender with wins over Frank Mir, Assuerio Silva, Justin Eilers and Fabiano Scherner, Vera would drop his next two bouts to Fabricio Werdum and Tim Sylvia. Those losses prompted Vera to make a cut to 205 pounds.

Vera was victorious in his debut at light-heavyweight over Reese Andy, but lost a close split-decision to Keith Jardine in his most recent bout at UFC 89.

I hope he doesn't disappoint this time...

  2. Sanchez Could Face Stevenson at UFC 95

Sanchez Could Face Stevenson at UFC 95 Diego Sanchez could get a stern test in his first fight at 155 pounds.

The middleweight winner of the first season of Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter” has verbally agreed to face Joe Stevenson at UFC 95 on Feb. 21 at the O2 Arena in London, according to a source close to the New Mexico native. Bout agreements have yet to be signed, however, said the source.

Sanchez, 26, announced his intentions to drop down to the lightweight division in December and will enter his first fight of 2009 on a two-fight win streak. Sanchez (19-2) submitted David Bielkheden at UFC 82 last March and stopped gritty American Top Team standout Luigi Fioravanti with strikes at “The Ultimate Fighter 7” Finale in June.

Sanchez’s only two career losses have come in the welterweight ranks to Josh Koscheck at UFC 69 in April 2007 and Jon Fitch via split decision at UFC 76 in September 2007, shortly after he left lifelong trainer Greg Jackson in Albuquerque, N. M. Sanchez now trains under Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Saulo Ribeiro and Rob Garcia in San Diego.

Stevenson (29-9), who won TUF’s second season at welterweight, has dropped two of his last three bouts. The former King of the Cage and Gladiator Challenge champion succumbed to a second-round rear-naked choke at the hands of lightweight champion B.J. Penn at UFC 80 last January in Newcastle, England, and was submitted with the same maneuver by Kenny Florian at UFC 91 in November. The 26-year-old ground fighter has gone 6-3 in the Octagon.

it will be another tough fight for joe stevenson...

  3. Maybe it's time for Nover to change camps. I know he has loyalty with Team Insight but there are so many better (bigger) camps out there where he should be training with the best fighters and who has experience in preparing for a UFC fight just like what Junie Browning did when he trained at Extreme Couteur.

  4. ^no doubt he will be bigger than Vera. He has the attitude that will make him become a prize fighter. He trains hard and hates losing. I'm sure he'll learn a lot from this loss. Kontrapelo lang talaga yung style ng kalaban.

  5. ^mann... that's an ugly break. is this an injury common to muay thai fighters? I've seen it happen a couple of times already. is there a way to avoid this? (of course except for not doing leg kicks) :)

it's the Philippines vs. Mexico again... Nover vs. Escudero! MMA naman ngayon pero sana tayo pa rin manalo. :)

  6. Oo naman! Gina Carano's the Bomb! But the girl in the Pink Gi is Kyra Gracie! Yup female black belt and member of the Famous Graice clan! I Wonder if she will compete in womens MMA soon?! Pre Try to search for Cris "Cyborg" Santos! Mas Hot yun! Hehehe..

    War Nover! :thumbsupsmiley:

Cris Santos...cyborg nga pre! hehehe! i think it's safe to say that Gina and Kyra can "mount" me anytime kung kailangan nila mag practice ng ground and pound. :)

kulit ng mukha ni joe rogan dito :D

  7. spoiler here....

Torres won via T.K.O... man.. he's really one of the best pound for pound. He's one of those guys that you can say is a pure blooded fighter. I can't see him losing his belt for a long time.

  8. Tapia has a big mouth bro, well he's 10-0-1 but with the way he's calling Torres as overrated, he's gonna get KO'ed. i mean dude you don't get to 33-1 by just being overrated.

seriously bro Tapia has good standup as well, but i don't think he poses a significant threat to Torres who i think is the baddest 135lbs dude in MMA plus he's got a significant reach advantage as well.

all in all Torres has a more well-rounded skill set than Tapia.

Torres by TKO in round 3 ^_^

I also think Torres will knock the lights out of Tapia. Torres is one of the best pound for pound. He should move up at lightweight! :)
