Back To The 70's

Recommended Posts

Once in a while, I get to see a well-restored Beetle on the road. Madami pa rin kasing pyesa na available. I've always dreamt of owning a Karmann Ghia. O kaya an Austin Mini (I almost did earlier this year).

Oh yes - a Karmann Ghia. I find its design to be an acquired taste. I hated it the first time, but eventually it got more and more pleasing to the eye.

In the 70s there would be issues of Road & Track featuring these mini sports cars. Along with the Karmann Ghia would be the Fiat X1/9, the MGB GT, the Porsche 914, the Triumph TR3. Timeless beauties.....dream classics to own now.

Yung built in although more pleasing aesthetically, mahina ang buga ng lamig!

Walang cellphone kaya hanap trenta sentimos at pulang telepono. Swerte kung gumagana. Tawag ka sa "haybols" ng barkada, hoping they would be there.

When I was in college (engineering school), I had the chance to overhaul a 1300 VW Beetle engine. Just don't ask me to do it again. Baka lalo lang masira. Hahaha. :upside:

May bigtime akong pinsan noon na bumili ng Eleanor na dilaw, because of Gone in 60 Seconds.

heavy, irritating tikitik sound when dialling pulse type telephones. ours had metal dials while my lolo's phone was wall-mounted.

retelco (predecessor of pldt) used 6digit phone#s. madali memorize area, clue sa first 2 digits 60-manila sampaloc / 61= QC / 70=cubao 97=up 98=proj8/ 8x= makati, etc...

in baguio, we used to go to the pldt station (top of session road sa may tropical hut/queens) for longdistance operator assisted calls to manila...

those were the days my friend....................

Bakit may white spots?

Baste joined the NC in '69 and became contenders practically overnight. They won their first title in '73 behind a team led by Benjie Cleofas, younger brother of Joy Cleofas who played for Ateneo a few years earlier and later for Yco in the MICAA alongside my other favorites Freddie Webb and Mike Bilbao. In the 80's, the (Golden) Stags had a 5-peat at around the same time as UST (Glowing Goldies) was having their 4-peat. We call these the "Golden" years in collegiate basketball.

thanks for refreshing my faulty memory, pare. Indeed those years were "Golden" but only to those who had the dynasty hehehe. Imagine a 5-peat. Can Ateneo or San Beda now be capable of such a feat?

I think I had a glimpse of Bringas when I caught the tail end of Baste vs Letran game1 Jrs. indeed he is a behemoth and I think he is more than 6'6" pa yata! BUT, and this is a big but, he's as thin as a reed. A stiff wind would blow him over!

Think of a local Manute Bol and that's it. With the prevalence of much beefier foreign players in both leagues, I doubt if this guy will be effective at least in his rookie year. He could be a Ballesteros in a few years though.

Pareng Bods...long time no see!

yeah pare we miss you. I thought you were still in HK. Yung sinasabi mong HMV dun, napuntahan namin nung May. Dami ngang DVD dun and catalogued pa according to Director! Say all works by Fellini sama sama then all works by Godard etc. Medyo steep nga lang price and hey wala akong nakitan Bullitt!

The CD section there is to die for pero may kamahalan nga talaga compared to other CD outlets sa tabi-tabi dun...

...or maybe a Peter Aguilar, who at 6'9 started out also reedthin for Ateneo.

...wish we can all get back together - Magaling, sbm, 16track, slide, storm, gadj hehehe

Were you there during the bonfire?

If I knew, sana sumama ko sa mga anak ko who were there too hehehe...

Balita nga another Baste high school jewel, Bringas is being lured over to the Ateneo. Kawawa naman yung San Sebastian. Buenafe did not play for them in college, tapos baka si Bringas pa, who is reportedly a 6'6 behemoth..

Gone are the glory days of San Sebastian. Correct me if I'm wrong, guys, pero I remember San Sebastian having some sort of mini-dynasty way back in the 70's or 80's. Nun yatang panahon nina Greg Otazu?

nice to see the old pares back - sliderule and Magaling hehehe

cheers!

oy pare, kumusta na? yes, i was there but left before the bonfire. had a great time seeing my former classmates...some of whom were still passing around mogs! i think you are referring to jimmy otazu, the bemoustached point guard who played with benjie cleofas, boy mora, david supnet, etc. i think baste also won titles with paul alvarez. heard about bringas but then he'll have to line up before al-hussain and justin chua whos still raw.

bro, that's japeth aguilar you are referring to and he's now in division 2. according to some admu alumni, nonoy baclao was given a second look by norman black when he emphatically blocked aguilar in a game some years back...soon after he was recruited.

yup, let's tentatively sked an eb perhaps sometime last week of october. suggested dates? place? will be in bacolod this week for the masskara.

para di ot, and since we've been talking about mags, cb, pioneer kp models and other car accessories, anybody remember the old gas stations? esso, mobil, filoil, getty?

As long as Week days-- okay ako sa CD exchange. Got me a Temptations Cd.

Very cool music!

The Temptations, although they started in the 60--soared even higher in the 70s.

From what I recall. these were 70's releases by the Temptations:

1. Papa was a Rolling Stone

2. Just my Imagination

3. Ball of Confusion

4. Happy People

I used to go home after school and channel 9 would be showing reruns of a TV special featuring the Temptations.

man, i love the temptations. i love the whole soul groove. the 5th dimensions, the spinners, the four tops, etc. lets have soul and funk as our theme during the next eb.

bossing, do you by any chance have a copy of elvis' "true love travels thru a gravel road"?

heheh! That Soul Groove was one of a kind!

I remember watching the Commodores in Araneta sometime in the mid 70's and it was a blast.

That time, Lionel Ritchie was so funky -- it's almost impossible to believe that he'd go the soft Hallmark way later in his career.

Nakakainis lang as I can't find my darned copy of the Commodores "Best of" CD.

Anybody got one??

The Commodores even came out with a track called 'CEBU" as one of the members fell in love with the place when they visited the place.

Those 70's funk groups really had that group.

Up to now, Isaac Hayes still rocks me with Shaft!
