Avalanche top Flames on Boedker's shootout goal

Colorado leads by three points in race for final wild card in West

Boedker's SO goal provides edge COL@CGY: Boedker uses nifty move to give edge in SO

3/18/16: Mikkel Boedker uses a beautiful move and goes to his backhand to beat Joni Ortio, giving the Avalanche the edge in the shootout

CALGARY -- Mikkel Boedker scored the only goal in the shootout to give the Colorado Avalanche a come-from-behind 4-3 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday.

Erik Johnson, Tyson Barrie, Carl Soderberg scored, and Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves for the Avalanche (37-31-4), who overcame a 3-1 deficit to move three points ahead of the Minnesota Wild for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference. The Wild have a game at hand.

"It was huge. It was really, really big," Boedker said. "That gives you just slightly more breathing room. You can't take anything for granted, but the more points you can gain when they aren't playing the better. We can't rely on anybody else to do it for us. We have to do it ourselves. I think that's the way we look at it."

Boedker raced in and beat Joni Ortio with a backhand in the second round of the tiebreaker. Varlamov ended the game by stopping Sean Monahan's wrist shot in the third round.

"Just coming in with speed and hoping the goaltender bites on your fake shot and brought it to the backhand," Boedker said. "It was one of those things that felt really good, and it's going to go a long way confidence-wise."

Matt Stajan, Mark Giordano and Freddie Hamilton scored, and Ortio made 25 saves for the Flames (30-35-6), who finished 3-1-2 on their six-game homestand.

"I felt this homestand we played some very good games," Calgary coach Bob Hartley said. "I like what I saw from our guys. We're experiencing some young kids in the lineup and they're doing well. Our veterans are leading by example. They're bringing in great performances, plus also some very good leadership. It's good."

Talbot, Oilers blank Canucks

Goalie makes 40 saves for third shutout this season; Eberle, Hendricks score

EDMONTON -- Goaltender Cam Talbot continues to be a bright spot for the Edmonton Oilers in a disappointing season.

Talbot made 40 saves for his third shutout, and the Oilers defeated the Vancouver Canucks 2-0 at Rexall Place on Friday.

It was Talbot's 11th NHL shutout and Edmonton's second consecutive win.

"We knew we were going to have to weather the storm and we did a good job in front of the net boxing out, tying up sticks and getting to rebounds, so credit goes to the guys in front of me," said Talbot, who has a 2.50 goals-against average and .919 save percentage in 50 games. "I feel more confident than I have pretty much my whole career and I'm giving the guys a chance to win, and they've been playing some pretty solid hockey in front of me."

Andersen makes 38 saves, Ducks shut out Bruins

Andersen stones Bergeron's tip BOS@ANA: Anderson makes pad save on tip in front

3/18/16: Patrice Bergeron redirects a pass on goal, but Frederik Andersen slides to his left for a nice pad save in the 2nd

ANAHEIM -- Goaltender Frederik Andersen's scheduled night off turned into one to remember when he made 38 saves to help the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Boston Bruins 4-0 on Friday at Honda Center.

Andersen, who took John Gibson's spot in the goalie rotation after Gibson came down with the flu on Thursday, earned his second shutout of the season and the fifth of his career. He's 4-0-0 against Boston in his career and is 9-1-0 in his past 10 starts.

"He was outstanding tonight," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "Both goalies are pushing each other to be better every night, and when that happens you're going to be successful."

The Ducks have been switching between Gibson and Andersen every two games, and the strategy has been effective. Gibson and Andersen each rank among the NHL's top eight in goals-against average, and Anaheim has played well since Boudreau implemented a rotation, so he says there's no reason not to continue to rotate them at least through the rest of the regular season.

Quick holds firm to preserve win BOS@LAK: Quick denies final shot, Kings run clock out

3/19/16: Jonathan Quick denies the last shot the Bruins can muster as the clock runs out, giving the Kings a 2-1 win to secure a playoff spot

LOS ANGELES -- Jonathan Quick has been the backbone of the Los Angeles Kings' recent success in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and he was their foundation in the win that guaranteed they'll return to the postseason.

Quick made 27 saves on 28 shots to help the Kings clinch a playoff berth with a 2-1 victory against the Boston Bruins at Staples Center on Saturday.

The Kings (44-22-5), who missed the playoffs as defending Stanley Cup champions last season, clinched with their win and the Arizona Coyotes' 2-0 loss against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

"Last year, falling just short, definitely gives you motivation in the offseason to come in and have a good season," Los Angeles forward Milan Lucic said. "There's still 11 games left, and we want to finish as high up as we can in the standings. Hopefully, we keep playing that hard-nosed style of hockey. … It's a great accomplishment."

Blues' Elliott blanks Canucks in return from injury

Makes 19 saves against Canucks in first start since Feb. 22

by Kevin Woodley / NHL.com Correspondent

March 20th, 2016
cut.jpg

VANCOUVER -- The St. Louis Blues played a perfect game for goalie Brian Elliott in his first start since Feb. 22.

Elliott spent most of the night watching the Blues dominate with a season-high 50 shots at the other end, needing to make just 19 saves to help St. Louis to a 3-0 victory against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Saturday.

"The guys made it a little easier on me, getting 50 shots on net, spending a lot of time in their zone, playing the type of game that wins us hockey games," Elliott said. "I just tried to stay big, cover the ice, and let the guys do the rest of the work."

Goaltenders sometimes struggle when they aren't busy, but after missing 10 games with a lower-body injury, Elliott had no complaints about the light workload.

"It wasn't too many long breaks between shots, and they had some scoring opportunities, so it's just trying to stay focused," Elliott said. "And when you have been off for a month, it's almost nice to have a little break in between shots so you can regroup."

GLENDALE, Ariz. - After losing five of the past six games, the Tampa Bay Lightning labeled their game against the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday a must-win.

Goalie Ben Bishop made sure the Lightning got what they needed, and set a franchise record in the process.

Bishop made 32 saves for his 15th career shutout with Tampa Bay and the Lightning moved back into second place in the Atlantic Division with a 2-0 win at Gila River Arena.

Ondrej Palat scored in the final minute of the first period and Bishop did the rest, passing Nikolai Khabibulin on the Lightning all-time shutout list and lowering his NHL-best goals-against average to 2.02. The Lightning killed six Arizona power plays, including nearly two full minutes of 5-on-3 early in the second period.

Nylander's 3rd goal of season BUF@TOR: Nylander's wrist shot beats Johnson

3/19/16: Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau finds William Nylander who fires one past Chad Johnson to even the score at 1 in the 2nd period

TORONTO -- William Nylander is starting to feel quite comfortable in his NHL surroundings.

The 19-year-old center scored a goal and had an assist for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 4-1 win against the Buffalo Sabres at Air Canada Centre on Saturday.

"I think it's coming every game," Nylander said. "You start to find areas of the ice where you can make certain plays. It's coming and it's getting there."

Toronto coach Mike Babcock has said he'd prefer to play Nylander on the wing at this stage of his career because the center position is harder to learn, but injuries to Maple Leafs centers have forced Nylander into the middle. Nylander was picked eighth in the 2014 NHL Draft.

Lehtonen denies Tavares in front NYI@DAL: Lehtonen stones Tavares' chance

3/19/16: Kari Lehtonen stops John Tavares' chance at a rebound on the doorstep to keep the Islanders off the board in the 2nd period

Kari Lehtonen made 27 saves for his second shutout of the season, and the Dallas Stars defeated the New York Islanders 3-0 at American Airlines Center on Saturday.

It was the 34th NHL shutout for Lehtonen, who allowed six goals in a 6-5 loss to the Islanders at Barclays Center on Jan. 3, and the first for the Stars against the Islanders since they relocated from Minnesota in 1993.

"It was nice to get those goals, to get a cushion," Lehtonen told Fox Sports Southwest. "That last minute was a moment to remember. They're a great skating team, but we defended well. There were a lot of big blocks that made things easier for me."

Cody Eakin scored with 6:57 remaining in the second period, and Patrick Eaves and Ales Hemsky had third-period goals for Dallas (43-21-9), which has won back-to-back home games and is first in the Central Division and the Western Conference. The Stars start a three-game road trip against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.

3/19/16: Oliver Bjorkstrand tallies his second NHL goal as he beats Yann Danis from the top of the circle, putting the Blue Jackets up 6-3

COLUMBUS -- John Tortorella, coaching in his 1,000th NHL regular season game, still has things to learn, such as not putting too much into the head of Columbus Blue Jackets rookie center Oliver Bjorkstrand.

After Bjorkstrand was shuffled up and down the lines in his NHL debut Thursday, he settled into a spot at Nationwide Arena on Saturday and scored his first two goals in the third period to help the Blue Jackets defeat the New Jersey Devils 6-3.

"I think I really screwed him up last game because we had so many line combinations, so we focused on keeping the lines together," said Tortorella, who became the first U.S. born coach to reach the mark.

Linemates Matt Calvert and Alexander Wennberg each had two assists. Boone Jenner had a goal and an assist, and Cam Atkinson, Seth Jones and William Karlsson also scored for Columbus (29-34-8).

PHILADELPHIA -- The Pittsburgh Penguins did something Saturday they'd never done in their 49-year rivalry with the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Penguins limited the Flyers to 17 shots on goal, the fewest ever by Philadelphia against Pittsburgh, which used that defense for a 4-1 win at Wells Fargo Center.

"I thought it was the most complete game that we've played to this point at both ends of the rink," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. "I thought when the time came to have to defend, we defended hard. Our attention to detail was really good. I thought everybody trusted one another out there. And when we play that way, we're hard to play against."

Pittsburgh (39-24-8) won its fifth straight game. The win, combined with the New York Islanders' 3-0 loss to the Dallas Stars, allowed the Penguins to move past the Islanders and into third place in the Metropolitan Division.

3/20/16: Jakob Silfverberg buries his own rebound on the doorstep top-shelf, giving the Ducks a 3-2 win in overtime

WINNIPEG -- Jakob Silfverberg scored with 58.6 seconds left in overtime to help the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets at MTS Centre on Sunday.

Silfverberg shook loose from Winnipeg defenders and took a pass from Ryan Kesler before breaking in on Jets goaltender Michael Hutchinson and putting in his second chance under the crossbar for this 13th goal.

"They kind of forgot about me," said Silfverberg, who scored his first career overtime goal. "[Ryan Kesler] made a good pass, and I had a lot more time than I thought I would."

The win began a five-game Canadian road trip for the Ducks (40-22-9). They moved to within four points of the Los Angeles Kings for the Pacific Division lead. The trip continues against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.

"Getting this first win is great for the confidence for the rest of the trip," Silfverberg said. "You always say you want to start off a road trip with a win, and that's what we did. Maybe it wasn't the prettiest way, but we managed to find a way, and that's what is important."
