glut_func
They only show what the people WANT to see and not what they NEED to see. Don't believe everything and anything that you watch on TV, read on the papers and hear about on radio - they no longer bring the news, they MAKE the news. It's amazing how the madlang pipol still buy those crap like the "rated PG" disclaimer by MTRCB that comes on at the start of your favorite telenobelas or shows. I mean, pano mapapatnubayan ng magulang ang mga batang nakakapanood kung ang mga nakatatanda mismo tinatangkilik din yung palabas na merong tema na hindi angkop para sa mga batang manonood in the first place? Just sayin' 1 Quote Link to comment
Julianda
This is actually a broad topic in which each form can be dissected of - such as citing any instances or for discussion purposes. 1. Broadcast2. Film3. Video games4. Audio recording and reproduction5. Internet6. Print media7. Outdoor media What is more compelling about this topic is how they manipulate people in their lives. 1. glut_func
Regardless of the medium used by the media to deliver their message, it is up to the audience to use their heads first. Severe lack of common sense is what most pinoys need to really work on - the ability to question and think first. If the madla easily falls prey to even the typical "kwentong barbero" or "tsismis" around, pano pa kaya sa mga napapanood nila sa araw-araw? Quote Link to comment
Mango Man
in general, popular media (whether social, print, etc.) influences not only what people see or read, but also the point of view / angle that they use to present information shapes how we react to events. So we have to be careful of biases (check who are the owners of the media outlets), and more important but difficult, we should not swallow everything we see or read hook line and sinker, but be critical in our thinking. 1 Quote Link to comment
Edmund Dantes
Mahirap = Biktima. 2 Quote Link to comment
Larry
it's such a broad question, even if you break it down per medium to answer it broadly, it affects everything about a person, from what we wear to what we eat, what we believe, what we stand for, etc. I don't know where you're going with this, so it would help if you could expound a bit. 1 Quote Link to comment

Larry
what are you curious about the media? how does the media do it? what techniques do they use? why is content skewed a certain way? who controls content? there's still a lot of things under that, media in society is a 4 year college course in some universities. Meanwhile, why can’t you just cite an instance to support any of them? Hmmm. Quote Link to comment
haroots2
Don't always believe what media says. Its all about the ratings. They focus on what the"masa" want them to see. Example - Do you think they added a high % of devotees sa Feast of Black Nazarene ng Quiapo because of their coverage. What the masses interpret on what they see. They bring so much hope that they will be successful as the small number of success story it has that the media had focused on. Quote Link to comment
Edmund Dantes
yes media affect people since majority of Filipino are just indoors and watching thier tv and all media station are biased their on the side of people who pay/feed them. Mayaman at may pinagaralan = Masama. Mahirap = Bikitima. Kapag May Katwiran ipaglaban mo. Agrisiete. Negosyete. Sineskwela. 2 Quote Link to comment

Remember during the 90s, we had Richard Gomez, Cesar Montano, The Guwapings, Anjanette Abayari, as the decade's standards for beauty. The 90s was when the Pinoy/Pinay look reigned and people gravitated towards this aesthetic. Enter the new millenium and the advent of Taiwanese pop stars F4, meteor garden and the eventual entry of koreanovelas, and now the preferred standards of beauty has changed from moreno/morena to chinito. Not that the morenas got uglier, mind you. Quote Link to comment

Julianda
I'll give you an example of how media affects society. This is one of the classic examples how the media (of marketing/advertising) plays a vital role in our society. Though the milestone of ever changing ‘preferences’ especially among our young generations have always been taken advantage by many of our marketing and advertising companies. We can differentiate between the hype and the fad among the people and its system involved. They are the consumers and the producers in the area of marketing/advertising. Those consumers who are being targeted and get excited over a certain product to the point they begin to feel they need to consume such, are called hype. The producers or the marketing companies create a system and apply it through a clever marketing strategy to which a product is advertised as the thing everyone must have can be called as fad. So they go hand in hand and that's manipulation all about. This is how it seems to be the media succeed in manipulating us. We buy something that we do not need but just because we see it from our favorite celebrities and we think it can be as effective as the one being endorsed. dextayao
Its hard to trust media nowadays as they are being paid as well to attack certain entities (businesses, individuals, political figures). IMHO, media today is still the same thing as it is described in the book "1984" by George Orwell. As for manipulation, i agree. Viewers are easily manipulated by the media by what they see and hear. I guess its up to the viewer/listener to determine for themsleves, although most Filipinos now especially the youth are losing depth of thought. 1 Quote Link to comment
Edmund Dantes
Try this for size http://entertainment.inquirer.net/160664/dog-bites-kris-aquino-son-bimby Grabe! This is soooooooooooo news worthy. It deserves everyone's attention great job local media. I remember nung time na north Korea threatened to launch one of its Missile and start a nuclear war, the whole world was worried, CNN kept talking about it, at ang local TV patrol natin? Right tama yan.
Edmund Dantes
The media can basically decide who the heroes and the villains are. Its so powerful, even the worst douchebags can be darling to the masses. Madaming beses na natin ito nakita. Ang galing talaga pag kakampi mo media. Cases in point Kris Aquino Vs. Joey Marquez. ABS-CBN went as far as soliciting inspirational messages to all their kapamilya stars. Vhong Navarro. Anybody with a little bit of common sense should know na malayo si Vhong sa maamong kordero na gusto ipalabas ng kapamilya network. Quote Link to comment
haroots2

Larry
remember media is a mirror because it's a commercial enterprise, money drives media, and money comes from the number of viewers/readers etc. in essence media only shows what the public wants to see. shows are stupid because the public wants stupid.
