  1. ^^^ Very nice write-up, Pareng Boomouse. It sure brought back a lot of memories of places around Metro Manila.

Is the Gregg Store in San Juan still around? I do remember that place along N. Domingo.

I remember the bus lines you mentioned along with the nicknames people gave them such as JD (Judas-Driven) Transit and DM (Demonyo Mag-maneho) Transit. Another example of lawanit-framed buses was the Marikina Auto Line. I also remember the day I first rode on an airconditioned Love Bus.

  2. Mike,

You don't seem to realize that you are one overpaid, f#&king son-of-a-bitch! You don't deserve where you are, you lousy prick! You are only there because you were a patronage hire. You don't have any credibility at all with the staff because you refuse to get your hands dirty with real, honest-to-goodness work. You always weasel your way out of tough spots. If you even try to do some work, the quality isn't up to snuff. There's no gas in your f#&king oven! I feel sorry for your kids for having such an idiot of a dad.

I am also amazed at your hypocrisy. You claim to be a regular, churchgoing, Knights of Columbus guy and yet you're the tops when it comes to self-preservation. You and your kind can go to hell! There's way too many of you in Church and it's such disgraceful behavior from church members like you that has turned millions of people off!

  3. thanks pare!

I actually saw Star Trek Seasons 1-3 here in Metrowalk - planning to buy it next time and I will also look for the others pero parang wala. Would you also know if Mission Impossible - the original TV series with Peter Graves and Martin Landau has been released as a video collection? Ito rin ang gusto kong mapanuod uli...

Yes, that has been released too. The first 3 seasons of the Mission Impossible TV series are now available. I just found out too na wala pala si Peter Graves (Jim Phelps) sa first season of this series. :boo: Steven Hill (used to be of Law and Order) played the role of Dan Riggs, the leader of IMF, in the first season.

  4. Sayang wala na lahat mga matchbox ko :(

kung naitabi ko lang collector's item ngayon un. hilig ko kasi magsira ng mga toys then just to find out how they run.

Influenced din ako ng mga tv cop shows nung 70s na nauso yung mga car chases, crashes, and all those crazy car stunts. ayun ginagawa ko sa mga matchbox ko kaya walang natirang buo hehe

I also remember sa isang toilet paper (brand I forgot) lagi may kasamang molded toy soldiers about 2" high.

hindi siya painted and it was all grey but the detailing was impeccable. mga crusaders, 18th century soldiers etc.

Pards, you were referring to Scott Tissues. I also collected those toy soldiers (may Russian Cossack and Swiss Archer models sila) and made them do "battle" against my toy WW2 US army soldiers.

I am an avid Matchbox collector on the side because my Dad used to buy me those toy cars from the various stores in Quiapo. He told me that they only cost P2 then. :boo: Made in England pa. Mattel now owns the Matchbox brand. But as somebody here said earlier, the look and quality of the older and original British-made Matchbox cars were much better.

  5. Cats in the Cradle

    by Harry Chapin

A child arrived just the other day,

He came to the world in the usual way.

But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.

He learned to walk while I was away.

And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew,

He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad.

You know I'm gonna be like you."

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,

Little boy blue and the man in the moon.

"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,

    But we'll get together then.

You know we'll have a good time then."

My son turned ten just the other day.

He said, "Thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play.

Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,

I got a lot to do." He said, "That's ok."

And he walked away, but his smile never dimmed,

Said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah.

You know I'm gonna be like him."

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,

Little boy blue and the man in the moon.

"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,

    But we'll get together then.

You know we'll have a good time then."

Well, he came from college just the other day,

So much like a man I just had to say,

"Son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while?"

He shook his head, and he said with a smile,

"What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys.

See you later. Can I have them please?"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,

Little boy blue and the man in the moon.

"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,

But we'll get together then, dad.

You know we'll have a good time then."

I've long since retired and my son's moved away.

I called him up just the other day.

I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind."

He said, "I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time.

You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kid's got the flu,

But it's sure nice talking to you, dad.

It's been sure nice talking to you."

And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me,

He'd grown up just like me.

My boy was just like me.

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,

Little boy blue and the man in the moon.

"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,

But we'll get together then, dad.

You know we'll have a good time then."

  6. yeah this should be good...makahanap din nga...

sana maglabas na din ng DVD collection ng early Star Trek TV series, or Twilight Zone, or Combat hehehe

Pards, actually mayroon nang DVD collections for all the series you mentioned. Here in the US, they've been out for at least a couple of years na. I hope they become available there soon.

Still watch their re-runs on TV Land- a cable channel. I prefer the earlier episodes with

    Suzanne Sommer.

Same here. I also watch their reruns on the same cable channel you mentioned and like you, I also prefer Suzanne Sommer to the lady who replaced her. Plus, the earlier episodes were much funnier.

  7. Just to share the old names of Metro Manila streets (format: Old name and current name):

  8. to me the most "memorable" Charlotte Rampling film is THE NIGHT PORTER, where she had a lot of nudity and steamy scenes with Dirk Bogarde hehehe...

    jt2003 Posted Today, 12:09 AM

    QUOTE(bods1000 @ Mar 31 2007, 07:56 PM)

For me it was "The Verdict." No steamy scenes, but what a story. And what a performance by Paul Newman, as good and perhaps even better than his roles in "The Hustler" and "Cool Hand Luke."

I agree with you guys and with Pareng Storm regarding Charlotte Rampling. I saw both movies mentioned above and I liked her a lot because of her nude scenes sa "The Night Porter".

When she was still starting out, she had guested on one of the Avenger episodes in the late 60s.

  9. Talking about Candice Bergen reminds me of other icons of beauty in the 70s like Racquel Welch, Catherine Deneuve, Diana Riggs, Jacqueline Bisset...ah, these women were beautiful

Diana Rigg was such an elegant beauty. Matindi ang crush ko diyan noon! She played the role of Mrs. Emma Peel on the British detective series "The Avengers" with Patrick Macnee.

    "storm Posted Yesterday, 12:18 AM

Lahat yan naging crush ko rin noon pati sina Jane Seymour, Ali MacGraw, Jessica Lange, Katharine Ross and Claudia Cardinale.

    Sa older beauties naman:

Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman, Natalie Wood, Ava Gardner, Lauren Bacall, Hedi Lamarr, Sophia Loren, Bridget Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn

Pahabol sina Twiggy, Cheryl Tiegs, Diane Keaton and Lynda Carter"

Let me add the Bond girls too such as Ursula Andress and Barbara Bach. :thumbsupsmiley:

  10. Knicks fans hate Nets fans.

Lalo na kung nasa brooklyn na ang Nets :P

There's really no such passionate hatred between the 2 camps due to the fact that there's no real history of heated rivalry between the 2 teams. A lot of people in my office are Knicks fans. The Nets were doormats for so long that it was only in the Jason Kidd era when the team started dominating the Atlantic Division. Jason Kidd's arrival coincided with the Knicks' decline. If Knicks fans hate anybody at this point, it's James Dolan, the Knicks' owner, who in their opinion made the mistake of immediately renewing Isiah Thomas's contract even though the team may still fail to make the playoffs this year.

There's also no real fondness for Isiah Thomas who made the Knicks payroll the league's highest.

  11. NETS Improve Playoff Hopes With Win Over PACERS

    http://www.nba.com/games/20070328/INDNJN/recap.html

    Notes:

    1. Another stellar performance by Josh Boone 22pts (career-high); 10rebs; 10/13 FG shooting

    2. Carter scored "just" 13 pts in 34 minutes while Jefferson scored 14 pts in "just" 25 minutes <_<

    3. Indiana played without Jermaine O'Neal but a win's a win!

    4. Another day in the office for Kidd - 12 pts 8 rebs 6 asts in "just" 25 minutes

    5. The Nets are now in 7th place of the Eastern Conference playoffs race (0.5 game above Orlando and 2 games above Indiana and New York with 9 more games remaining for New Jersey)

    GO NETS!!!

And also due to the fact that Jason Collins hardly played at all! Don't forget Boki Nachbar who also contributed 20 points (with several 3-pointers) and Eddie House who scored 9 points in just 4 minutes of play. GO NETS!!! :thumbsupsmiley:

  12. I miss the following places:

    1. Selecta Restaurant on Roxas Boulevard - closed down in the early 80s

    2. Ferino's Bibingka - the best bibingka I've had so far

    3. Big 20 Hamburgers - sa Escolta

First 2 restaurants closed due to family squabbling. Regarding Big 20, their hamburgers were so good that it's just unfortunate that it never got to be as big as Jollibee. May kamahalan kasi e. :(

  13. Thanks! You're absolutely right about Kidd and Nash. Yeah, I remember Nash's rookie year when he's still sporting that crew cut he calls "hair." :D

No, he's not! If you'll read my posts, I'm actually lobbying that he be traded for a quality big man!

In addition, the Nets keep putting themselves in the hole by sticking with Jason Collins. :thumbsdownsmiley:  Please reduce this guy's playing minutes to no more than 10 minutes and give the rest of his playing time to Moore and Josh Boone. Better yet, trade this guy.

Si Lawrence Frank, masarap ding batukan. :thumbsdownsmiley: This guy simply relies way too much on VC, even if the latter is having a bad day. If VC's game is not up to par, then please let guys like Nachbar, House, and Williams pick up the slack. The Nets need a new coach.

  14. NETS loses a vital game against the Orlando MAGIC!

    http://www.nba.com/games/20070323/NJNORL/recap.html

We're just a half game behind the teams in the 7th and 8th play-off slots.

I still believe that the NETS will be able to qualify for the play-offs.

    Waaahhh... It gets harder everyday...

It is getting harder for them. Though the defense has been good, their offense has been found wanting these last few games. I hope they recover in time to make the playoffs.

  15. on that FGU Bldg. housed the REUTERS OFFICE, where as a kid i often spent time with my uncle who worked there before...thanks for the pic, pareng wb. that certainly brought back bits and pieces of days gone by.

In my case naman, after graduating from high school I took a summer job in the building right next to it. (The one with the Royal Tru-Orange sign.) This building was the old FNCB (First National City Bank) building. By the late 70s, ownership of the building transferred to a Chinese family who was friends with my uncle. I assisted the building administrator in collecting rent from tenants. I remember the administrator telling me that the building was built back in the 1920s.

The white building on the other side of the street (under the Shell sign) was the El Hogar building. Ang mga Ayala na yata ang may-ari ngayon pero my maternal grandfather once worked in that building back in the 30s and 40s.

  16. >One visit to an optometrist yielded more than reading glasses. The luminous Dr. Nella Sarabia was business affairs manager for the late Edmond Fortuno, who played the drums in Peñera's third album and at the Calesa Bar gigs.

Pards, was she the same Nella Sarabia-De Leon who also wrote for Jingle magazine?

Back in the late 70s, I had a special issue of Jingle Magazine that focused on all of the Beatles songs. The magazine had a red cover and had the photos of the Fab Four on it. If I remember right, there was an article in the magazine that Nell wrote and one that Juaniyo Arcellana wrote.

Sayang. Wala nang Jingle Magazine. It was a very popular magazine. Most of my friends and classmates who were into music were regular readers. That's why I'm not really sure to this day what led to its demise. :(

  17. I just want to share the following article on how some people never get rich. Though written in the States, there are still a number of tips you may find very helpful:

    TheStreet.com

    10 Reasons You Aren't Rich

Thursday March 22, 11:30 am ET

    ByJeffrey Strain, Special to TheStreet.com

The reason why you aren't a millionaire (or on your way to becoming one) is really quite simple. You probably assume it's because you aren't earning enough money, but the truth is that for most people, whether or not you become a millionaire has very little to do with the amount of money you make. It's the way that you treat money in your daily life.

Here are 10 possible reasons you aren't a millionaire:

    1. You Care What Your Neighbors Think: If you're competing against them and their material possessions, you're wasting your hard-earned money on toys to impress them instead of building your wealth.

    2. You Aren't Patient: Until the era of credit cards, it was difficult to spend more than you had. That is not the case today. If you have credit card debt because you couldn't wait until you had enough money to purchase something in cash, you are making others wealthy while keeping yourself in debt.

    3. You Have Bad Habits: Whether it's smoking, drinking, gambling or some other bad habit, the habit is using up a lot of money that could go toward building wealth. Most people don't realize that the cost of their bad habits extends far beyond the immediate cost. Take smoking, for example: It costs a lot more than the pack of cigarettes purchased. It also negatively affects your wealth in the form of higher insurance rates and decreased value of your home.

    4. You Have No Goals: It's difficult to build wealth if you haven't taken the time to know what you want. If you haven't set wealth goals, you aren't likely to attain them. You need to do more than state, "I want to be a millionaire." You need to take the time to set saving and investing goals on a yearly basis and come up with a plan for how to achieve those goals.

    5. You Haven't Prepared: Bad things happen to the best of people from time to time, and if you haven't prepared for such a thing to happen to you through insurance, any wealth that you might have built can be gone in an instant.

    6. You Try to Make a Quick Buck: For the vast majority of us, wealth doesn't come instantly. You may believe that people winning the lottery are a dime a dozen, but the truth is you're far more likely to get struck by lightning than win the lottery. This desire to get rich quickly likely extends into the way you invest, with similar results.

    7. You Rely on Others to Take Care of Your Money: You believe that others have more knowledge about money matters, and you rely exclusively on their judgment when deciding where you should invest your money. Unfortunately, most people want to make money themselves, and this is their primary objective when they tell you how to invest your money. Listen to other people's advice to get new ideas, but in the end you should know enough to make your own investing decisions.

    8. You Invest in Things You Don't Understand: Your hear that Bob has made a lot of money doing it, and you want to get in on the gravy train. If Bob really did make money, he did so because he understood how the investment worked. Throwing in your money because someone else has made money without fully understanding how the investment works will keep you from being wealthy.

    9. You're Financially Afraid: You are so scared of risk that you keep all your money in a savings account that is actually losing money when inflation is put into the equation, yet you refuse to move it to a place where higher rates of return are possible because you're afraid that you will lose money.

    10. You Ignore Your Finances: You take the attitude that if you make enough, the finances will take care of themselves. If you currently have debt, it will somehow resolve itself in the future. Unfortunately, it takes planning to become wealthy. It doesn't magically happen to the vast majority of people.

In reality, it is probably not just one of the above bad habits that has kept you from becoming a millionaire, but a combination of a few of them. Take a hard look at the list, and do some reflecting. If you want to be a millionaire, it's well within your power, but you'll have to face the issues that are currently keeping you from creating that wealth before you will have a chance to call yourself one.

  18. The problem may be due to the local components that Toyota uses on its cars. Toyota needs to satisfy the government's requirements regarding local content. My father has a Toyota and had problems with its power windows. Upon further inquiries and research, he found out that the malfunctioning parts were locally made.

I agree though that Toyota should have done a better job assuring the quality of the parts that it sources from its local suppliers.

  19. From another forum, from Mr Manilaman:

Just sharing. Listen to the music.

Credits to Ricky Catala who uploaded and added music on the attached old movie of Manila circa 30's which his father took while he was working for Kodak. Although there are a few cars on the road it was when the calesa (horse and buggy) was still the king. I recognized the Pasig River, Escolta, Jones Bridge, Lyric Theater, the old Dewey Blvd, San Miguel and note the houses by the walls of Intramuros. Remember these motion pictures were taken before WII.

You may also wan to checkout the film by Kawayan Productions on the Japanese bombing of Manila as told by an American internees. Enjoy.

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4...29804&hl=en

That video and accompanying music was beautiful and moving. Thanks for sharing this, Pareng Grapelli. The video takes us back to a Manila that is forever lost to all of us. Thanks again.
