Nugent-Hopkins leads Oilers past Blues

Edmonton scores four power-play goals in win against St. Louis

EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Oilers ended an extended slump with the man-advantage, scoring four power-play goals in a 6-4 win against the St. Louis Blues at Rexall Place on Wednesday.

Edmonton (28-38-7) was 1-for-32 on the power play in its past 14 games but went 4-for-6 against St. Louis (41-22-9), which had the second-best penalty-killing unit in the NHL (85.7 percent).

The Oilers, who had lost eight straight against the Blues, had a fifth power-play goal waved off in the second period.

"We were getting drilled and quizzed about the power play and we get hot all of a sudden and it goes in the net," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. "I thought the power play, it had an all-time high as far as urgency went and it outworked the penalty k*ll. We weren't cute, we weren't fancy. We shot, we got the puck back, we scored on rebounds."

VANCOUVER -- Colorado Avalanche coach Patrick Roy met with Mikkel Boedker on Wednesday morning to try and spark some offensive confidence in his new forward.

It paid off quickly against the Vancouver Canucks.

Boedker scored twice and Colorado regained the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference with a 3-1 victory against the Canucks at Rogers Arena.

"Keep playing, just be a little more confident and keep going to the net and good things are going to happen," Boedker said when asked about Roy's message. "It worked out pretty well."

CALGARY -- Michael Frolik had a goal and two assists to help the Calgary Flames to a 4-1 win against the Winnipeg Jets at Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday.

Joe Colborne, Sean Monahan and Mark Giordano scored, and Joni Ortio made 28 saves for Calgary (30-35-5), which has won three of its past four games.

"We said in the room here that we want to finish strong," Frolik said. "Every game, we want to play hard, we want to be on the puck. Every shift, we want to play very hard. I think we were doing that the last couple of games and just want to carry on that in the rest of the season."

Drew Stafford scored for Winnipeg (29-36-5). Ondrej Pavelec made 17 saves.

"The few mistakes we made ended up in our net and it's a challenge mentally to stay with what you believe in and to stay with what you do," Jets forward Blake Wheeler said. "But we believe that doing that is going to pay off in the not-too-distant future, hopefully."

ANAHEIM -- Defenseman Kevin Klein had the first two-goal game of his NHL career and Antti Raanta made 22 saves to help the New York Rangers to a 2-1 win against the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center on Wednesday.

Klein tied the game 1-1 at 3:11 of the second period, then put the Rangers ahead with 6:41 left in the third when he went to the net and deflected Eric Staal's pass behind Ducks goaltender John Gibson for his eighth goal of the season. He has four points in his past five games.

"Two goals is nice, but the two points is the big thing," Klein said. "They've got three lines that can really bring it, and I thought we did a good job defending out there. We battened down the hatches there at the end, and Raanta did great too."

The Rangers (40-23-7) won the opener of their three-game California trip, which continues Thursday against the Los Angeles Kings. They regained second place in the Metropolitan Division, moving two points ahead of the New York Islanders, who have two games in hand.

TORONTO - Florida Panthers forward Jussi Jokinen, a native of Finland, had the luck of the Irish with him on St. Patrick's Day at Air Canada Centre.

Jokinen scored two fluky goals less than nine minutes apart in the second period to help the Panthers defeat the Maple Leafs 4-1 on Thursday.

"Not that I know of," he replied with a chuckle when asked if he had any Irish ancestry. "We don't have this holiday in Finland, but it's a nice holiday. Hopefully, I will have many more games on St. Patrick's Day if I have luck like that."

PITTSBURGH -- With the Pittsburgh Penguins in a hole, Sidney Crosby dug them out against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Doan powers Coyotes past Sharks

Doan's late go-ahead goal SJS@ARI: Doan notches 25th goal, gives Coyotes lead

3/17/16: Shane Doan gets control of the puck in the corner and flips it at the net, notching the go-ahead goal with 1:31 left in the 3rd

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Shane Doan scored the game-winning goal with 1:31 left in the Arizona Coyotes' 3-1 victory against the San Jose Sharks at Gila River Arena on Thursday.

Doan's shot from the corner deflected off goalie Martin Jones and trickled behind him. Eighteen of his 25 goals this season have come at home.

Antoine Vermette scored into an empty net with 54 seconds left to seal it for Arizona (31-32-7), which is 3-0-1 in its past four games.

Michael Stone had a goal and an assist, and Mike Smith made 27 saves for the Coyotes, who defeated the Sharks for the first time in three games this season.

Tomas Hertl scored for San Jose (39-25-6), which had two goals disallowed after video review and missed a chance to jump past the Anaheim Ducks into second place in the Pacific Division. Jones made 19 saves.

Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic left the game with 7:33 remaining after a collision with Doan. Forward Matt Nieto was injured in the second period.

San Jose appeared to take a 1-0 lead when Dainius Zubrus beat Smith from the slot at 12:23 of the first period following a Kevin Connauton turnover. But Arizona coach Dave Tippett challenged the call on the ice, and the goal was waved off after video review determined Zubrus was offsides.

The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead a minute later. Alex Tanguay settled a loose puck and set up Stone for a shot from the point that was deflected out high by Sharks forward Nieto and past Jones.

San Jose coach Peter DeBoer challenged the ruling on the ice, but Stone's fifth goal was upheld after video review determined Tanguay was onside.

Stone has four of his five goals and 23 of his 32 points on home ice.

The Sharks had 11 shots in the second period and appeared to tie it 1-1 at 6:29 of the second period when Chris Tierney chased a Paul Martin shot into the crease and had the puck deflect off his leg and past Smith. Video review determined that Tierney used a distinct kicking motion, and a second San Jose goal came off the scoreboard, leaving Arizona with its 1-0 lead.

The Sharks did draw even at 14:29 of the second. Joe Thornton set up Martin for a shot from the point. The shot never got to the net, but Hertl kicked the puck to his stick and beat Smith's outstretched pad for his 17th goal.

Smith, who made 44 saves in a 4-0 win against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday in his first game after missing 40 following abdominal surgery, had his shutout streak end at 106:03.

Reinhart's PPG opens the scoring BUF@OTT: Reinhart puts the Sabres ahead early

3/18/16: Sam Reinhart's initial rebound try is saved, but he flips another attempt off the glove of Craig Anderson and in for a power-play goal

BUFFALO -- Sam Reinhart showed there is another Buffalo Sabres rookie worth watching this season.

Reinhart scored his 20th goal and had an assist to help the Buffalo Sabres defeat the Ottawa Senators 3-1 at First Niagara Center on Friday.

Reinhart gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead 2:07 into the first period with a power-play goal. After Senators defenseman Dion Phaneuf was called for slashing, Reinhart put a rebound of a Zemgus Girgensons shot past Senators goalie Craig Anderson.

"I think we came out and really wanted to turn around our starts," Reinhart said. "As of lately, they haven't been the best and we've been better as the game's gone on. To get that first one early and that next one right after, that got us going on the right page and we followed that up. It was a good effort tonight."

Winnik finishes Kuznetsov's feed NSH@WSH: Winnik scores off dish from Kuznetsov

3/18/16: Braden Holtby makes a long pass to Evgeny Kuznetsov, who sets up Daniel Winnik for the game-tying goal midway through the 2nd period

WASHINGTON -- When Evgeny Kuznetsov goes behind the net, his linemates know they have to be ready.

"I don't think you get used to it," said T.J. Oshie, who converted a passout from Kuznetsov into what proved to be the game-winning goal in the Washington Capitals' 4-1 victory against the Nashville Predators at Verizon Center on Friday. "You try to get ready for it. But even when it does come, you kind of think to yourself, 'How'd he just do that?' I'll take them every time."

Kuznetsov finished with three assists and has 53 for the season, tied for second in the NHL. He leads the Capitals and is tied for third in the NHL with 73 points, and his creativity with the puck seems to be endless.

"He sees things that maybe only a handful of players in the League can see," Oshie said. "It's fun. It's nice getting those empty-netters."
