Just to be fair to Senator Padilla, at least he's thinking of new things, well, maybe not new but a senator is a legislator above all things. I wish he'd channel that energy of his better.

Look at this first group. They're dictators who, after WWII, got some of the most viral tongue lashings from their respective oppositions:

Park Chung Hee, Ferdinand Marcos, Lee Kwan Yew, Soeharto, August Pinochet, Shah of Iran.

What do they all have in common? They were friendly to Uncle Sam for various reasons: to join the concerted world-wide effort to stop Soviet expansionism, economic development (usually and end in itself), etc.

Now compare that first group with this next one. They're anti-US dictators.

Kim Il Sung, Mao Tse Tung, FIdel Castro, Josef Tito, Enver Hoxha, Mohammar Kadaffi, Saddam Hussein, Ayatollah Kohmeini.

Question: in whose country(s) would you have wanted to live during their times? Stingkapore and South Korea are obvious choices. But the Philippines during Marcos wasn't so bad, neither was Iran at the time of the Shah. Indonesia was a lot crappier than the Philippines at the time of Soeharto, but I'd choose it any day compared to North Korea, Mao's China, or Cuba, or Libya, or the Ayatollah's Iran.
