ECF, Gm5: Jason Garrison's wrist shot from the circle deflects off Tyler Johnson and into the twine, giving the Lightning a 4-3 win in overtime

PITTSBURGH -- The Tampa Bay Lightning put the Pittsburgh Penguins on the brink of elimination when they took their only lead of Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final.

Tyler Johnson scored 53 seconds into overtime to give the Lightning a 4-3 victory at Consol Energy Center on Sunday. Nikita Kucherov passed the puck to Jason Garrison in the left circle, and Garrison's shot grazed off Johnson in front of the net and got past Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

The Lightning lead the best-of-7 series 3-2. Game 6 is in Tampa on Tuesday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

"We're in the exact same position we were in last year [against the New York Rangers in the conference final]," Johnson said. "We were able to win and go back home, and we want to get [the win this year] in Game 6 in front of our home fans."

The Penguins blew leads of 2-0 and 3-2 with a chance to move within one victory of the Stanley Cup Final. Kucherov tied it 3-3 with 3:16 remaining in the third period with his second goal of the night and NHL-leading 11th of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

ST. LOUIS -- The San Jose Sharks are on the cusp of their first appearance in the Stanley Cup Final, and their captain was front and center Monday to put them in that position.

Joe Pavelski scored twice, including the go-ahead goal 16 seconds into the third period, to help the Sharks to a 6-3 win against the St. Louis Blues in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final at Scottrade Center.

San Jose has a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 series. Game 6 will be played Wednesday at SAP Center (9 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

Pavelski, who has a six-game point streak (four goals, five assists), tipped a right point shot from Brent Burns to break a 3-3 tie. Pavelski won a faceoff after Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester iced the puck six seconds into the third. Pavelski leads the NHL with 12 goals in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

SAN JOSE -- The San Jose Sharks will play in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time after a 5-2 win against the St. Louis Blues in Game 6 of the Western Conference Final at SAP Center on Wednesday.

The Sharks, who started play in 1991-92, won the best-of-7 series 4-2 and will face the winner of the Eastern Conference Final between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning, which will be decided in Game 7 on Thursday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

"It's unbelievable," San Jose forward Joe Thornton told NBCSN. "Especially to do it here at home. These guys have been waiting 25 years for this, and obviously I've been waiting a long time too. It's pretty sweet."

Joel Ward scored two goals, and Martin Jones made 23 saves for the Sharks. Captain Joe Pavelski, rookie Joonas Donskoi and Logan Couture scored.

Vladimir Tarasenko scored his first two goals of the series, each in the third period, and Brian Elliott made 22 saves for the Blues, who lost in their third elimination game of the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs. PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins will play in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2009 after defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final at Consol Energy Center on Thursday.

The Stanley Cup Final against the San Jose Sharks begins here on Monday (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC, TVA Sports).

In a Game 7 full of big-name players, including Tampa Bay captain Steven Stamkos in his return to action, Penguins rookie forward Bryan Rust scored twice and rookie goalie Matt Murray made 16 saves.

"The big dream is still yet to be achieved," Rust said. "I credit my linemates for elevating their game and helping me elevate mine. It just happens that I was the one who put the pucks in the net."

PITTSBURGH -- In a game filled with wild momentum swings, Nick Bonino scored with 2:33 remaining to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-2 win against the San Jose Sharks in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final at Consol Energy Center on Monday.

"It's one game, but I think we did a lot of good things," Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby said. "First and third (periods) we were really strong, generated a lot of chances.

"We saw a lot of their strengths, especially in the second, with how good they are at getting pucks to the net and holding on to pucks down low. They play pretty fast. Just two teams who want to get to the exact same game. I thought we did a really good job in the first and third of doing that."

Game 2 of the best-of-7 series is here on Wednesday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

PITTSBURGH -- Conor Sheary scored 2:35 into overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 2-1 win against the San Jose Sharks in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final at Consol Energy Center on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh leads the best-of-7 series 2-0 with Game 3 at SAP Center in San Jose on Saturday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

Sharks defenseman Justin Braun tied it 1-1 with 4:05 remaining in the third period. He sent a slap shot through traffic, off the right post and into the net behind rookie goalie Matt Murray.

Penguins forward Phil Kessel scored 8:20 into the second period for a 1-0 lead. Sharks defenseman Roman Polak passed by the top of the crease through Kessel to defenseman Brenden Dillon, who was stripped of the puck by Carl Hagelin in the right circle.

Donskoi's overtime winner PIT@SJS, Gm3: Donskoi goes top-shelf to win Game 3

Cup Final, Gm3: Joonas Donskoi carries the puck to the left circle and fires a wrister past Matt Murray, giving the Sharks a 3-2 win in Game 3

SAN JOSE -- The San Jose Sharks and their fans waited 25 years for their first Stanley Cup Final home game. They had no issue waiting a bit longer than usual for their first Stanley Cup Final win.

Rookie Joonas Donskoi scored 12:18 into overtime to give the Sharks a 3-2 win in Game 3 against the Pittsburgh Penguins before a frenzied full house at SAP Center on Saturday.

"You couldn't have scripted it any better," Sharks center Logan Couture said. "Overtime win, loud. Fans were into it from the start."

Donskoi scored after his linemates won some battles along the boards. Melker Karlsson was in aggressively on the forecheck, and despite losing his stick and a glove, he forced a bad clearing attempt that ended up at the feet of teammate Chris Tierney.

Donskoi picked the puck out of Tierney's skates, circled the net and flared out wide before lifting a shot that beat Pittsburgh goalie Matt Murray short-side over his right shoulder.

"I asked [Joonas] if he knew where [the shot] went," Tierney said. "I don't think he knows still."

Eric Fehr made it 3-1 with 2:02 remaining in the third period, taking a pass from Carl Hagelin and beating goalie Martin Jones from the slot to the upper right corner of the net.

Pittsburgh squanders chance to win championship at home; Game 6 in San Jose on Sunday

PITTSBURGH -- The San Jose Sharks prevented the Pittsburgh Penguins from winning the Stanley Cup with a 4-2 victory in Game 5 of the Final at Consol Energy Center on Thursday.

Pittsburgh has a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 series, which returns to San Jose for Game 6 at SAP Center on Sunday (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC, TVA Sports).

Pittsburgh was trying to win the Stanley Cup at home for the first time; the Penguins won the Cup three times on the road (1991 at Minnesota North Stars; 1992 at Chicago Blackhawks; 2009 at Detroit Red Wings).

It would have been the first time a major professional sports team from Pittsburgh won a championship at home since the 1960 Pirates defeated the New York Yankees in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series at Forbes Field.

And the NHL playoffs are back! I'm glad the Minnesota Wild didn't just give up, and are going to play a 5th game in their 1st round series against the St. Louis Blues after winning the fourth match 2-0. However they are currently down 3-1 in the series, and teams coming back to win a seven game series after being down 3-0 has only happened four times in NHL history! Still, let's see if they can become the fifth team to join that club! Of the four clubs who have mounted such comebacks to date, 2 have won the Stanley Cup (1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, 2014 Los Angeles Kings), 1 appeared in the Stanley Cup Finals (2010 Philadelphia Flyers), and 1 made it to a Conference Final (1975 New York Islanders)!

Here are the summaries of all the 1st Round playoff series at this point:

West:

Nashville leads Chicago 3-0

St. Louis leads Minnesota 3-1

Anaheim WINS over Calgary 4-0

Edmonton and San Jose are tied 2-2

East:

Washington and Toronto are tied 2-2

Pittsburgh leads Columbus 3-1

Montreal and NY Rangers are tied 2-2

Ottawa leads Boston 3-1

2nd Round Summary:

The Predators went on to beat the Blues, the Ducks beat the Oilers (albeit a bit controversially), the Penguins beating the Capitals yet again, and the Senators beating the Rangers!

Conference Finals Summary:

The Predators beat the Ducks down, while the Penguins grinder really hard (all the way to OT in Game 7) to beat the Senators!

Stanley Cup Finals Summary:

The Penguins eliminated the challenger Predators in six games to earn their 2nd consecutive Stanley Cup (and their 5th overall since they were founded in 1967)! Although Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals attracted a bit of controversy due to a disallowed goal by the Predators! Had that goal been allowed, the game (and maybe even the series) may have looked very different!

Anyway congrats to the Pittsburgh Penguins on being the top of the NHL again! Can't wait for October to roll around again! Hopefully this time the Minnesota Wild have better luck going the distance this time! :)

vegas golden knights! any opinions? me, i like the idea and i think they're for real.

I think they are pretty good for a starting team - I am not sure when was the last time a first year expansion team made the playoffs (maybe the Blues during the 1967-68 season, perhaps?)! Their scouts during the expansion draft really studied their options! I think they have a very strong chance to make the playoffs in spring! Though I don't think they have enough experience playing together to get a top seeding though. However, I can see them bagging a Wild Card spot.

On the other hand, seems like a lot of teams have backtracked from last year's postseason through some rather slow starts like the Wild (my team), Oilers, Blackhawks, Senators, Capitals, Rangers, and Ducks. And teams that struggled last year are showing some promise this season, like the Jets, Devils, Kings, and Flames... But then again, I find the start of Dec still a bit premature to really guesstimate what the postseason picture will be like. After All-Star Break will be a far better time to gauge!
