The Ifugao terraces at Batad, Bangaan, Mayoyao, Hungduan, and Nagacadan — collectively inscribed by UNESCO in 1995 as the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras serial site — carry a cultural landscape older than most European cathedrals, contemporary with the Roman Republic, and continuously maintained by the same ethnolinguistic community across approximately eighty generations. Banaue is the visitor gateway to this landscape: the Ifugao municipality that most travellers name when they mean the terraces broadly, home to the accessible Banaue Viewpoint, and the trailhead for the substantive Batad amphitheater trek that most affluent cultural visitors recognise as the country's most-important single cultural-tourism experience.
