To get you to open/read nearly every file and be protected yourself:

 

1. Windows 7

2. Microsoft Office 2007 or Open Office (if you want freeware)

3. Anti-virus (Kaspersky or Nod or Bit Defender for paid, Avast or AVG for freeware)

4. Anti Malware software like: Spybot Search and Destroy, IOBit 360 and/or Malwarebytes Anti-malware (actually the more the merrier since it makes sure everything is detected)

5. Advance System Care (malware remover, registry defragger, etc)

6. Adobe Acrobat Reader or CutePDF

7. VLC media player or GOMPlayer

8. Mozilla Firefox

9. 7-Zip (For Zip, RAR, and other compression files) or IZarc

10. Adobe Photoshop or Paint.NET (for freeware photo editing) or GIMP (another freeware photo editor) or GIMPShop (GIMP made to look like Photoshop)

On my computer, I got:

1. OS - Windows XP

2. Microsoft Office 2003

3. Mozilla Firefox

4. Avast Antivirus - free Home edition

5. Limewire - recently acquired

6. Ashampoo - for my backups and on-the-go music needs.

7. Adobe PDF Reader - Just enough to read those journals and documents

8. Hijackthis - for virus problems I post in a forum and let others diagnose what virus is acting up in my system.

9. CCleaner - maintenance

10. WinRAR - for sending folders

1) TrueCrypt (you guys need to use this. open source yet very reliable to protect ur data against prying eyes)

2) Speedfan (to monitor temps)

3) CPUZ (to monitor cpu speed)

4) GPUZ (to monitor vid card)

5) Camtasia (to capture vids and for presentations)

6) WBFS Manager (for Wii games)

7) PSP ISO Compresser (for PSP)

8) Daemon Tools Lite (for mounting ISO)

9) Xvid 5.0 (to convert video files to different format and resolutions i.e psp, ipod touch, etc)

10) Firefox

 

I have win 7 ultimate 64bit and everything works like a charm!
