The Festival, Briefly

MassKara ("mass" + kara, face — a multitude of faces) began in 1980 as Bacolod's answer to a brutal year: the collapse of world sugar prices had gutted the Negros economy, and the sinking of the MV Don Juan had taken hundreds of Negrense lives. The city's artists and civic leaders staged a festival of smiling masks as a statement — the city would smile through it.
