The control of the media was 100% during the early days of Martial Law. There was even a time when all TV channels were showing one program entitled "Pulong-pulong sa Kaunlaran".
We Forum was the first opposition newspaper published by Joe Burgos, then Malaya came afterwards. Inquirer came after the assination of Aquino.
Pards, is Joe Burgos still around? Is Jake Macasaet still the publisher of Malaya? I used to see Jake Macasaet around our old neighborhood jogging in the mornings.

Dearest C,
"Our Love Is Here To Stay"
(George & Ira Gershwin)
It's very clear
Our love is here to stay ;
Not for a year
But ever and a day.
The radio and the telephone
And the movies that we know
May just be passing fancies,
And in time may go !
But, oh my dear,
Our love is here to stay.
Together we're
Going a long, long way
In time the Rockies may tumble,
Gibralter may crumble,
They're only made of clay,
But our love is here to stay.

wow pare you sure were a devout music fan in the 70's. Except for two or three, I guess you have been able to identify all those acts that went into oblivion after one hit
Al Green is a great soul singer - though he may not have been able to come up with another No. 1 hit, I'm sure most of his songs received critical acclaim.
Minnie Riperton may not have been able to follow up Lovin' You because I believe she died early from cancer.
I noticed wala sa listahan yung Black Betty by Ramjam - baka 80's ito. It was a very big hit like My Sharona, after which nothing was heard from Ramjam anymore
Thanks, Pards. As a kid, I was very close to my cousins and so their musical tastes had a huge influence on me. Kaya I'm quite a big fan of 60s and 70s music.
Pards, you're right about Ramjam. My cousin had their album that had that song "Black Betty" on it. I think 1978 lumabas iyon or early 1979. It was a 70s hit.

Just Like Heaven
by: The Cure
"Show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream" she said
"The one that makes me laugh" she said
And threw her arms around my neck
"Show me how you do it
And I promise you I promise that
I'll run away with you
I'll run away with you"
Spinning on that dizzy edge
I kissed her face and kissed her head
And dreamed of all the different ways I had
To make her glow
"Why are you so far away?" she said
"Why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you
That I'm in love with you"
You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Strange as angels
Dancing in the deepest oceans
Twisting in the water
You're just like a dream
Daylight licked me into shape
I must have been asleep for days
And moving lips to breathe her name
I opened up my eyes
And found myself alone alone
Alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved
And drowned her deep inside of me
You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Just like heaven

Mga pare let's go back to Mandrake's listing of 70's Number 1 hits.
Identify as many one-hit wonders there.
example: Starland Vocal Band - I don't think they came up with another hit, or another song for that matter. After Afternoon Delight they faded into the drug-addled haze of the 70's

yup Alex Magno, along with Chit Pedrosa, are still the resident Gloria apologists in The Star
Daily Express - that was the reigning Marcos apologist paper in the 70's....
Yup, the supposed "leading" (they were leading because there no competent alternative was allowed to exist) dailies during the 70s were the ones owned and controlled by Marcos cronies: :thumbsdownsmiley:

Say what you want about that game against the Spurs but...
MAN, DID YOU SEE NACHBAR THROW IT DOWN OVER DUNCAN?!!!
Yes, I did. And that's why I'm agreeable to letting Vince and RJ go because of a very capable player like Nachbar. He deserves to be in the starting lineup. Once Krstic gets back at Center and with Nachbar at Power Forward, it would be a formidable and reliable combination supporting J Kidd! :thumbsupsmiley:

Lawrence Frank is actually the epitome of a typical Eastern Conference coach:
They may be good but they are never that intimidating threat in the bench. They are the kind of coaches Phil Jackson doesn't lose sleep thinking how he could outcoach him. Hell, Eric Musselman ain't worried that much!
Frank, is actually not too shabby. However, he is not yet ready to go head-on coaching wise in the league.
The Nets have dropped in the playoff race due to 5 straight losses. I think they're now in the 10th spot.
I fervently hope they replace Lawrence Frank after this season. The Nets need a respected coach who actually played basketball. Frank is no Van Gundy either. Jason Collins also needs to get the boot. I strongly believe Kidd should be kept as he is the team's leader. I'm not too crazy about keeping either Vince or RJ, since both are very capable of bonehead plays at critical stretches in games. RJ is just way oo prone to committing turnovers IMHO.

Fred,
Didn't realize that a pleasant surprise was in store for me when you called me into your office this past Thursday. Though I may not have agreed with some of your past decisions, I admire the very high degree of professionalism you displayed. I must say that you've been very good to me and that the company's been very good to me. Thank you very much for your and the directors' votes of confidence in me. I'll do my very best in my new position. Thanks again.

Together with Leila Benitez, Eddie Ilarde and Bobby Ledesma they made up the longest running
noontime show in the 60s and early 70s---STUDENT CANTEEN. :mtc:
To this day, I still think that Student Canteen's "IQ 7" Quiz Contest was the best quiz contest on Philippine television. :thumbsupsmiley:
I also liked the fact that at the start of each show, they presented a "word of the day" and a "thought of the day". This program did its part in uplifting our culture, intelligence, and taste. It's just too bad that we haven't had a show with such a format and class ever since.

70s peeps, let's have an eb on Friday. I'll attend an art opening at Gallery Astra, 3f LRI bldg, in Reposo, Makati.
In the 70s, art was booming courtesy of the Imelda and her blue ladies.
Yup, that's so true. She was a patron of the arts, or at least, she tried to be. I'm not sure if it was in the 70s or maybe it was in the early 80s na when the National Arts Center in Mount Makiling was inaugurated. Van Cliburn, the pianist and one of Imelda's friends, even graced the occasion.

Ok. Question is, can they get a better player than Collins? s in someone who actually plays basketball?
Good question. The person does not have to be a very good scorer pero the person should be an intimidating presence in the low post in terms of defense, fighting for the ball, and rebounding (both offensive and defensive). Collins has decided to just focus on defense. This guy used to be a decent freethrow shooter and used to have a decent midrange jumper. Both skills have deteriorated to the point that it's become obvious, he no longer has the confidence to attempt any shots. :thumbsdownsmiley:
About Lawrence Frank:
Last night's game against Philadelphia was another example of Frank relying too much on Carter for his offense or to pull the team out of tight spots. It was obvious early on that Carter was not having a good game. His FG percentage was an awful 20%. And yet, Frank only decided to yank Carter out of the game with just 3+ minutes left in the 4th period. By that time, the Nets were already down by 12 points. It took him THAT LONG to decide that Carter was not really being a factor offensively. House and Nachbar played very well last night and Frank should have stuck with them longer. :thumbsdownsmiley:

On the question as to why Lawrence Frank sticks to having Jason Collins on the starting lineup, the following Q&A with Ian Eagle (Nets Broadcaster) on Yesnetwork.com reveals the philosophy behind it:
Ian,Why is Lawrence Frank sticking with a starting lineup consisting of Jason Collins and Antoine Wright? Isn't it about time Frank rewarded Bostjan Nachbar by giving him the starting job?
— Harold Wasserman
Harold,
Coach Frank's philosophy is why weaken two areas of your team (starting 5 and bench) by putting Nachbar in the starting lineup. If you start Boki instead of Antoine Wright or Hassan Adams at the small forward position, your bench scoring takes a major hit. Anyone watching the Nets these days knows that Nachbar has earned his way into the starting lineup, but once Jefferson returns, Boki would head back to the bench anyway. Coach Frank doesn't want to keep changing Nachbar's role on this team. He has been successful in reserve duty and the coaches can lean on him to provide 'instant offense' for that second unit. Nachbar is finally looking like the player the Rockets selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2002 draft and the trade deadline deal the Nets made last year with the Hornets is looking better every day.

^ Yes, I do know that but do the Atlantic Division deserve two teams in the playoffs?
Sorry I misunderstood your question. It doesn't really deserve 2 teams pero it just goes to show how weak the Eastern Conference is when compared to the West. I had expected Miami to top the Atlantic Division but with injuries to Wade and the underachieving Nets, who would have thought that the Raptors would be leading the division at this stage? It's just awful right now. Not a lot of teams are playing good basketball right now in both the Central and Atlantic divisions.
-
Hmm...
Could there be two playoff teams (Toronto and New Jersey) from the Atlantic Division?
Yup, puwede iyan because 8 teams from the Eastern Conference will be battling each other out in the playoffs. Same with the Western Conference.

NETS outshot WIZARDS 113-101
Our New Jersey nets set a franchise record by sinking 16 three-pointers! :thumbsupsmiley: NET-King Jason Kidd made 6 of those in only 10 attempts!
That's a three-game winning streak now!!! Yahooo!
GO GO NETS!!!
Hopefully maging 4-straight sa Sabado when they go up against the Celtics.

^ I agree...
Speaking of Mikki Moore... Man, did he just wake up and became a betetr player!
As for Jason Collins, I hope he is a good teammate and great with the community coz there is no way he should be in the League with that talent (or lack thereof)...
I agree. Mikki's having a banner year. I hope the Nets offer him a multi-year deal. Same with Nachbar. Nachbar is never afraid to attack the basket and go for a dunk. :thumbsupsmiley: Unfortunately, the same thing cannot be said about Collins. Nasa harap na ng basket, hindi pa ida-dunk and worse, pag nag-attempt e hindi pa pumapasok ang bola. 7 footer pa kunwari itong hayup na 'to. :thumbsdownsmiley:
I also like Eddie House because he can come off the bench and immediately contribute to the team whether in offense (his shooting) or in defense (his quickness). IMHO, this is the best bench that the Nets have had in years.
djlo Posted Yesterday, 08:53 PMwell I just wish that the trade wont push thru, that so dead wrong! JAY-Z has to make up some decision or should i say influence it. HEHEHEHE!!!!!!!!!!!

He would thrive in Nellieball.
I'm not sure if the Nets organization would still have Lawrence Frank next season. After all, coaches are usually blamed by the owners and the GM...
They ought to let him go. I give him credit for being a very hard worker but he has a tendency to rely on his starters too much. He only started using Mikki Moore, Marcus Williams, and Bostjan Nachbar once his frontline got depleted with injuries to RJ and Krstic. I'm glad to see that Mikki, Marcus, and Boki are playing so well right now. Jason Collins should not be in the starting rotation. His ineffectiveness on the offensive end is one of the reasons as to why the Nets find themselves in a hole in many of their games. :thumbsdownsmiley:
-
They should convince Vinsanity to a sign-and-trade after the season.
Otherwise he'll simply leave this team with nothing.
Kidd would be dealt to a California team, I feel. It's up to ou to guess if its any of the LA teams, Sacramento or Golden State...
Kidd's an Oakland native. If Golden State makes a play for him, he might just take it to go back home.

out for good na ba si krstic?
and sana, the NJ GM isn't stupid enough to get a package deal with Kwame from LAL for Kidd
Krstic is out for the season. RJ is out for about 6 weeks.
If Thorn trades Kidd for Kwame Brown, then isara na nila ang Nets. :thumbsdownsmiley:

NETS bow to the SPURS 107-82...
How I'd love to see my NETS win one against Tony Parker and co!
Anyway, I'm not expecting us to win this one. Even if it's a home game... our team is too depleted at this time to become a threat against powerhouses like San Antonio.
NO RJ... NO KRSTIC... NO KIDD... >sigh!< what can we expect?
I'm just disappointed because I believe the NETS could've put up a better fight than that. We were outscored 33-16 in the second quarter and that sealed our doom.
I'm beginning to take young Marcus Williams seriously. Taking over the starting point guard position from Kidd, he tallied 9 points and dished out 10 dimes (career-high)! The 3rd straight game he's stepped up his game. Keep it up, dude! :thumbsupsmiley:
Let's hope they perform better against the HORNETS!
Trading deadline passed by and the Nets still have Jason Collins. :thumbsdownsmiley: It's probably because they know that no team in its right mind would take this guy.
I wasn't in favor of trading Kidd although I strongly agree with you that Marcus Williams is starting to shine. :thumbsupsmiley: This kid deserves more playing time. Jason Collins should be taken out of the starting rotation because his ineffectiveness makes their games more difficult to win. He is a drag on their offense. The opposing team could pretty much focus on the other 4 players because they know they can let Jason Collins take his shots with a low probability of making them. :thumbsdownsmiley:

Ok Bods, waiting for Storm's text on our EB sked. Looks like next week na. Actually, Intramuros still teems with squatters. Sayang, this part of Manila could have been cleaned up and made into walk-through tourist destination. There's so much history steeped here. What I really miss is the old Countrybake Shop and the drive-in A&W resto on UN Avenue. I recently walked along Mabini, where the first Dulconea was established, and M.H del Pilar checking out the antique and curio shops and was disappointed that many houses and old apartments have either been demolished or are in dire need of repairs. The old Hotel Otani on T.M Kalaw looks like it has been gutted.
My parents' wedding cake came from Countrybake Shop. Unfortunately, I never got to visit that place when it was still around.
I also remember the Hotel Otani from back in the 70s when we used to frequent the Luneta. I remember that there was a plaque by its main entrance marking the fact that Rizal stayed in the hotel either in the late 1880s or early 1890s. It's unfortunate that heritage conservation ranks low in the government's priorities. I won't be surprised if this hotel gets demolished soon and be lost to us forever.

Nung 70s, squatters area na ito corner Espana Ext. & Araneta Ave.
Recently, mukhang may expansion na naman...notice the banner.
Sino developer nito, Ayala ba o Megaworld?
Para hindi OT, squatting became a problem in Manila after the devastation wrought by World War 2. The squatters' presence grew over the next few decades as successive administrations tried and failed to reduce the poverty levels in the country. They grew to the point that Imeldific tried to hide them behind whitewashed walls and away from foreigners' eyes in the 70s through her "Beautification" campaign. :thumbsdownsmiley:
