  1. question po...

i sprained (rolled in) my ankle six weeks ago.

did R.I.C.E. on the first 24 hours, then i went to the doctor the following day. i had to because this is the worst sprained ankle i had in my whole life... i couldn't even put a little pressure on it.

x-ray was clean and doctor put cast on it after 2 more days. doctor said that the swelling was too much and he wanted it a little smaller before molding the cast on my ankle.

had the cast for less than two weeks because it was irritating me a lot!

i can walk properly now and move my ankle in any directions (stretching exercises), but there's still a small bump around my outer ankle.

i wanna start playing basketball or at least jogging again soon. am i good to go? or should i start worrying already? do i need to visit my doctor again?

    thanks guys!

if it's a really bad sprain then there could have been a partial tear of the tendon... you might consider trying starting with activities and exercises which aren't that heavy on the ankles. try some walking in the pool or cycling first. 6 weeks is okay for a mild sprain which is essentially just a stretch of your tendons/ligaments but a partial tear would take longer to heal.

  2. hello doctor/s

please help me understand why is it that i have fresh blood on my booger and in my nostrils.

    here's my circumstance po...

when i was a child i was diagnosed to have primary complex.

my dad (God bless his soul) died of lung cancer and i was his personal nurse for the two years that he was bed-ridden before he passed away.

i have been living for a year in a cold place, paris france to be exact.

i have very low tolerance from the extremely cold weather, my upper back aches terribly when i'm out exposed to the elements even on a 10deg celcius day.

knowing that and to prevent myself from getting ill, i take 1000 mg of ascorbic acid as often as i could especially last winter.

now spring has sprung, but it is still cold out here. mornings are still 0 degrees lowest.

the blood on my nostrils first manifested a year ago. i was just a newcomer in france then. it gave me quite a scare because i thought it was mucus which was congesting my nose, but when i tried to gently blow my nose fresh blood came streaming from both nostrils. i raised my head and looked at the ceiling for a few minutes until the bleeding stopped. it eventually stopped. but there were days when i would pick my nose and find clumps of dried blood which i thought were booger(kulangot) but it was all dried solid blood. this went on for about two months.

ten months later, today, i see the same blood booger. should i be alarmed? is it possible that i have tuberculosis owing to the fact that i had primary complex as a child and that my dad had lung cancer?

if i go to see a doctor (which is so expensive to do in paris - specialists charge 90euors for consultation alone. ooohlala!), what questions should i ask, how should i prepare?

thank you for your kindness and time. i hope to hear from you, any of you doctors, soon.

hmmm... if blood came out while you cough then that would make me think of some problem in the lung like TB or lung cancer... but if blood would be coming out of your nose, i'm more inclined to think of maybe a vascular lesion or a small tuft of very sensitive blood vessels in your nose... if it continues you probably need to have an ENT check for any such lesions along your nasal area.

  3. mga doc,i have a problem...last thursday nag start ako mag LBM as in poo ng poo ako ..and my feces are wet..liquid sya...eh i went abroad for 4 days...and in that 4 days nakainom ako ng 10 imodium

ngayon kumikick back ATA ung imodium...constipated naman ako ...anak ng .... so i bought ducolax na tablet...okay ba yun?

instant effect? at gaano katagal ung effect? thanks...my stomachs growling.....

tama ka, mukhang masyado ka nga nag imodium. mejo short-acting naman yung imodium so dapat in around 1-2 days balik na sa normal yung dumi mo. Dulcolax pampalambot kasi ng dumi yun, baka mas maganda sa iyo pag motility agent gamitin mo like motilium... you can try taking it three times a day for 2 day and see kung bumalik normal bowel function mo.

  4. xwhiteshadowz,

thank you very much sa assessment mo. my mom is indeed old na, turning 60 y/o this year. may napapansin akong progression sa pain niya. minsan e nagigising siya sa gabi for an hour because of back pains pero di naman consistent yung pain... at minsan, nasa mid-back niya, minsan naman e nasa lower back papuntang legs nuya. pero after a while nawawala. di nga niya alam kung may knalaman sa pagkahulog niya yun kasi dati e nararamdaman niya naman yun. with regard to the bowel movements at pag-urinate, wala namang problema.

i am trying to look for an ortho na medyo affordable ang services/PF, and as soon as makakita, consult kami siguro.

    male_spud,

maraming salamat din sa opinion po. pero bago lahat, although di mo natatanong, di naman po ako nagtitipid dito and nakukuha ko yung ibang gadgets na nabanggit mo. :-) i really am having problems sa finances namin ngayon because i am jobless for quite some time now, and my only source of income is some freelance stuff/gigs i am working on.. just enough to cover our day-to-day needs. i am trying my best to get a regular job na po. there.

my mom is not overweight, but she is already a bit old, 59 y/o. i consulted a PT friend of mine and she suggested a few stretching exercises. i hope mag-improve na nararamdaman niya.

salamat po sa mga tulong. and more opinion/suggestion/recomm will be appreciated po.

sorry, kung mejo harsh comments ko pare, again no offense meant sa iyo, in general kasi, mga pilipino hindi talaga masyado maingat sa kalusugan nila kaya nakakafrustrate...

i agree with yung post dito to really consult an ortho or rehab med doctor... they would be the best specialists to instruct the PT as to what exercises to actually do. The few stretching exercises na pinagawa ng PT friend mo may help. Remember also that if you're mom is pushing 60 then you shouldn't use too many painkillers... dami kasing side effects... gastritis, ulcers, renal problems, cardiovascular problems... and these are magnified in the elderly. The safest painkiller would still be paracetamol...

  5. self-treatment sana ang hinahanap ko sa ngayon, because alam naman po natin na ang hirap ng buhay ngayon, and bagamat ayaw kong tipirin ang ganitong mga bagay, mahirap talaga given my current financial condition.

while i firmly believe that empowering the patient and having him/her involved in health care is very important... pet peeve ko talaga 'tong statement mo...

kaya kasi natin magbudget para bumili ng computer, ipod, cellphone, psp, kotse, yosi etc... pero magbudget sa kalusugan? parating may rason ang pilipino na mahirap ang buhay ngayon...

anyway, i have no right to judge you since i don't know your "current financial condition" ...

the best person to get "self-treatment" from right now is a rehab med doctor who can teach you some exercises or back conditioning/strengthening movements to help take the load off your mother's lower back. mahirap na magsuggest ng exercises online because it will be very important for the doctor to see what the present physical conditioning of your mother is.

you also didn't mention if your mom was overweight... the classic textbook case of a patient with gallstones is female, forty and above and fat. being overweight will also aggravate the degenerative bone changes and the slipping of the vertebral bodies on the lower back of your mother.

if your mom is post-menopause, be sure that she also gets good calcium and vitamin d from her diet.

  6. peripheral blood smear; reticulocyte count and serrum ferritin ::::

can you explain this types of tests, di ko kasi maalala if i already i had this, basta alam ko kasi sang katutak ng dugo ang nakuha ng doctors sa akin sa kakatest, there was a time that they extracted blood from me at least 5 times a day for individual tests, tapos everytime na mahohospitalize ako, they have to check my blood..

yun bone marrow aspirate alam ko di pa nagagawa sa akin yun,

naghihinala sila luekimia kasi my grandfather died from luekimia,

those tests are part of the basic workups for any casue of anemia. if that's the case that you've already went through a battery of tests, maybe you should really consult a good hematologist...

  7. btw iam also diagnosed for reccuring anemia, i hvae been in iron suplement since childhood, also have frequent hematoma spots from nowhere, especially pag pagod.. or napuyat na naman sa insomia

if you have anemia, high WBC and recurring fever, it's correct for the doctor to consider a hematologic disease such as leukemia... have you ever been completely worked up for a hematologic problem?

at the very least, a peripheral blood smear; reticulocyte count and serrum ferritin should have been done. See a hematologist and find out if you need more invasive tests like a bone marrow aspirate to check for hematologic disorders.

  8. mga doctors i have one question po.........pede bang mag rupture ang common iliac vein kapag na-trauma ang upper legs.....say natamaan ng isang matigas na bagay....thanks.

mejo malalim ang common iliac vein... pero possible siya with a big enough stick and a big enough force

  9. can i ask u guys regarding laser treatment for diabetes?? what's your take on this?? is this really effective??

so far the only approved use for laser treatment is for diabetic wounds. other treatments by laser like regenerating insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are still unproven and are not universally accepted by the medical field.

  10. Thanks doc angel. Its actually slightly better now ... but it was still difficult to lift weights last night so I kinda skipped it.

yeah. avoid lifting weights or straining it first. it might take 4-6 wks to heal if its a strained tendon or muscle

  11. What pain reliever can I take or apply to my wrist?

Ive been having recurring pain on my right wrist, I think it was because I strained it doing some needlepoint and then strained it some more lifting weights.

Right now, it hurts when I use a pen. The pain is more a dull throb and when I stretch my wrist/fingers, it hurts a little more.

Theres no swelling on the wrist or anything like that.

how long has it been recurring? if it's been more than a month you might consider doing an x-ray to make sure there aren't any hairline fractures

you can apply a topical NSAID like ibuprofen gel or you can use an NSAID patch like Macroxam for the pain. At night it'll help to keep it in a neutral position as you sleep with a splint, application of a warm compress for around 15 minutes twice to three times a day can also help.

  12. HOW SAFE IS IT TO INDULGE IN FRENCH KISSING TONGUE<TO>TONGUE WITH AN GRO/MPA ?

regarding STD, you can't get AIDS and Hepatitis from kissing. Syphilis you can get from saliva. Herpes you can get from kissing. Mononucleosis you can get from kissing.

  13. Questions lang po sa MTC Docs members or experts dyan.

May itchiness po ako sa ilalim ng testes ko. Pero wala naman po warts and no bad smell of my urine.

What can i do to get rid of this itchiness? I want to medicate it for myself then if the problem persists I will see a doctor.

Do you think this is STD? But whenever I always wear condom naman at alam ko pag may tama ang girl na ka-partner ko.

    Please advise. Thank you. :thumbsupsmiley:

daming pudeng magcause ng itchiness diyan... pudeng fungal infection, pudeng allergy sa mga powder, pawis etc. usually pag yung more common STDs (syphilis, herpes, changcroid) may mga lesions like warts or ulcers.

  14. hello peeps, docs...

i got high triglycerides (175 previously and now 145... 140 ang upper limit) and uric acid (7.5, 7.0 upper limit). aside from that, i experience pain in my knees and muscles (most prominent sa thighs).

i experience muscle pains especially during night. nanghihina yung thigh muscles ko. there are times i cannot even stand up from sitting. mas lalo mahina ang muscle ko kapag nag-exercise ako the day before. alam nyo yung feeling na muscle sore kapag matagal hindi nag-exercise? instead of muscle sore ang nararamdaman ko, weak muscles. nung nagbasketball ako, two days after, madaling-araw, ni hindi ko ma-lift ang legs at arms ko para makapag-iba ng pwesto ng higa.

yung knees naman, kapag nag-exercise ako like biking or jogging, mga 20-50 meters, sumasakit na yung harap ng knees ko. lalo na kapag extending yung motion ng legs ko.

i went to the doctor about 2 months ago. my doctor prescribed me with LIPIGEM for 2 months. it succeeded in partially lowering my triglycerides but still not in the recommended range. i think baka nalilito na yung doctor ko kung ano ang gagamutin. kasi kung anou-ano ang mataas sa blood ko. :D

    thanks in advance. :) ;)

hey pepeng manas. bago ang lahat, some questions: how old are you? what is your daily activity level? do you have regular exercise? is there any pain at all in the muscles? or just weakness.

important lahat ang information na ito. there are many causes of muscle weakness - one is a problem with the muscle itself eg muscle strain, etc. another is a nerve problem and another reason is an electrolyte problem. Make sure that you have checked your electrolytes... notably K, Ca and Mg.

the pain you feel in front of your knees as you jog is probably tendinitis.

Dr. Tan is a good rheumatologist and he will be able to manage your knee pain. Regarding your muscle weakness, be ready to describe to him how often you have the symptoms and what are the inciting events so he can determine if it's a problem in the nerves or in the electrolytes.

Since mataas ang uric acid mo, avoid peanuts, beans, tawilis, anchovies, mackerel, mussels and innards. Also for joint pains/arthritis (especially if you have osteophytes) it is best to keep to your ideal body weight, you can compute for this by multiplying 18.6 - 23.9 by your height squared.

so far ang alam kong nagagawa ng glucosamine is it prevents further joint damage... and best results are not with oral glucosamine but with glucosamine injected in your joint. Dr. Tan will know more about this.

    hope this helps

  15. Pag nag positive ba sa HBsAg puede pa magpa vaccine?

tama si angel... once you've got the virus useless na ang vaccination... you can only pray that you are one of the lucky few who will combat the virus and develop immunity. Most of the time though the hepatitis B virus becomes "dormant" and like AIDS, will just continue to replicate in your body until the viral load is so high and then you get all the bad effects... starting from fatty liver, then liver cirrhosis, then liver cancer.

Is there a treatment? Right now, there is no 100% effective treatment for hepatitis B. A lot of advances have been made in antiviral therapy but these are expensive and usually long-term (the shortest span for treatment will be a year, newer drugs have to be taken continously); plus these anti-virals will only be useful for a handful of people, depending on the status of their Hepatitis B infection...

    Kinda complex right?

The best thing to do is still and shall always be prevention... check your HbsAg and Anti-HBs level, get immunized/vaccinated if you don't have the infection and still don't have antibodies and practice safe sex. True, maternal-fetal transmission of Hepatitis B is still the number one source of Hepatitis B in the philippines, but also remember that is more likely to contract Hepatitis B from casual sex rather than getting HIV/AIDS.

    Keep healthy!

  16. Amygdala ..i think is in the hypothalamus..It's a pea size thing there..where emotions are regulated ..

correct... based on neuroanatomy the amygdala in the hypothalamus has been traditionally been the "controller" of some emotions... especially the endorphin high from love etc... though the frontal lobes are also associated with behavior and temperament....

so for me... the old-fashioned answere --- still the Heart :)

  17. Been there, done that.

Tried to work it out with him, but in the course of this working-out phase, I strayed as well.

So I swore, never try to work it out again.

    lol

On a serious note, yeah, its easy to forgive of course, you love the person eh. but the trust and commitment? they'll never be the same.

i agree... but 2nd chances should always be given...

if your married... even more important for 2nd chances... wag lang masyadong magpaloko...

hehehe... kaya dapat wag mahuli :)
