2009 NCAA MVP John Marion Wilson played for JRU..it was Jimbo Aquino who played for San Sebastian

both Wilson and Aquino became NCAA MVP's in two consecutive seasons... both players play the same positions. it's just that Wilson is a better individual player while Aquino is a better team player.

Derby eyes Mamaril to shore up frontline

B-MEG Derby Ace is raring to defend its PBA Philippine Cup crown, but must do so with two of its most prized players most likely sitting it out for majority of the conference.

So the Llamados are moving heaven and earth to shore up their frontline and are eyeing Billy Mamaril from Ginebra for the veteran frontline presence they so badly need.

"The problem is, sister team ang dalawa and Derby Ace cannot give Ginebra anything but a future draft pick," said a source privy to the negotiations. "Also, there’s the problem of which is going to be the third party."

Derby Ace coach Jorge Gallent declined to comment about the possible trade, but admitted they indeed need some frontliners to make up for what is projected to be a prolonged absence by Kerby Raymundo and Marc Pingris.

Raymundo, who hardly saw action in the recently-concluded Fiesta Conference, was found to be suffering from a torn muscle in his hip area, the same injury bugging Pingris. Both are set to undergo arthroscopic surgery and may take five months to fully recuperate.

The Philippine Cup, topped last season by the team then known as Purefoods, starts on Oct. 3.

The Llamados tried to shore up their frontline by acquiring 6-foot-3 Pari Llagas, a known inside banger, and 6-4 Val Acuna, also a former UE Red Warrior, in last Sunday’s draft. But even team officials admitted the two may take some time before fully blooming in the pro league.

"What Derby Ace truly needs is the veteran smarts Mamaril can instantly deliver," said the source.

Already, the Llamados are sending Paul Artadi to San Miguel Beer for Jonas Villanueva in a trade that also involves Air21 and future draft picks.

For their part, the Kings picked a pair of former NCAA MVPs in John Marion Wilson and Jimbo Aquino, both shooting guards who could help the perennial crowd favorites’ aging backcourt.

The Final Score: The pulsating and puzzling PBA draft

By MICO HALILI

The rookie draft is supposed to answer questions, not create more of it when the day’s done. We ask about prospects weeks before draft and expect resolutions by the time the twenty-first over-all pick slips into a PBA team jacket. The 2010 PBA Draft, however, played out like an episode of Lost. We set out looking for answers, only to plunge into some bizarre parallel universe built by the Dharma Initiative.

By making Nonoy Baclao the first over-all pick, Air 21 raised eyebrows the way Venus Raj did when she blurted out “Major Major". They did what? She said what? And inquiring minds started to purr like engines. Rabeh Al-Hussaini’s perplexed brain was roaring like a Shelby Mustang. We were 99% sure Al-Hussaini, the most dominant big man in the draft, would go number one. Air 21, however, is never afraid to turn that one percent into one big move.

Baclao was stunned but thankful. Al-Hussaini was stunned but baffled. If this is a television series, we’re only in episode one. Yet Air 21 already hurled its best curveball during the first at-bat of a 9-inning game.

Now what?

If there’s anything the 2009 Japeth Aguilar saga taught us, it’s that we wait. Figuring out Aguilar’s next move before, during and after last year’s PBA Draft was like predicting the final verdict of a pendulum. What we find out today may not matter much tomorrow. Besides, it’ll be more fun to watch events unfold in a September more topsy-turvy than Ronald Tubid on ten cups of coffee.

Wanting to know if Baclao and Al-Hussaini will start the season in Air 21 uniforms isn’t so much a product of naughty thinking as it is a result of a franchise’s reputation. Air 21 isn’t averse to wheeling and dealing. They’re not afraid to surprise. Call them business-savvy. Or call them bold. While others look down on Air 21’s penchant for sending away prized recruits (remember Japeth, Jay-Wash and Mac-Mac?), there are those who see merit in Air 21’s PBA business model.

The goal of every team is to win. The concept of winning, however, is relative. When PBA teams enter into agreement, as most business deals go, trust that it’s always a win-win proposition. It may look lopsided on the surface. But teams have wants. Teams have needs. Some teams want to win regardless of monetary demands. Some teams need to compete without breaking one piggy bank too many. Some teams want to do good business and the PBA is a business. And some teams just need to financially survive.

Air 21 may or may not have started a chain reaction which will send any or all of their high-profile picks somewhere else. Fans are just as intrigued with the chances of John Wilson and Jimbo Aquino with Ginebra. Teams will manage their picks based on priorities. Hence, Sunday’s proceedings only mark the beginning of busy times ahead.

And now all we can do is wonder. All we can do is wait.

Now that Larry Fonacier is with TnT, baka sumunod si Rico Villanueva sa TnT. Of course, I'm just speculating but since the big boss and the coach are Atenistas, it's not far-fetched.

And actually they are already anticipating that they will be able to draft the supposed HIGHLY IMPROVED Greg Slaughter since Atenean na rin ito ... of course I am also speculating considering si Rico maaring sumunod sa TnT just because he's an Atenean. How much more the possible next big man ng Philippine basketball that is also an Atenean.

Sandali, kung kukuha ng Big Man na may connection sa Ateneo ang TnT this off season, bakit si Rico at hindi si Rabbeh? Ang pagkakaalam ko ur hoping na mapadpad si rabbeh sa Ginebra kung Air 21 will trade him. If that is the case, meaning Air 21 is open to trade Rabbeh why would TnT not go after him and go after Rico instead??? Mas magaling ba si Rico? Parag may pagka IRRATIONAL kahit speculation lang.

Haha! You can't nail me on the NBA thread so now you're trying to get your first win over me on this thread. There are no irrational speculations. Kaya nga speculation. What is irrational is Air21 choosing Baclao over Al-Hussaini as the first pick. I guess you still can't get over the word irrational. You still have a hangover from the lecturing you got from me on the NBA thread.

That move was UNEXPECTED (not irrational) since management have their reasons for doing such. :P

Look at your post ... Sinabi mo rin na it was management decision to do such. Then you're saying it was irrational? Confused???

So kung sabi mo sinadya nila at nagkaroon ng decision process paano sila naging irrational? Pag sinabi kasing management decided, ibig sabihin pinagisipan nila un kaya may rationalization process na nangyari. ;)

The move maybe not the best move/decision for an observer like you and me but for management they have their reasons. As such, this move was unexpected by observers who really don't know what transpired. :P

I think its clear, only irrationals could not understand this. Well know if you're one in your next post. B)

WHAT???
