GINEBRA CLOBBERS RED BULL

Barakos hobbled by injured Parada; off-form Baguio

Sunday, 20 July 2008

Red Bull coach Yeng Guiao swore he didn’t know how they were able to finish No. 2 in the double-round elimination phase.

At the start of the Final Four Sunday, Guiao and his boys didn’t know what hit them.

Barangay Ginebra rode the momentum of its swashbuckling run dating back to the elims as it walloped Red Bull, 108-82, in Game One of their 2008 Smart PBA Fiesta Conference best-of-seven semifinals showdown at the Cuneta Astrodome.

"It’s just Game One and it doesn’t mean anything. It’s a long series and we know what Red Bull is capable of doing," said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico, trying to downplay their victory.

But the Kings reigned practically on all fronts, quickly establishing control and immediately taking away the sizzle in the highly awaited match-up.

It didn’t help that the Barakos came out flat and struggled all evening, hardly looking like the team that compiled an 11-7 win-loss records in the elims for an outright entry into the semis.

The Barakos committed 27 errors and yielded 25 turnover points to the Kings. Ginebra, on the other hand, gave away only two turnover points.

The Kings, fresh from a three-day rest after easing out the Sta. Lucia Realtors Wednesday, got off to a jackrabbit start and never let up in fashioning out the wire-to-wire win.

Chris Alexander asserted himself from the opening tip, helping Ginebra set the tone early.

With Alexander outplaying Adam Parada, the Ginebra locals took the cue, outperforming their Red Bull counterparts as the Kings stretched their amazing streak to nine games.

The Kings ended up with a well-balanced job with six of them finishing in double figures. Only Leo Najorda and Jojo Duncil put in twin-digit output for the Barakos.

"We came out today with a defensive mentality, except in some parts where the game became a shootout, we thinking we can outscore Red Bull," said Uichico.

Ginebra pounced on Red Bull’s erratic first half, sitting on a 50-37 cushion at the turn.

A 16-2 advantage on turnover points was a big factor as the Kings dominated the opening half, enjoying the lead from the get-go.

Alexander threw his weight around early, piling up 10 rebounds and the same number of rebounds as against Parada’s five rebounds and two points in the first 24 minutes of play. (NC)

The scores:

Ginebra 108 – Alexander 16, Helterbrand 16, Caguioa 15, Valenzuela 13, Artadi 12, Menk 10, Pacana 9, Salvacion 5, Crisano 4, Escalona 3, Reavis 3, Mamaril 2, Pablo 0.

Red Bull 82 – Najorda 19, Duncil 16, Pennisi 8, Baguio 7, Juntilla 6, Parada 6, Cruz 6, Hrabak 6, Alvarez 3, Robinson 2, Adriano 2, Bugia 1, Ybanez 0.

Quarterscores: 26-10, 50-37, 79-57, 108-82
