Every morning before sunrise, on a shallow seamount called Monad Shoal twenty minutes offshore, the pelagic thresher shark (Alopias pelagicus) — a normally deep-water species almost never observed in shallow water by recreational divers anywhere on the planet — ascends from the abyss to visit cleaning stations manned by resident cleaner-wrasses. Divers who arrive at Monad Shoal at 5:30 am, positioned quietly on the shoal's edge, encounter the sharks at 15-30 metres depth as they hover motionless while wrasses clean their gills and scythe-like tail fin. This has occurred, reliably, six mornings a week for approximately three decades. It is the reason Malapascua exists on the world dive-tourism map. The Malapascua Position Malapascua sits off the northern tip of Cebu Island, in the Visayan Sea north of Daanbantayan municipality. The island is small (approximately 2.5 sq km), coral-fringed, ringed by beach-and-mangrove shoreline, and served by a community of local Cebuano fishing-and-tourism families. Population approximately 3,000. The island's tourism economy runs almost entirely on diving — specifically, the Monad Shoal thresher-shark encounter — supplemented by broader Northern Cebu reef diving and quiet-beach visits. Access is via Maya Port at the northern tip of Cebu Island (approximately 4 hours drive from Cebu City / MCIA), then a 30-45-minute banca-boat crossing to Malapascua's Bounty Beach (the main village landing). Monad Shoal The substantive thresher-shark encounter site. Structural facts: Location: approximately 8 kilometres southeast of Malapascua Island. Depth: 15-30 metres at the seamount plateau; drops off dramatically to 200m+ around the edges. Species: Alopias pelagicus (pelagic thresher shark), a species growing to 3+ metres length (of which nearly half is the distinctive scythe-like upper tail lobe used to stun prey). Behaviour observed: pre-dawn ascent from deep water to cleaning stations manned by cleaner-wrasse (Labroides spp.). The sharks hover motionless while wrasses remove parasites from gills, mouth, and tail-fin surfaces. Frequency: reliable near-daily encounters, best observed 5:30-7:30 am when the sharks are actively cleaning. Diving requirement: Advanced Open Water certification recommended (depth); early morning boat departure typically 4:30-5:00 am. Why the shoal: cleaning stations attract pelagic species that otherwise remain in deep water. Malapascua's proximity to the deep Visayan Sea drop-off + the shallow shoal + established wrasse-cleaner population combines to create one of the world's most-predictable pelagic-thresher-shark observation opportunities. Divers travel from around the world specifically for this dive.
